What books are any of you reading at the moment? Is there something you've read in the past you'd like to recommend?

I'm slowly working my way through The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami. I have a really weird relationship with this book. I'll read about a hundred pages and then suddenly become disenchanted with it, and ignore it for a week or so. But when I go to pick it up again, I'll be back in love with it. Regardless, it's extremely well written and I love Murakami's ability to work the surreal into seemingly normal settings.

I just finished Kafka On The Shore by the same author. It's a trainwreck of a book. I can't say I liked or didn't like it, but it really left a kind of impression on me. Sometimes I'll find myself thinking of a line from the book out of nowhere. The Oedipal prophecy stuff is a little off-putting, but I think it's worth reading. :]

I'm reading The Lovely Bones by Alice Seebold right now. :3 It's a good book...

I reccomend Memiors of a Geisha to anyone... the movie was good, but it left out some details, but that's okay I guess, or the movie would be too long. xp

I also like the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer... ^^; Er, it's sort of a kid's book, but I like how the whole idea is original. 3nodding

Oh! Carrie by Stephen King is good too... it's short, and a little twisted is all I have to say. xp

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley is a great book... very satirical/futuristic. 3nodding It's not like Star Trek though... it is a great spin off of modern science... basically things that did not happen during the mid-20th century. Reccomend it to anyone who is tired of sappy "happy-ending" type stories.

Er, that's it. ^^ Or, that's all I can think up of right now...

thanks! I've heard one of my friends talk about The Lovely Bones and I wasn't sure if it'd live up to all the hype it was getting. But I'll be sure to give it a shot.

I've read the first two Artemis Fowl books, I believe. Her writing style is really involving, considering its target audience. razz I hope I'll get around to reading the other ones, one day.

i'm a big Stephen King fan which is why I'm sad to say I haven't read Carrie yet. another book for me to add to my list!

Oh, I also want to recommend the Keys to the Kingdom series by Garth Nix. It's also kind of a kid's book, but I never get bored of it. Although he describes things in a way even kids can understand, the worlds he create still manage to be very vivid. Anything by Nix is good, really, including his Sabriel series. :]

Yayz! More books to add for the summer~! <3 But damn english summer reading... } razz

The Shining I've heard is also pretty good... my sister really likes the "Dark Tower" series as well. I've tried to get into the series, but it's too long for me. ;__;

Have you heard about the A Million little Pieces (something like that) controversy with Oprah? xD The guy lied in some parts... I mean, wouldn't it be obvious if it wasn't real? xp

Anything by Trudi Canavan. The Black Magician trilogy... I worship it. Which is strange, because I usually read more humour/modern day set books rather than fantasy, but she really got me with that series. 3nodding

If you like fantasy stories, I really suggest the Sevenwaters Trilogy.

In that trilogy, the books: Daughter of the Forest, Son of the Shadows and Child of the Prophecy.

There's a bit of sexual content in each, but it's not DETAILED.

I finished The Lovely Bones and I'm starting to read Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser. xp I heard it was pretty gross on what they do to the fast food... DDD: But, I'm just on the intro, so I don't know what disgusting crap is described yet.

Off topic: This new Gaia system is throwing me off... ;__; A tad hard to navigate. Did anyone recieve the new 'freebie' items?

I have two mules. :'D

I'd like free stuff at cons, but I've never got anything free except a conbook, because the only one I've ever been to was very small and I only attended for like... five hours. xd

I'm not reading anything right now, but I suggest Twilight, by Stepehnie Meyer.
It's a romance/action/suspense story about vampires.
It's the best.
