That would make sense, but I also doubt that even an eleven- or twelve- year old Lyra would come up with a name like Pantalaimon, and I also doubt it'd change, yannow? Lyra isn't described as being very well read or anything, and how else is she going to find a Greek name, if she lives in England? It's a mystery.
It would make sense for them to be formed of Dust, though.

Maybe she just put syllables together until it made a name they liked. *shrugs* And I always thought Pantalaimon was from Pandemonium, the palace of Satan, in Paradise Lost. There's a link somewhere.... found it.

Why are they called d歯ns? Aren't they dæmons? Anyway...I always wondered how they were named but never came up with a suitable answer. I just kinda thought that they came already named. Like they get formed once you are born and they know their name. But I wonder what mine would be named...?

It was my assumption that they come prenamed as well. And that their name usually has something to do with their settled form. Since this world is so heavily comtroled by fate and destiny, that would make sense.

Personally, I thought that they formed at birth, but a bit older than the baby (which would be 0 days old xd )...I kinda took it for granted...as if they were aged 4 at the baby's birth, and knew their name jut like a 4 year old kid knows it's name and home address or something like that.
I kinda imagined Lyra born and Pan crawls next to her in the shape of a mouse, just like he goes to the alethiometre. Pan always seems a bit more mature than her (to me at least)...
...It might raise the question of "how come he doesn't remember Lyra's true parents then?" and my answer would be "Hell! I dunno! Maybe he wasn't 4, maybe he was 3! Do YOU remember being 3?" "Yes" "...fine!...I bet your daemon is an elephant!" (couse they say elephants remember well 3nodding ).

I just read in an interview with Philip Pullman that he thinks your parents' deamons name your deamon.

Emerald_Jasmine I just read in an interview with Philip Pullman that he thinks your parents' deamons name your deamon. Oh, well that solves the mystery...kinda anticlimatic... I still can imagine Pan crawling up to baby Lyra like he crawls up to the alethiometer. rofl
