Hey everyone, just joined up! Anways,... Is there an easy way to get ubuntu to compile all of its installed packages from source, preferrably optimized? I'm on older hardware, and am always looking for ways to boost my performance.

While new package installs can be done by using .deb source packages (available using apt-get or synaptic {recheck synaptic}), Ubuntu really wasn't made to be recompiled and optimized, I believe. Perhaps Gentoo Linux would be more in the direction you would like to try?

I've been using gentoo since before Ubuntu was created - love the system even more than ubuntu.
Any help you need on a gentoo box I'd be happy to provide (with in reason) but a warning: the install isn't nearly as easy, and while experience with linux isn't strictly required, I haven't seen many people happy with gentoo that don't know what they're doing.
You may wish to give Ubuntu a try for a while, as a gentoo install on older hardware is usually long and painful. On a dual Athlon MP system (dual 2400s with a gig of RAM) it took me 3 days to compile everything. For a workstation, you'll be compiling twice as much code as I did (I didn't compile X, Gnome, etc) and on a Pentium class CPU, running at 90 MHz, I've installed a full gentoo desktop. Took me 11 days of compiling to do so.
Make sure it's worth it for you, first, as a performance boost from source compiles generally isn't more than 5 or 6 seconds per week, if that, that you'll save over all...

I've got a decent amount of Linux experience, roughly two years now. I've used Red Hat, (K)ubuntu, Mandriva, and SuSE. Gentoo was such an absolute b***h I gave up on it. I'm using Mandriva at the moment, and am looking into optimizing it. It uses .rpms *blah* . I miss synaptic cry

I run gentoo on servers, workstations, routers, and a ton of other things, and I don't do it because I'm a massochist, I assure you smile

Its under System > Administrative Tasks > Package Manger (I know its listed as "Package Manager, but its really Synaptic, you also have ubuntu's own package manager, however, the two can't be open at the same time).

I know that synaptic is included with Ubuntu, Ubuntu is where I first used the apt package manager. But Ubuntu ticks me off with the no-root policy. Enough to make me swtich to Mandriva, which aside from the better IceWM support, is harder to work with. And Phase, I'd like to take you up on your gentoo offer.

You do know you can enable root by simply typing this: sudo passwd , it'll ask you for whatever password you want. XD
