i need a program that, on startup, allows you to choose between installed OS partitions from which to boot. ^^

While I enjoy using LILO (for it is a mature bootloader with AFAIK few problems), I enjoy using GRUB more than LILO - if only because one does not have to rerun LILO evertime a new kernel is installed. http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/

Both lilo and grup work well. There is also a commercial solution available that can do additional things - google for Boot Magic if you wish.
I'd just use grub, personally, but my roommate used to use Boot Magic a while ago - it works for multiple copies of the same OS, too - he had 2 copies of XP, 3 copies of win2k, a copy of 98, ME, and 2 versions of linux going through it.

I'm very happy with Grub. I like how it can be all graphical and pretty. It's always worked well for me and has never let me down. LILO, on the other hand, has let me down a few times. There's the problem where it says LI and forgets about the LO and just hangs there. So I suggest Grub.

When you install an linux distribution it usually installs a boot loader as well, such as GRUB or LILO, which do what you described. I know SuSE installs GRUB, and its nice because the boot loader there is animated biggrin .

I guess I might be a bit late on this one, but Grub is my bootloader of choice, however, Gag looks pretty cool, but I could never get it to boot Fedora Core 5 Just Windows, which leaves me wondering what's the sense? Regardless, somebody may like it... http://gag.sourceforge.net/

Jironimo Kasumi While I enjoy using LILO (for it is a mature bootloader with AFAIK few problems), I enjoy using GRUB more than LILO - if only because one does not have to rerun LILO evertime a new kernel is installed. http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/ Not to rattle your cage or anything, but there's `make bzlilo` with 2.4.x kernels and `make install` with both 2.4.x and 2.6.x kernels. Neither of these involve any kind of extra step.
