I hate to reopen old wounds, but do you perfer Tifa or Aerith?
A lot of people hate me for this but I despise Aerith!
I don't know why but, those kind of characters just get to me.
Tifa on the other hand I like. I think she is cool.

Aerith is a character that symbolizes a holy and almost untouchable perfection--Something that Cloud could never have. An unreachable goal.
Tifa on the other hand, is an honest, genuine, good hearted person. A character that symbolizes earthly "perfection". Something befitting of Cloud.
That's how I see it anyway...

I would like to make it clear that I like both of the couples, for some odd reason. ^^;;; I can see both of them working successfully. Sooo...I'll make statements for both. I'm even color-coding. 3nodding
I tend to side more with the AerithxCloud pairing, personally. If you'll recall in the game, Cloud's mother said that he should find a girl that was older than him, so she can take care of him. In FFVII, Aerith was 22, Cloud was 21, and Tifa was 20. And Aerith definitely had the nurturing spirit.
In the beginning stages of FFVII's development, Square had decided on three main characters: Cloud, Barret, and Aerith. Now, in every Final Fantasy game, someone dies and it makes a fairly big impact. The first choice to knock off was Barret, but Square decided to drop the shock bomb, since it would be predictable, and kill off the main female character, Aerith. Since the fans like coupling and all that good stuff, the second main female character, Tifa, was created to fill in Aerith's spot and serve as a possible love interest for our main character.
Let me point out that Square had no set couple. A statement was made that the fans could determine the pairings however they wanted, which is evident with the little dating portion of the game. Hell, Cloud could be paired with Barret. ^^;;; The sexual orientation of the Final Fantasy characters is not set, since Square never made any of that concrete. Cloud could easily be gay. It's all up to fan interpretation.
I don't have as much of an argument for the TifaxCloud pairing, but I'll give it a shot. Just like Aerith, Tifa has a very kind and giving nature. She cares about Cloud's well-being. And for the people who prefer the older guy with the younger girl, she's younger than him, allowing for the maturity gap to shrink, since guys tend to mature slower than girls.
We can all agree that Tifa is a very strong character, mentally and physically. She would have the energy required to keep up with Cloud. Since she is also cheerful, she would be Cloud's better half. It would definitely help him come out of his shell and perhaps allow him to actually enjoy himself once in a while.
However, I feel that Cloud is better off without being in a relationship. He fends pretty well for himself and has trouble accepting help from others. And let's face it, some people are better off on their own. They can have all the friendships they want, but real relationships are a whole different level.

Aeris. I find it strange that everyone is calling her "Aerith", I'm pretty sure when I played the game and everything she was called "Aeris" and not "Aerith".
It has to do with preferences with being a cleric/healer. [I'm a cleric in Maplestory too.] Aeris is indeed a healer so I'm soft with her, she heals. Yea~ However, when I played the game, I didn't level her till her level limit break and she DIED. *cries uncontrollably* I also didn't manage to get Cloud and her into a date. *cries a river*
Whoops, sorry if I'm spoiling the game, btw.
Next, Tifa's attacks are not to my liking at all. Her weapons... "leather gloves"? Okay... fine.... she can do more damage then Aeris, I admit that.
Storyline. Tifa lies to Cloud. Or semi-lies. I know, some of you are going to say, you're going to break Cloud if you do that! But, Cloud is already messed up, sure, go ahead, don't tell him anything so that he'll get even more messed up later on. Her boobs annoy me. She whines about her father, you can't kill Sephiroth, you weakling. (well, she's a wealking compared to Sephiroth). stare
BUT. Big but, I do agree with everything that Tifa just said about supporting TifaxCloud. (see previous post) So, in a way, I'm also okay with TifaxCloud. Although I do tend to lean towards AerisxCloud more.
Aeris on the other hand, is. . . just so as Tifa said "nurturing" that it's kinda cute. And Cloud seems to need to hang to her, IMO at least... so I think it's kinda cute.
After I figure out how to get Aeris and Cloud on a date, I want to get Barret and Cloud on a date... that'll be funny. And interesting.
I ALSO agree with Tifa (wow, I agree with her so frequently) that Cloud is better off not in a relationship right now.
Ah, but if you want to have fun, putting them in yaoi pairings is also amusing. BarretxCloud, *laughs* I can't imagine Barret with Cloud no matter how hard I try.

Aeris and Aerith are both correct translations. If you own the Greatest Hits edition of FFVII, the default spelling for her name was Aerith, like it was in Kingdom Hearts. And since Square provided Aerith as the official spelling for Kingdom Hearts and Advent Children, Aerith isn't wrong. Aeris was the default spelling in the original version of the game. What's my point? Both Aeris and Aerth are correct. ^^;;;
