So my friend and I are in an argument. I say that those who are OPENLY gay never commit gay crimes because there are too many hate crimes committed against gay people. He says that gay people can and do commit hate crimes, just not against other gays. Who's right?

Keep in mind, my point is that:
a) this applies to those who are OPENLY gay. Not closet gays.
b) not "Gays CAN commit hate crimes." That's a given. Anyone can. I'm saying that
they DON'T.
c) this is about hate crimes, NOT prejudice and discrimination. Again, anyone can
discriminate, but there's a huge difference between hate crimes and prejudice.

Huh. I didn't really think about that. That's interesting. Did that friend have an abusive family?

You know, after thinking about it for awhile, I'm not so sure that that actually qualifies as a "hate crime." I mean, what your friend did was wrong, but he WAS provoked. Hate crimes are more along the lines of YOU'RE GAY/BLACK/WHATEVER SO I'M GONNA KILL YOU REGARDLESS OF ANY OTHER CHARACTERISTICS!

There are gay people who attack straight people. Gang up on them.

I would classify that as a hate crime.

Of course they do.

Just because someone is gay, doesn't make them not racist, or something.

Also, some non-camp gay guys could actually hate camp guys that much, there are an awful lot of gay people, some of them are bound to be weird.

I agree with your friend becaue I had this friend that commited a hate crime he hates straight people and one day he flipped because this homophobe called him a f** and he pushed him in front of a bus he's in jail and im not saying that he was right for what he did but there was another way the straight guy could have went about it.

*technically* that's not usually classified as a hate crime. it usually has to be against a minority group.

and yes... he's an example of one that (almost) happened...
i have this one friend who was in the KKK until they kicked him out for being gay (probably would've killed him but he ran to us and like good co-dependants we hid his a** (no, really... we didn't want a dead friend however annoying he can be sometimes). he's hard to hang around sometimes because he's so racist. one time about a year ago we were all at a small party and he had a few drinks in him and then my friend (he's black, deaf, and gay) looked at me, smiled shyly, and signed, "wow, [he's] smashed." appparently, joe, the racist one, thought he spontaniously knew ASL. he smashed a beer bottle and proceeded to attempt to hit him with the broken end. when we finially restrained him I asked him what prompted that in his mind. he said (in less nice words) that he didn't think blacks and whites should sleep together and furthermore i should be ashamed for disgracing my race. (i was thinking, "which one, nitwit?")

so anyways, apparently when he gets drunk not only is he superracist but he thinks he knows sign language. obviously he doesn't if he got "you're hot, let's f--k" out of "wow, [joe's] drunk". the next words he started to say were "should i drive..." so basically he tried to hurt/kill boy that was worried that he might not be able to drive home safely.

so yes, gays (open or closeted) can be racist. they can be sexist. they can be ageist. they can even be homophobic (yes, goodness knows what a lack of self accepatance).

I could see less homosexuals going out of their way to commit hate crimes because they know (or more than likely know) what it is like to be discriminated against.

But no, hate is found anywhere- I promise.
