"The Good Old Days- They Were Terrible!" is a really good book by Otto L. Bettmann about American cities from right after Reconstruction up to about 1920. That period was... not so fun. haha.

If anyone's interesting in religious history, I reccomend Rabbi Jesus (whether or not you're Christian) because it's writen by a Father, but it looks at the life of Jesus as a Jewish man living in the time, and also goes back to the original Aramaic and explains some "descepencies" or things that were possibly misunderstood through various translations of the Bible. Two of the probably more controversial (to Christians) things he brings up are the usages of "Son of God" and whether the implication with the phrasing is actually "a son of God" and the traslation of the word more closely resembling "maiden" - which would mean simply unwed women, virignal or not - as "virgin" to describe Mary.

I reccomand London by Rutherford (who's first name I can't remember at the moment) It's a wonderful book that details the major historical events in the history of London through fictional characters. Very historical, very interesting, one of the best school books ever.

No doubt some have heard me spout it off before, but I truly recommend 'A General Histories Concerning the Robberies and Murders of the Most Infamous Pirates' written in the 1700's by a comtempory sailor of the time when pirates were at their height of powers. It has been translated into modren English so that it is easier to understand, but it hasn't lost its feel of the time. A recommended reading for anyone interested in pirates.

Bathroom Reader Plunges into History is a pretty humorous book about various events in history. There's also www.snopes.com, but I already mentioned that in the American History sticky.

Francia: The Successors of Rome

It's great, it's huge, has info from ancient Egypt to the Normans to the Americas to the Sangoku. I love it. The author is a bit heavy-handed with his theory of history, but the facts are there in black and white WITH, wonder of wonders, heavy annotation and citations!

They both take you there, it doesnt matter as much with that site. You do have to be careful about those things though.

Ahhh! That was a great book heart ! Anyway... I recommend Flyboys to anyone who is really into the World Wars. It's about a small group of men who are captured and sent to a Japanese POW camp in World War II. It's a pretty interesting book, though ,being a novel, probably not entirely factual.
