Linux can use windows file sharing easier than windows can use linux file sharing.
Share a drive on the windows system, and look at the network servers applet from the linux system - On my version of gnome, it's Places -> Network Servers, and, it should show up there.
If it doesn't, you may need to mount it the hard way.
From a console, try this:
mkdir /mnt/windows mount -t smbfs \\\\ip.of.winxp.box\Sharename /mnt/windows

And when working vice versa (Windows -> Linux), you can always use the Ext2 driver module from the people www.fs-driver.org I haven't run into any problems using it.

You could also use SSH to transfer files via SCP, which I personaly find to be a bit faster than via Samba, but harder to do.
