Avariel and Myotar Aka. “Wingéd Elves” In the 2nd Edition D&D book The Complete Book of Elves, we were presented a modified formal version of a race that appeared in Dragon Magazine #51, called “The Winged Folk.” This Race was known as the Avariel, A race of high elves who had beatutiful pale skin, and feathered wings. There were a number of ‘theories’ presented in the text about the origins of the avariel, the most widely accepted one ‘among scholars’ being that they were descended from elves who had Wings of Flying permantently attatched the thier backs. It has been one of my greatest dissapointments that this race has not yet made its way into any of the 3.5E manuals, and I havent heard of them in the 3.0 Ones either. Because it is a race that has figured greatly in my campaigns that I have run, and because they were also one of my favorites to play, I adapted the class to 3.0 / 3.5 rules. Because they vary little from the High Elven subrace, it was not very difficult, either. Also presented here are the Myotar. . . . Dark Elves who have had Cloaks of the Bat permanently attatched, just as the Avariel had Wings of Flying. While this race is one of my own making, it is true to the Avariel concept, and required little adaptation.

Racial Name: Avariel Ability Adjustments: +4 Dex, -4 Con, +2 Cha Size: Medium Movement: Move 30, Fly 60 (Good), Jump (10) Special Qualities/Abilities: *Elven Sight: Low-light Vision *Elven Senses: +2 Racial Bonus to Listen, Search, and Spot *Improved Elven Senses: +4 racial bonus to Search and Spot while flying or outdoors *Avariel Weapons: Proficiency with Shortsword, Lasso, and Bola *Fragile: An Avariel cannot fly if it has lost 50% or more of its hit points, and can only glide for a short time if it has lost 25% or more of its hit points. *Vulnerable to Fire: Avariel wings burn easilly and quickly. If exposed to flames, they quickly ignite, and if they are not extinguished before a full round passes, they become useless, and only several weeks of recuperation will restore the Avariel's ability to fly. *Claustrophobic: Avariel cannot stand to be in enclosed spaces for very long. When in such places, the avariel must make a Will save for every day she is confined. (DC 15 + number of days) If failed, she goes temporarily insane, becoming violent and hysterical until she can reach open air. Checks are continually made even if insanity has already set in; more than four failures at one time means the Avariel has gone completely insane. *Automatic Languages: Avariels speak Common, Elven, and Auran *Favored Class: Fighter or Sorceror (see below) *Level Adjustment: +1
*Description: Avariel look very similar to High Elves, with the addition of a pair of large, feathery white wings. Their clothing is similar to that of togas, as regular clothing can snag thier wings, and togas can be easilly wrapped about the body. There have ben rumors of Avariel with wings ranging from black to grey as well, but such rumors have been unconfirmed.
*Society: Avariels are a rather reclusive people, though in recent years they have slowly been seen more and more. They tend to avoid the surface races if possible. Thier society is split into two main faction: Those who emphasize physical prowess, and those who value intellectual ability and the arts. These to factions have perfectly harmonious relations, they merely approach life from different angles. There ae other factions as well, but most avariel seem to fall into one of these two groups. Avariel get along fairly well with other air-borne races, including Avariel and Myotar hybrids who have freed themselves from the control of the drow.

Racial Name:Myotar Ability Adjustments: +4 Dex, -4 Con, +2 Cha Size: Medium Movement: Move 30, Fly 60 (Good), Jump (10) Special Qualities/Abilities: *Dark Elven Sight: Darkvision 120ft. *Elven Senses: +2 Racial Bonus to Listen, Search, and Spot *Improved Elven Senses: +4 racial bonus to Search and Spot while flying or outdoors *Myotar Weapons: Proficiency with Scimitar, Whip, and Bladering *Fragile: A Myotar cannot fly if it has lost 50% or more of its hit points, and can only glide for a short time if it has lost 25% or more of its hit points. *Vulnerable to Arrows: Myotar wings are easilly pierced with arrows. If in flight and struck with an arrow, there is a 50% that the wing is punctured. For every puncture in the wing, the manuverability class is reduced by one. If reduced below poor, thw wings become useless, and only several weeks of recuperation will restore the Myotar's ability to fly. *Claustrophobic: Myotar do not like to be in enclosed spaces. When in such places, the Myotar must make a Will save for every day she is confined. (DC 15 + number of days) If failed, she goes temporarily insane, becoming violent and hysterical until she can reach open air. Checks are continually made even if insanity has already set in; more than four failures at one time means the Myotar has gone completely insane. *Light Sensitive: Myotar are creatures of the night. They suffer the same penalties as Drow when exposed to bright light. *Spell Like Abilities: Myotar share the same spell like abilities as the Drow do. *Automatic Languages: Myotar speak Common, Elven, and Undercommon *Favored Class: Wizard (Males) or Cleric (Females) *Level Adjustment: +3
*Description: Myotar look very similar to Dark Elves, with the addition of a pair of large, leathery black wings. Their clothing is similar to that of togas, as regular clothing can snag thier wings, and togas can be easilly wrapped about the body. There have been rumors of Myotar with wings ranging in color from brown to red, but such rumors are unconfirmed.
*Society: Myotar society is much the same as that of the drow, though in addition to the worship of Lolth, they revere are deity represented by a great red bat. The Myotar are allied to the drow nations of the Underdark, and hate avariel as much as the Drow hate High Elves. The Myotar have been enslaved by the drow, however, and resent thier intrusion in thier affairs. Many of the Myotar have come to have the Dark Elven way of life, and have ventured out into the world to make thier own way. Often feared and mistrusted, the only ones who are wiling to accept these people-less Myotar are, surprisingly, thier enemies, the Avariel.

Elven Hybrids
Also Presented in the 2nd Edition Complete Book of Elves was the idea of variant Half-Elves. It was said that while MOST Half-Elves were descended from Human and Elven stock, it was not always the case. It was stated specifically that Half-Elves were predominantly of half-human stock, but that there were exceptions. Unfortunately, Little else was said on this matter, just a general idea of the possibilities therein; no official designs were put forth, it was left to DMs and Players to come up with thier own variants, and the book was about true elves, not half-elves. In other books and magazines, Half-Elven subraces involving the breeding of Humans and Drow, or Humans and Sea Elves, etc, also began cropping up.
Extrapolating these variant races one can come to the following conclusions: 1. Elves can have offspring with other humanoid races, not just humans 2. All Elven subraces share the quality of breedability with other races. 3. This makes Elves very similar to dragons in that dragons can breed with pretty much any humanoid. 4. Dragons can also interbreed with other dragon sub-races ((Council of Wyrms campaign setting, 2.0 Revised Edition)). Due to the same predilection for ability to cross-breed, Elves ought to be able to do the same.
Hypothesis: Elven races should be able to interbreed with each other, providing even more racial types. It would be ludicrous to assume Drow and High Elves could interbreed with Humans, Gnomes, Halflings, and even Dwarves, but not with each other. Especially since all Elves are descended from the same original stock (see below)

As you can see, there are a LOT of elven sub-types. Far more than the books usually list. Even the Elven book didnt have them all. . . . Such as the Spelljammer race Star Elves (not suited for PC's.) Even the Avariel, which appeared in the same book, arent on the tree.
Elven Hybrids can be constructed by using the following guidlines: *Avariel and Myotar hybrids always have +4 Dex and -4 Con, and the Fragile quality. (Speed and Hollow bones for flight.) *Drow Hybrids gain one spell like ability from the Drow lists. (Representing half of a drow’s spell potential.) *Darkvision supercedes Low-Light Vision. If only one of the parents has darkvision, it is to 60ft range. If both have darkvision, it is to the max range of the parents (whichever’s is higher) *Racial weapons are based on the society they are raised in. *Favored classes are based on the society they are raised in. *Spell resistances are lost, unless both parents have it. *All drow have a sensitivity to sudden flashes of light, but do not take the penalty for functionig in normal sunlight. Their eyes simply adjust more slowly. *All Hybrids count as full Elves, and thus get all standard elven bonus. (Racial skill bonuses on listen, search and spot, automatic search, bonus against enchantments, immunity to sleep effects.) *Level Adjustment is equal to the sum of the halves of each parent’s level adjustments. Thus, a Drow/Aquatic Elf hybrid has a +1 Level Adjustment (0/2 + 2/2 = 1). *Environmental benefits cross over in partial amounts, as determined by the DM. Thus, Avariel hybrids gain wings, but have a Fly 60 (Average), and Aquatic Elf hybrids gain waterbreathing, and only gain part of the bonus to Swim checks, etc.
Note that because Elves may interbreed, Hybrids may be created with balances different than 50/50. An elf could be created. In such cases, use the appropriate proportions to determine numeric benefits. (Ex. 1/4 Aquatic, 3/4 Drow gets 2 of the 3 spell abilities, 3/4 spell resistance, ability to hold breath, but not water breathing, etc.)

Sample Elven Hybrid:
High Elven / Dark Elven hybrid Ability Adjustments: +2 Dex, -2 Con, -2 Cha Favored Class: Wizard Abilities/Qualities: *Medium Size *30’ Movement *Immunity to sleep effects *+2 bonus on Will saves versus spells *60’ Darkvision *Weapon Proficiencies: Longsword, Scimitar, Shortbow, Longbow *Automatic Search Checks *Innate Spells: When the character is created, they may pick one of the Dark Elven innate spells to be able to cast 1/day at their character level. *Light Sensitive: Blinded for one round by exposure to sudden bright lights, but does not suffer any penalty for fighting in daylight. Level Adjustment +1
*Note: Raised in either a mixed-racial setting (I.E. a Major City) or by very tolerant elves, more than likely High Elves, because they are the most tolerant of the elven species, and would possibly be willing to give a drow a chance to abandon his/her evil ways. Dark Elves would never tolerate something that would be such an abomination in thier eyes. Grey Elves would also not tolerate such a creature, because they are racial purists. Other Elven sub-races might also tolerate them, though treat them with fear and suspicion.

If people want statistics and descriptions of other Elven races, I can probably get them for them. Either post here (for those of you who read this, or if someone mentions it, redirect them to me.)
I have pretty much ALL the 2.0 handbooks (with like 3 exceptions, i thikn), and most of the 3.5 ones, so Ive got alot of stuff to base things off of. As I mentioned to GeoHound, Elves are one of my primary races that I've done custom variants on.
So, if someone wants to try and make a new variant, I'm up to the task. I love that sort of stuff.
Lesse. . . variants I know of: Wild, Wood, High, Moon, Sun, Star, Aquatic, Deep, Dark, Rock, Fire
Ones I have a template I can use for: Jungle, Water, Ice, Earth, Desert

Apparently the Avariel DID make a showing in the 3.5e book Races of Faerun. Unfortunately, for all the fact that they are elves with a slightly better stat gain and have wings, their level adjustment is a +3, which to me is just more than slightly rediculous.
I'll stick with the stats that Ive posted here if you want to use them in one of my games, because I think a +3 adjustment for wings and difference racial weapons and favored class is just stupid. Especially since the DMG suggests simple changes like differences in racial weapons and favored classes as alternative variants that cam make a character's race more interesting.
I mean, cmon. . . a +3 for just wings...? I can get those on other races with much lower adjusts. . . scream scream (Not to mention by just taking an elf and adding the winged template gives them even better ability adjustments AND wings, for only a +2)

Ayame Kokoro Lol, maybe having them posted like this will help players break away from just playing the core races I'd be happy to break away from the core races, but most of the ones I'd like to use have level adjustments, so I wouldn't play them in 1st level missions.

Races of Faerun does indeed have Avariels in it.
Also, if you read into the Wings of Flying description, it says that the cloak produces feathery wings, such as a bird, or leathery wings, such as a bat, and the type of wings and color of such are determined by the creator at the time of creation.
