Through the mist and underbrush of the forest, a rough path winds across the land, leading all who might cross it toward the refuge of Windsor Academy. It's location is strictly guarded, and without the aid of explicit direction, the path itself is impossible to find. Even once this magical walkway is identified, you are not alone. You are being watched, and your motivations are being evaluated.
Come with a heart ready to learn, a soul that seeks to be enriched, a mind yearning for understanding beyond the realms of convention. Only then will the guardians of this path let you by, permitting you to enter the grounds of Windsor Academy. If you should reveal a sinister plot, your character will be tested, and if you fail, you will not be heard from again.
So, with caution, let your feet tread across the sacred ground. Walk the enchanted pathway, and find yourself in a sanctuary for people just like you.
Welcome home, traveler.

Leaves rustled across the grass speckled linear strip of flattened ground that cut through the densely wooded forest. It was a quiet night other than the few wisps of breeze that fought its way through the branches and the gentle stirring of owl's wings. Yet another presence lurked in the shadows there, purple eyes gleaming like pinpoints of light in the darkness.
Her dark skin provided perfect cover for the young half-drow as she stayed off the path, choosing to manuever her way through the underbrush instead. This was the way she had heard. This was the path that she knew she had to find. Still, there was a heavy rock rolling around in her stomach, making her nervous, and when she got nervous, she got sloppy.
Tucking a silvery strand of hair behind her left ear, Alauniira glanced from left to right wondering within her mind, Does this place even exist? Despite her reservations, the half-elf would not stop now. It would do her no good.
After all, where else did she have to go?

Harold Windsor had been notified of the presence of a mysterious young woman heading toward the Academy only a few moments earlier. He had received word that a half-drow elf was interested in attending Windsor, and he remembered being practically dumbstruck. Their race had all but kept to themselves, leading Harold to believe that they might not even truly exist. He had never met a drow afterall, and the only information he received seemed to be based purely on myth. Their skin was as dark as the night, something to help them sneak about, he had been told.
He felt his feet leave the floor of his study almost immediately after receiving word that she had begun the trek up the rather large hill upon which Windsor Academy sat. Most of the students already enrolled there had never met a drow, and he did not want her first experiences there to only solidify the abandonment that led her there in the first place. He had decided long ago to meet her before she reached the grounds and explain the delicate situation at hand.
His dark brown leather boots dug slowly into the dirt pathway as bits of muddied dirt clung to the bottoms of his finely tailored black pants. The cloak he had thrown on at the last minute, rustled noiselessly in the wind, as he noted the eerie silence of nature around him.
Only a few meters away, he noticed a moderately tall young woman, draped carefully in a loose travelers cloak. He felt his heartbeat accelerate significantly, ashamed that he was so scared of the unknown. His pale blue eyes turned toward the girls face, surprised to note that her olive tinged skin was not unlike his own. Wisps of black hair framed her alarmingly human face. When he saw her eyes, the illusion began to vanish. The soft purple of her eyes brought the true nature of her appearance to his attention, something he attributed to years of practice seeing through illusions. It was not so frightening as he expected, but that could be in large part to seeing her first appear as a normal young woman. The blue-grey tint of her skin was actually quite lovely set against the trees as it was. Rather than simply stare at her unusual appearance in silence, he ventured a question: "Ms. Rilynduis, I presume?"

The sound of boots on the pathway had sent Alauniira's defenses into immediate alarm, pushing her to throw up her walls. In this case, it was an old stand-by that she had used so many times that it was as natural as breathing for her.
Dark skin quickly paled to a more olive-toned hue, and wisps of white and silver turned to black. Her eyes remained purple, but the effect was enough to present Alauniira as an entirely different species of elf. Besides, at her age and with her training, this was the best disguise she could muster, and it was practically impenetrable to an untrained eye.
Still, even with her disguise, Niira was prepared to bolt at the first sign of hostility on the part of this strange man. Her feet stood at attention to run, but she lost her nerve at the sound of her name dripping off foreign lips. Unable to fight a kneejerk response, her voice raised in response, "...yes?"
Well, he didn't seem hostile. Besides, as far as she knew, he couldn't see through her illusory disguise, which gave the elf a strong sense of security. Awaiting a response from the man, she shifted uncomfortably, keeping her eyes locked on his.

Harold nodded gently toward her, hoping to show her that he meant absolutely no harm. He held out both arms in a peaceful manner, a suggestion that he carried no weapons with him. This was not unusual as Harold Windsor never carried weapons with him. He did own a few, but he kept them locked up in his office, only to use them when absolutely necessary. He was truly a pacifistic man and lamented that he even needed to train these young gifted students for self defense.
In the midst of his thoughts, he shifted his gaze back toward the obviously unsure Alauniira and spoke slowly, "My name is Harold Windsor. I'm the headmaster of the nearby school, Windsor Academy. I do believe you're looking for our place of learning?" He paused momentarily, allowing her to process. "I want to be honest with you, Miss Rilynduis, we have never had a student of drow descent enroll in our school before. I'm not certain how the students will respond. I think it's best if you maintain your.." his words trailed off for a moment, hoping she understood his words, "defenses until you're more comfortable with the students."
He waited momentarily to gauge her reaction and hoped that she had not taken his words the wrong way. He actually believed quite firmly that the students would accept her given time. He just worried that without time, it might be a rough procedure. He ran his right hand through his short, finely cut greying hair and shifted his weight to his left foot, keeping his eyes on her exotic purple irises.

Alauniira blinked twice in the slow, contemplative way that suggested she was truly listening. It surprised her to have bumped into the Headmaster himself of all people, but even more to see that he had recognized her as a half-drow. Of course, she should have expected that. Despite how impressive her deceptive appearance was, it could still be seen through by skilled and well-trained magic-users, especially when they knew what they were looking for.
The young girl stood silently as Headmaster Windsor continued, dropping her eyes at his vocalization of what she was. There were hardly- if any -half-drow children in these parts (largely because they are killed if a 'mistake' happens), and Niira fully understood how hostile she was perceived to be. She descended from the cruelest race of elves to have existed, and personally, her adopted family had been particularly evil and violent toward outsiders before they knew that she was one too and set out to slaughter her for tainting the bloodline.
She was too much of a drow to be accepted by anyone else and too much of them to be accepted by the drow elves. "I will maintain my guise for my own protection," she said flatly. Yeah, so she didn't quite trust this guy. Innocent as he may seem, Alauniira had learned not to trust the seemingly nice ones. It had been in her experience that those were truly the ones that were most wicked of all. "But, yes, I understand, Headmaster Windsor." Not rude, no. Just to the point.
Besides, shouldn't he be telling her to be herself? Oh well. Who was she kidding? No one liked the drow. No one trusted them. The worst part is... they were right. Purple eyes flickered over the Headmaster's shoulder. "So this is the way to the Academy?" she inquired, craning her neck to see down the pathway as far as she could.

Harold Windsor could not help but notice Alauniira's mood change at the mention of her race. His own blue eyes followed her violet ones as they sank to the ground. His heart shuddered momentarily as he had not wanted to cause any more hurt to a girl who seemed so terribly damaged already. He listened to her reserved response and felt his heart lighten a bit. Despite what he could only imagine she had been through, she seemed to be a fairly understanding individual, something he greatly appreciated and respected.
Her voice pierced through his musings. He moved his left hand gently, carrying the long sleeve of his cloak with it and pointed back toward the Academy. "Yes," he started, "The main campus of the Academy lies at the top of this hill. Although, we technically are on the grounds at the moment. Some teachers hold classes out here in the woods or lake." He motioned for her to follow him. He wanted her to be able to acclimate to the new school as soon as possible.
"We have your dormitory prepared already," his voice was strong but pleasant, a juxtaposition that carried through most of the aspects of his personality. "We'll have to discuss which extra courses you want to enroll in.. that is besides the required classes," he chattered a bit nervously as she seemed quite solemn. "I don't believe you have a roommate just yet, but we tend to get many students later in the school year. I wouldn't celebrate just yet!" He offered her a kind smile, hoping to lighten her mood.

As Headmaster Windsor moved forward, Alauniira was careful to follow behind him, trailing just a bit as to keep her distance. In drow culture, it was shameful to invade someone's personal space so Niira seemed to always stand a polite handful of steps away from people, despite her attempts to shake this habit.
"It must be a large campus," Niira rambled, hoping to break up the silence in the still of the night. If she was this close to the school, then she really didn't have any dangers to worry about.
...right?
Pushing a branch away from her face, the elf was thrilled to hear that she was living alone, and a little less than thrilled to hear that it wasn't a permanent thing. "Oh," she muttered under her breath. Hoping to move the conversation away from her roommmate status, Alauniira glanced over to the Headmaster and asked, "So, this is a small school, then?"

Harold nodded patiently toward Alauniira, a bit sad that his personality wasn't going over quite as well with the stoic half-elf. "ah well, you can't win them all," he thought to himself as his boots continued the monotonous journey up a rather large hill toward his fathers school. He heard her voice and attempted to answer her when he felt a strong wind approach from their back. He turned suddenly, looking back down the path they had come from. His eyes flickered over to Alauniira's face. "Someone is playing with wind magic, it appears," he said calmly, trying to remember if he had any other requests for admission to the school. They were nearly half way up the hill, but judging by the speed and ferocity of the wind that swept past, the caster could not be that much further back at all.
"Would you induldge me, by any chance, Miss Rilynduis?" He spoke kindly, and gestured down the path. He wanted to be certain he wasn't leaving any pupils behind.

Strands of magic in the air came flowing through the trees toward the student and Headmaster as they were making their trek toward the campus, causing both to halt and turn aboutface. Before she could comment, Alauniira heard the strong voice of Headmaster Windsor cutting through the magical breeze. "I felt it too," Alauniira chimed in, not to be one-upped.
Afterall, in the grand scheme of elemental magic, she was most adept with wind magic, but she had always focused more on the integration of wind and water magic to change the weather, though she was far more suited for illusion and shadow magic.
"Indulge you in what?" came her defensive reply to the Headmaster's statement. Alauniira was out of her element, and it made the tempermental elf even quicker to anger. Her question was answered though as the Headmaster guided her attention in the opposite direction of the school. "Oh," she said again in a way that meant she realized she had been foolish. It was that same 'oh' that would come to be recognized as a staple in her vocabulary. "Yes, sure," Niira responded again, letting her temper flare back down.
Even as a half-drow, her genes still gave her a few nasty aspect of the drow temperment.

Harold Windsor nodded his appreciation toward Alauniira and was quite taken with how unique she appeared in his eyes. Given his ability to see through her shadow magic, he saw many features belying her drow ancestry, but as he was not actively attempting to overcome her deception, her appearance would occasionally switch back to that of a wood elven girl. It was quite a unique experience to watch her hair fade from color to color. Sometimes, when he looked at her, she appeared to have olive tanned skin but maintained shockingly white hair. It was the first time in all of his fifty three years that he had ever experienced anything like this. He was a bit caught off guard, wondering about it when he heard a voice call from a nearby tree.
Harold wracked his mind. One of the divinators at the school had mentioned some new students who were headed that way, but for the life of him he could not remember the name of the second. He had been so preoccupied with the young half-drow, that he all but forgot about the human headed their way. He spoke under his breath, "Artas? Artan? Artoin? Ar..tois?" he then exclaimed, "Oh yes, that's it! Miss Artois? Is that you?" he called gently into the shadow, knowing full well that he must be correct; for who else could it possibly be? He decided it might be best to answer the girls question in case she hoped to meet the strangers with hostility, "My name is Harold Windsor. I'm the headmaster of Windsor Academy. Would you like to join Miss Rilynduis and myself as we make our way up to the school?"

The forest at night was probably Alauniira's favorite setting. She lived for the rustling of the underbrush and dark shapes of trees creaking in the wind because, more often than not, she was one of those dark shapes, blending seamlessly with her surroundings.
Hearing the approach of another, Niira had to remind herself not to dive into the bushes and disappear immediately. If the Headmaster wasn't worried, then she wouldn't be either. Besides, the half-drow had spent most of her life running, and it would take something of a miracle for a human to catch her if she got a head start. And of course, there was also the issue of her having to drop her illusory appearance if she really wanted to become invisible.
Planting her feet, she placed a hand on her hip, fingering the vial at her waist. Who goes there? she thought critically. Is she a footman? Passing it off as an idiosyncracy of this new girl's character, Alauniira kept her eyes locked in the direction of where the sound was coming from.
She had hoped to avoid people when she first got to the school long enough for her to get settled and get her bearings together, but unfortunately, it looked like the duo was about to become one member bigger.
