There are a few conflicting views in the feminist theory about shaving. One is that we should endorse most current fashion (such as shaving, short skirts, tight shirts, pants below the hips for guys, etc.) and thus promotes shaving as an empowering tool. And then there are others who say that shaving (especially legs) puts women at a disadvantage because it subjects them to a male's view of beauty (the same can be said for males, I suppose, although it's less prevalent in my school.)

There's a certain clash between these two views, and for me, it culminates at a point where I'm standing in front of my closet wondering to whose image I'm conforming. I don't shave my legs, but I do shave my armpits... I'm not quite sure why.

So the questions are:
Do you shave? Where?
Which of the theories do you support? Do you have a different view?
General fashion and its impacts.

I don't shave my legs. I'm secure enough with myself that I don't feel I have to. I started shaving when I was in middle school because of peer pressure, but I'm definitely over that now. I shave my armpits because the hair there annoys me.

Also, shaving takes too much time and money, two things I like to save. It's not worth it to me, and my girlfriend doesn't mind, so it's fine for me.

I'm thinking about shaving my armpits because hair there is just plain annoying and traps smell too easily. Other than that I really don't care either way if a woman shaves her legs or not. Whatever makes the person happy is what they should strive for and I don't find shaven or unshaven legs attractive anyway. I prefer a woman with confidence in her appearance more than anything. I do think that arm hair is cute for guys and girls because it adds more to a sense of individuality to each person.

I do wonder why people are so at war with their bodies sometimes. Shaving, tattoos, piercings, etc. Why can't people be happy the way they are? It seems like too many people want to change something.

I started a "shaving" forum in ED a while ago--there's some good discussion in it for those who are interested.

I shave both my armpits and my legs, due to the fact that I think it's weird not too, and it feels weird, to me. Body hair is creepy to me, on both legs and arms, on both guys and girls. I shave because I feel it's necessary, and don't like walking around with hair on my legs or armpits, it's just a comfort thing for me.

I agree. I don't know why, but I find excessive body hair rather disgusting. Not just on women either, but on men.
My last boyfriend was one of the hairiest people I've met. I felt like taking some Nair to his legs. Lol.

I find back hair really creepy...lol. I just wish more guys would shave...I don't know why, it just bugs me that girls are always rushing around trying to be perfectly hair free on their legs and armpits, while guys are all "Screw that" and don't bother shaving anything but beards/mustaches most of the time.

I have back hair. stare Then again, I have hair just about anywhere people do get hair. Feet, hands, back, nipples, even a bunch of hair that goes from my bellow button right down to my pubic hair. I also have a little bit of hair on my shoulders.

I personally think that women should be less worried about how hairless they are a focus on its good aspects (such as warmthd the like.) What is the real reason behind shaving leg hair? Is it comfort or is it how others see you?

History would point towards the latter.

Quote:
Before the advent of razors, some humans removed hair using two sea shells to pull the hair out. Later, around 3,000 BC, when copper tools were developed, humans developed copper razors. The idea of an aesthetic approach to personal hygiene may have begun at this time, though Egyptian priests may have practiced something similar to this earlier. Alexander the Great strongly promoted shaving during his reign in the 4th Century BCE.

I shave my legs and armpits. Sometimes.
The sight of the hair doesn't bother me - but in the summer it's nice for my skin to feel smooth when I sleep.
I absolutely will not shave my pubes. I'll trim them - but shaving takes too much time and effort and it makes me feel like a kid again.

I think it's funny society wants women to shave, wax, or dehair everything - except their head, then that's gross. I don't think shaving is necessary at all - but it's up to each individual woman to decide. My last girlfriend, though, said I couldn't be a feminist andshave my legs - which I think is absurd.

Anyways, that's my opinion on this.

Just about every social behaviour is a circular causality. Shaving included.

Shaving was not done really until after the first world war. And even then, it really didn't pick up in popularity until the 1950s. One could argue that this is a classic "hallmark" situation, in which companies just popularized the idea of shaving to sell more razors and other related products. Regardless of which, in general it is a completely illogical waste of time to shave one's self.

Of course, that could just be my opinion wink

In general, feminist should be able to make what choice they want on the subject. Feminism is about women (and men) being able to control their own bodies, including how they look. So if a women want's to shave, then why not, it's ok in my book. They are not breaking any "feminist rules."

Now as for shaving, which places women dependent on the male gaze. I would say this is true. And no matter how much personal choice is involved, it is virtually unavoidable. The way our society is structured, and the way that social behaviours like these are popularized in the media, makes the idea of personal choice seem impossible. But even so, it is still a choice.
I'm not going to turn up my nose at a women (or man) who shaved, or didn't. It's your hair, do what you want with it smile

For myself personally, I don't shave anything. I don't like to, it wastes a lot of time and money (lots of money) which I don't have surprised and it dries out my skin too much. It burns, and you get ingrown hairs, it's just uncomfortable to me. I don't like it smile

sweatdrop that's a little extreme, all girls i know that are bi or lesbian don't seduct to boys, but they still shave because they themselves find it attractive

as long as you shave, me shave for the sake of preventing public embarrassment and avoiding (whatever the word for singling out is) believe me, you have much much more support from friends if you shave at least once every 2 months

That is exactly the problem I'm talking about. What kind of friends would tell you what to dow ith your own body? What kind of friends would tell you when and what to shave?

I only shave my armpits, and I've recieved neither criticism nor support regarding the subject from my friends because it is irrelevant to whether or not I'm a good friend. My point is: it shouldn't matter because it is only hair. My personal debate in the begining of the thread was exactly against opinions such as you expressed, because I saw too many people who told me not to wear shorts. That is why I was wondering to whose ideals I was conforming and whether I should or not.
