How did you learn about the word otaku, and when did you realize you were one?
PostPosted: Fri Jun 02, 2006 5:27 pm

I obviously learned of the word "Otaku" from watching one of the many anime I have. When I realized what it was I immediately looked at myself and had an epihany. "OMG! I'm an otaku!" But I'm proud and I say it loud that I'm one, and don't frown when people look strangely at me, in fact, I smile! When someone calls me a nerd, I say thank you! I love being an otaku!

actuallly the term otaku means house(ment to be an insult), that means actually means that some one with an obsession so bad that they never move out of their family's house(live with their mother)

*ehem* I believe wikipedia explains the word "otaku" best as saying the following:

"In English, otaku refers to a variety of geek or fanboy/fangirl obsessed with anime and manga.

While in Japanese the term otaku has negative connotations, in English the term is more flexible; some fans believe it has positive connotations, while other fans believe it has negative connotations.

Currently the term otaku is often used as self-description by anime fans with a minute and detailed knowledge. They use it to rally those who have recently begun to watch anime or read manga, and encourage questions on shows and Japanese culture in general.
"

The word otaku has grown to become specifically related to anime & manga fans in the western world. Though some still believe the word should be used as an insult rather than a compliment (as the exact japanese definition and usage suggests), it is now so widely used to define anime and manga fans that it is futile to use the japanese definition any longer in the western world. 3nodding

As for when I learned the word otaku, it was probably at Anime Expo '04, though I really have no idea. I know that I learned what Yaoi was at AX '04... sweatdrop

yes, otakus are frowned upon in Japan, however, in the US it has taken on its own meaning, and is about on the same level as a nerd....

I found out what an otaku was when I heard my friends talking about it and I realized I was one after my first anime convention, when I gave away all my regular books and replaced them with mangas and after watching every single anime on On Demand for a month. I've now watched almost all the anime on On Demand for over three years, been to 3 anime convnetions (I'm only allowed to go to one convention a year, Anime Boston), and I own over 100 mangas. I don't feel like counting them right now -_- too tired. HORRAY FOR ALL OTAKU!

Well, either way, negative or positive, I don't give a damn what people think about me and am proud to say I'm an Otaku!

I was actually debating whether or not to get a tattoo with the characters for Otaku...that might be overdoing it, but I think it'd be kind of cool.

I was called an Otaku far before I was addicted to anime. the so called otakus *(not really ones they are just some starters thinking they are) at my school called me one and after that I considered myself one even if I didn't know what it was. I know that was completly wrong but my friends told me what the term "Otaku" was and I was sure that I was and AM an OTAKU! AND PROUD OF IT! 4laugh
( I know idiotic story but its true please don't hate me for not knowing before what and otaku was and considering myself one gonk )

also I know my spelling is worst than a no handed monkey but sorry >< I am a disgrace too all things japanese like the rule XD

There are three Levels to being an Otaku...

Quoted from my Otaku Experience

Quote:

Level #1

This level is the least obsessive. Otaku level one folks like to watch Japanese Anime if there isn't really anything else on, or they may watch it in the company of friends having similar interests. For them any anime DVD's they have are rentals from the local video store. They may own a few anime DVD's but may watch them only once before selling them on eBay. This also is the level for people who are starting out in the anime genre and don't entirely know where they stand as far as interests. A level 1 may occasionally watch the original Japanese version of an anime but many may prefer the English dub because that's what their more familiar with. The people don't define themselves as being Otaku because they aren't as familiar with things the other levels are.

Quote:

Level #2:
Level 2's make up a majority of anime fandom in America. Many like to attend conventions in their local area. Only a fraction of these people cosplay (more commonly with friends then by themselves). Commonly the anime/manga they collect are popular titles sold in American stores. The internet-savvy may spend of their free moments signing on to a couple of anime forums. More hardcore level 2s may dabble in anime music video's and fan-fics. Some level 2's may even download bit torrents of fansubs to preview at anime parties and clubs as a way of viewing what is yet to be licensed outside the main stream. When it comes to anime some level 2's like to watch the English dub of an anime so they can compare and contrast it with the original version. Other level 2 may stick with the version that sound the most decent to them. While a level 2 is a bit more obsessive than a level 1, they are still able to keep boundaries between their life and their hobbies.

Quote:

Level#3

The most obsessive level is the level 3 otaku. These people practically eat, breath, and sleep anime. If anime fandom became a religion some of the hardcore level 3's would be the first to sign up. Many of these people are known to go to several conventions a year many in different parts of the country as opposed to the one or two local conventions that level 2's may go to. These people are known to have all sorts of anime paraphernalia not just anime DVD's and Manga. Level 3's widely prefer the Japanese version over the English dub wanting to remain true to the series as possible. These people are known to dabble in not only downloading fansubs but also creating them.
