1- Gaia ToS, Folks.

2- No bashing of an OS without fact-based arguments, or please state that your opinion is only an opinion. also, don't just say things like "Mac OS IS TEH SUXORZ. please back up your statement with fact.

3- respect others opinions.

4- no versus threads. (i.e Mac vs Windows) as they tend to lead to flamewars. i'll allow some if they are debates based on fact.

5-help others if they have problems. don't offer them to switch OSs.

6-Macintosh OS X is based on the Mach kernel, meaning any topics based on OS X belong in the main forum. Mac os 1-9 and LisaOS topics belong here.

BeOS is a clone of unix, though it's kernel is coded from scratch. Thus, being a unix, on the main forum.

Further OSes that are unixes, would include:

QNX, Solaris, HP-UX, Digitul Unix, Irix, and the other ton I'm forgetting...

Yea, you're confusing things smile

Solaris is a flavor of Unix formerly known as SunOS, developed by Sun Microsystems. They *also* make Java...

-rereads the article on Solaris that he read. it says that "While solaris is Unix-based, many of it's programs were written in Java."

O.o whoops XD

Yes, that's a bit more accurate, but even then not really...

Java code is maybe 25% of the code base of the software than runs on solaris, and that perhaps is a stretch. Most of the GNU tools (or Solaris clones) were written in C... They do have a new interface which is supposed to be quite nice (I forget the name) written in pure Java, but that's for a desktop Solaris system... All in all the use of java on a standard out-of-the-box Solaris install is minimal - though a lot of Sun's server programs are written in it, as well as 3rd party software...

To be honest I haven't found Java that good for writing OS components nor low level server daemons... It's great to run on top of things, to a point, but I'd never, for instance, rewrite Apache in java, or even my MTA...
