hiya, just read an interesting article on livescience.com about a study currently underway about trying to better understand horse whinnies.
here's a link if you're interested... http://www.livescience.com/animalworld/060605_horse_talk.html
so i was wondering, what is the clearest message your horses give to you? can you describe the sound of it?

my mare has it timed exactly how long it takes for me from tying her up on the side of the barn, to go inside, get her grain and supplements, and come back out. a couple times i havent been about to find the right size of scoop, and she whinnies right about when i should have been coming around the corner. lol, its pretty funny. if i start walking back out (its on gravel so she can hear me, but she cant see me), if i stop walking she'll whinnie, too. lol

Freedom nickers the whole way when she walks up to me but sometimes she is SO quite that the only way you can tell she is nickering is because her nostrils are quivering! Its so cute! Peppy nickers too. Mainly when she thinks she is about to get food! razz

Fear.
It's a snort, and then perhaps a short, grunting nicker, and they raise their head up high, quivering and stomping their feet, moving backwards or away. There's a difference between surprise and fear.
There's nothing more understadable in a horse than fear. You can FEEL it.
And then joy. Huffing breaths, pounding hooved, muscles quivering with the anticipation of the run.
Those two are the clearest.

With Silver, it's boredom. He makes this really LONG, drawn-out grunting sound and then snorts immediately, so that there's no pause between the two; it's hilarious.
Sounds like "URRRRRRRRRRRRRR[snort]" xd

Turned head towards pasture, perked ears, flared nostrils, high, defined whinny = I WANT MY BEST FRIEND! o_O;;;
Soft nicker, pulling at reins, perked ears towards horses = I SEE MY BUDDY! Buddy come here!

x.Marsh[mel]low.x Turned head towards pasture, perked ears, flared nostrils, high, defined whinny = I WANT MY BEST FRIEND! I know THAT one well! Only Susie did it to me as opposed to another horse XD When we were moving from our old place on a hill directly across the road from where we are now, we were always down on the new lot working on something, preparing to move the trailer and barn etc., and Susie would be up on the hill in her paddock.. We'd call her name and wave and MAN she got excited, hahaha. It was a really high, loud whinny.. As if she knew she had to yell for us to hear her xd And usually when I head to the barn from the house, she'll see or hear me and let out a low whinny, sometimes I don't hear it but I see her nostrils quiver. She's like "Hey, what's up. Got food?" biggrin

Sometimes Scarlett will do this grunt/whine thing when I'm asking her to do something hard and she doesn't want to. The only other time she makes noise is when I would come out the back door in the morning or evening to feed her.

When Cheyenne got injured, the stable owner took care of her foot when I wasn't around, but then one day she just forgot about Cheyenne in the barn and went to teach a lesson with my girl standing all alone in the middle of the barn with an owie foot ._. I walked into the barn and she SCREAMED like "GET YOUR a** OVER HERE I'M LONELY AND WANT A HUG!"
