Love. A word in which seemed to effect one too many in this pitiful society full of hopes and dreams. A society in which this act of superficial love could be seen every which way; the population beginning to suffocate innocent bystanders who had survived this attack. Love is something in which I have never felt, nor questioned or stated my being in it. At this point, I have confirmed that love would never come for me. Only the ones whos destiny is such could ever feel this bittersweet emotion. I was not one of them.

Sunlight glared at my hour glass frame, consumed in what some would consider "odd" clothing for any summertime in California. I cuffed my hands upon the chair's handlebars and slowly shifted my weight upon my exposed legs. My red and black striped dress went up a bit, so I quickly tucked it down. Normally, a young girl like me would by dreading my long sleeves, but my environment's temperature back in Las Vegas had made me used to it. The laces on my boots had become loose, so I knelt down on each leg, one at a time, to retie them. I always tied my shoes this way when I was younger. Quite a specific memory, but it was one in which always came to mind. My childhood had been spent with my adoptive parents, whom I loved dearly. Things seemed different after I lost my Mother, but it had made me stronger. It has been almost 5 years since then, and it still seems that only two days ago that she had spoken to me. Her words were always soft, yet a bit deep. She was like my twin, for she always knew my feelings by one simple flaw in my normal facial expression. She even knew what words to say to ease my pain and misery. Losing her to a brain tumor was devastating. I had lost a piece to my heart since then.

Returning to my normal standing position, I quietly began to walk down the white stripe painted on the street. My composition notebook was shut tightly by my hand, knowing I had finished my inspirational cycle at the table. People, the many victims, walked alongside the crowd hand in hand. I began to ponder on how long until I reached home before I slapped the couples surrounding me. I looked to the sky in thankfulness by the time I finally reached the sidewalk, when I suddenly felt my foot touch another's, creating my fall. I felt my curly black hair fly past me, and jot back down as my palms touched the hot pavement. The crowd cleared by then, aside the other being whose foot has been untangled with mine. I felt the foot move, and sensed a hand in front of me.
"Nice fall." The voice resembled a male.
"I'm just clumsy." I replied as I grabbed ahold of his hand. I could feel the warmth, and I admit I enjoyed it.
"Join the club," he pulled me back up onto my boots as my big blue eyes met his big blue ones.
"Thanks," I let in a small smile, "and sorry."
"Don't apologize," he grinned, "Are you sure you're alright?"

I examined his face. His eyebrows were a bit arched, but they made his eyes stand out even more. His lips were a full flesh of gentle pink, which reminded me of my own. He had a mixture of pale and light tan skin, which seemed to bring charm upon his manly face... even his nose! Might I add that it was not exactly what you would call small, either. What I really noticed was his deep brown hair, which was set in a nicely done faux hawk.

Snapping back to reality, I felt my head somehow manage to shiver. "Yeah, I'm fine." I had almost forgotten to reassure him I was alright.

He did not turn to leave, like most would do in this area of town. Instead, he showed me how outgoing he was to be able to ask me such a thing. "Were you just checking me out?" A smirk consumed his full lips, giving him a devilous look.

My once pale face turned to a deep pink, though I tried to stop it. "No." What else was I supposed to say? Yes? He looked at me for awhile, and finally, he spoke.

"Should I believe that?"

"Yes." I replied dumbly.

"Sorry, I can't." He quickly, yet gently, cupped his palm to the top of my hand, a pin in his other one. I felt the ink tickle my palm, soon hearing the sound of the clicking of the cap as I lost the warmth of him. I looked down at my hand, only to see numbers one it. I felt myself in disbelief, and I knew he had guts. Looking back up, I saw his manly figure (suiting his face just fine) walk down the street of my opposite direction. His name remained unknown until I gazed back down where his number was. Tre. Thank heavens he wrote it down.

My room had been covered with darkness, my only source of light was the moonlight, which peeked through the tree beside my window. It was my very own superficial bliss. I turned to my side, the ruffling of the sheets hitting my ear drum. My left arm was all that rested above the sheets, aside my head which glanced at the clock. 1:30 AM. Sleep was still in my offer, but I refused to take it. Something had come to mind, but I did not know exactly what I was thinking of. I could feel butterflies tickling my small and empty stomache, as thought I was experiencing society's most popular emotion, love. Who did I love, though? It was not as if I had found "Mr. Right".

My ears continued to search for any source of sound, finally hearing a faint sound of crickets chirping. Suddenly, I heard a sound which was certainly far from faint.

BRIIIING... BRIIIING...
My hand touched the top of my little white telephone. My mind pondered on who could be calling around this time. Dismissing this thought, I pressed the phone against my ear. "Hello?"

"Eleska?"

"I told you to call me Ellie, Celeste."

"Whatever. I need a favor."

"At this time of night?" The urge to sleep came to me now.

"No s**t, my damn car broke down! Pick me up." Celeste was always so persistant and demanding.

My head shook slowly up and down, but I forgot how she couldn't see it, "Alright." Without saying good-bye, I let the phone lay down on the receiver. Black smudge was on top of the handle. Just what I needed to remember the number from Tre. My "fate" awaited as I dragged myself out of bed, not bothering to change out of my plaid boxers and blank tank top.

Thoughts rushed through my head as I began to wonder where Dad parked his car. I knew if it was in the garage that I would be in trouble. I decided to stick to the basics and get my purse, as well as father's keys. I was free of a second trip upstairs, noticing my purse was on the counter. Gently and quietly, I slipped it over my shoulder, keeping my right gripped tightly upon the strap. The loud sound of my father's snoring could be heard in his bedroom, signifying my escape plan would work. I extended my left hand out to the side to avoid banging into something. Finally, I felt the keys on the key hanger. I slowly placed my hand over the two silver keys to avoid the jingling tune. Sliding themp up, I held onto the door knob. The keys were now in my posession. I opened the door as quiet as possible, and slid outdoors. Just as luck would have it, I saw the little black vehicle parked in front of our house. No garage! I unlocked the door after discovering its proper key, and positioned myself inside. I turned the ignition on, and began to drive. Then I remembered. I had forgotten to ask where she was. I decided to call at Starbucks, seeing to it that my brain was in great need of caffeine.

I took a sip from my Frappucino, my eyes becoming a bit less drifty. I was so thankful to be able to come this late. My eyes scanned the large room, only to see one other customer. He looked towards my direction in surprise, and headed over to sit beside me.
"Hi!" His enthusiasm seemed sereal compared to mine right now.
"Wow Tre, it's quite a surprise to see you."
"Same with you. I thought you would be in bed by now."
"My friend's car broke down. What about you?" I sipped some more of my Frappucino.
"I couldn't fall asleep, so I stayed up since 1:00." Somehow, he reminded me of an owl. I felt is best to be simple, so I nodded with a smile. He was not done speaking with me.
"Should I get you and your friend a ride?"
I paused, thinking for a bit. I knew I was too tired, but I had to return my father's car.
"Only if we take my car."
"Sure thing." He stood up, and I did the same.
[[Later on...]]
"So, where to?" Thankfully, I had just finished the call with Celeste. I cooperatively told him, and he smiled.
"That's my neighborhood."
