I just started playing a few weeks ago and it seems that my D string is messed up. I have trouble getting it to play, especially when I try to play any other notes on the string. It will play after I've put rosin on the bow, but soon it will not make much noise. Any ideas what it might be?

Hmm, I can't say that that's a problem I've ever had.... are you sure the string is tuned properly, and it's still in good condition (IE - not fraying or anything)? Is your bow tight enough?
Do you have a violin teacher or anything who you could show it too? It might help for someone who knows something about violins to actually take a look at it. 3nodding
I dunno... maybe someone else out here has had this problem? I'm afraid I'm not being very helpful. sweatdrop

have you changed the strings sence you first started to play? that happened with my violin, that and the d string would slip down to a B flat after every few minutes, because it hadn't been played in 5-8 years! if you haven't already, change the strings, one, it might help, and two, it's good to learn how to do this RIGHT AWAY! smile change your strings every few months AT LEAST! find a brand that you like, and stick to it too - the people at the music store will probably be able to tell you what strings are already on your fiddle. some signs of needed changing of any string might be: the lead rubbing off on your fingers; the string wire fraying on the top of the fingerboad (must learn the name for this...where your actually fingering the strings, grr!), or the yarn/thread at the end by the fine-tuning pegs fraying. that kinda reminds me that i DESPERATLY need to change my own strings...hehe...he. erm.

it might be that your D string is a false string... ~cuz some strings don't play as well as others (or not at all) therefore they are false, and perhaps your violin store will give you another one free... maybe... also, it might be because your bow hair needs to be changed... or your bow should be rehaired... ~you should rehair your bow once a year. and yeah... that's all i can think of for such a problem... 3nodding

This is kind of way out there, but is there perhaps too much rosin on the D string? This guy at a festival I went to took someone's violin, and pushed a rag really hard across the strings... it made the most horrendous noise, but after he was finished, the girl could play much louder and better. I don't know if it will actually help your problem, but I did it for my own strings, and it is much nicer; just take a rag and clean your strings. It will make terrible noises... I actually got nauseous. Maybe it won't help your D string... but do it anyway. 3nodding

if u've messed with the pegs or fine tuners it could possibly do something wierd lik that if u do turn the peg push it in when u turn that way it will stick and stay in place and in tune (thats the only thing that i can think of. this doesnt sound lik a problem i've had before sorry sweatdrop )

you might wanna check to see if the string is actually in place on the neck on the violin. There are normally little indents in which to put the string and sometimes the strings pop out of those little dents, thats what happened to mine when my G-string went all out of wack.
