How to Create a Pet Monster:
Ok, I wrote this to help a friend. I'll warn you this is long! You have decided to create a Pet Monster Trainer, but you aren't sure how to make his fun little Pets! Well, I took an old Pet Monster I made and updated him to D20 so I could show you how to make one. The method for making a D6 Pet Monster is pretty much the same, since I used BESM - Cute And Fuzzy Seizure Monsters for this one, and it's a D6 book. I just used the D20 rules and that book's process. I am assuming you have a copy of the BESM rules so you can look up the Attributes and Defects yourself.

This is pretty much How To Make a Non-Human Character also, though you would have more points for that. I doubt you really want to read all this if your familiar with making BESM characters with Flunkies/Servants. You follow the same rules for making a Pet Monster that you used for creating a character, so ability score and other costs are the same as when you created the Trainer.

The entire Pet Monster Trainer for this example is after the example Pet Monster sheet, complete with a second trained Pet Monster.

My example pet monster, Pika'tulhu is a small creature that looks like a cross between Cthulhu and Pikachu of course! He is short, green, slimy, has pointed ears, a lightning bolt tail, 6 tentacles extending from his face and slithers like a slug or mollusk.

He costs the Trainer 6 character points to build (spent on Pet Monster:1, which you have), this gives you 40 character points to build a monster with. He was inspired by another great Pet Monster trainer game: Pok-thulhu! (click to download it)

A Pet Monster starts with 20 CP. Each level of Pet Monster your Trainer takes gives your Pet Monster 20 more CP. So a level 1 Monster is 40 CP, level 2 is 60 CP and level 3 is 80 CP.

He lives in a small iron statuette of himself, a command word calls him forth.

His Trainer needs the following attributes:
Pet Monster(Pika'tulhu): 1 (6 points/rank),
Train a Cute Monster,
Animal Friendship,
Personal Gear with at least 1 Minor Item (Monster Storage Device)
and the Handle Animal skill.

You must have 1 Pet Monster Attribute and Monster Storage Device for each Pet Monster you have.

Here are his basics:

Name: Pika'tulhu
Race: Pet Monster: 1 (he is a pet monster, rank 1)
Type: Semi-Aquatic (he is an amphibian)
Element: Electricity (this is his special attack form)
Class: Adventurer
(If your GM uses this rule, his class level is equal to the ranks of Pet Monster he has. I allow this rule.)
Gender: Male
Height: 2'
Weight: 40 lbs

STR: 5 -2
DEX: 12 +1 (He has low stats, except DEX)
CON: 7 -2
INT: 3 -4 (only smart enough to do tricks, like "attack")
WIS: 5 -3
CHA: 3 -4

Health Points: 6
Energy Points: 1
Base Attack: +1
Armor Class: +1

Weapon: Tentacles (1d4+str)

Attributes: (I chose the following attributes to begin with, he can fight with his tentacles, he has 6 of them, but attacks with one at a time. They are stretchy. He can see at night, and lives in the water (Immunity is common to PMs). He also has an electric attack. He has no legs, and can swim well)
Attack Combat Mastery: 1 (+1 BA) = 3 points
Darkvision: 1 = 1 point
Elasticity (tentacles): 1 (5x reach, +1 to Unarmed Combat Skills) = 2 points
Extra Arms (6 tentacles): 3 = 3 points
Features (tail, slimy skin, cute ears, gills): 4 = 4 points
Immunity (Water): 1 = 5 points
Narural Weapon (Tentacles): 1 = 1 point
Small Size: 1 = 3 points
Special Attack (shock treatment): 1 (2d8 damage) = 4 points
(Flurry +1, Electric +1, tangle +1, melee -2, trippable -1, static -2)
Special Movement (slithering):1 = 1 point
Water Speed (10mph): 1 = 2 point

Defects: (His defects are for his lack of legs, fire is his weak element, he can only make basic pet noises. He is also ugly, and all Pet Monsters take at least Marked: 2 since they are not human. All Pet Monsters should have Vulnerability or Bane, if not both.)
Awkward: 1
Bane (fire): 1
Cannot Talk: 1 (covers small squidy noises and catch phrase "Pika-lilli!")
Easily Distracted (suffering):1
Marked: 3
Physically Unappealing: 1
Slow Movement: 1
Vulnerability (fire): 1

Feats: (he gets feats from his effective class level only)
Combat Martial Arts

Skills: Ranks (he gets skills by effective class level also. Many skills are not appropriate for Pet Monsters.)
Balance: 1
Hide: 1
Move Silently: 1
Power Usage(shock treatment): 1
Unarmed Attack: 1
Unarmed Defense: 1

There a bunch of notes to show the process, I would usually remove the costs shown and the +1/-1's under Special Attack before using the Pet.

He is pretty much a level 1 Pet Monster now. He never gains experience, but as you gain levels you can allot another 6 points to Pet Monster to give him another level as described under the attribute. At later levels Pika'tulhu will add Psionic to his Elements. He will take Telekenesis (4 cp/rank) or Telekenesis (Water) (2 cp/rank), Mind Control (Pet Monsters) (2 cp/rank). He may also later take Contamination (2 cp/rank) for effect and Extra Attacks (8 cp/rank) to use more tentacle attacks at once. Giving him a Phobia of fire would work well too.

A level 1 Pet Monster Trainer can probably afford one level 2 Pet and a couple level 1 Pets.

The Pet's Stats can be higher, of course, resulting in less points for Attributes. This works well for combat and tough pets, while lower stats and more Attributes work well for many other types. Your pets can be smarter, even smart enough to talk. Some pets morphs from cute forms to large combat forms, some are just big. There is a LOT of room in the Pet creation system for just about any pet, if the GM approves it.

He attacks by shooting his tentacles out and hitting his opponent. His special attacks are "Shock Treatment", where he attacks with a flurry of electrified tentacle blows, and "Super Soaker", where he attacks with a concentrated blast of water from inside his body.

I need to find a way to make it more compact. Stupid lack of tables...

Background:
Aku-chan discovered her powers to work with pet monsters she was a very little girl, and has been training pet monsters since. Her father taught her self-defense because he says it is important for girls to be able to defend themselves. Unarmed Attack: 2
Unarmed Defense: 2

Description:
Terri’roth is a rather large, stupid Pet Monster that resembles a strange cross between a cat and a gorilla, with oversized arms that drag on the ground beside him. His powerful melee attacks are his only asset. His special attack, Ground Pound, can be targeted at the ground or an opponent, dealing Massive Damage either way, but he can only use it a limited number of time before tiring. He uses his tunneling ability to dig up large chunks of earth, which he then hurls at opponents in a special attack called Rock Throw. He can only grunt and does not listen well when angered or hungry. He is not afraid of the water, but functions horribly in it.

At later levels Terri'roth will become BIGGER, stronger, increase his current attack form's power and add secondary special attack forms. Even later he may gain an eyestalk with a 3rd eye and add another element.

I now have a fully functional 1st Level Pet Monster Trainer, with two Rank 1 Pet Monsters, that is suited to a modern era campaign. Aku-chan is slightly over-powered for a Trainer, but because of this she had less points to spend on Monsters. As I said before, a balanced Pet Monster Trainer could have as many as 3 Pet Monsters, with one at Rank 2, or one Rank 3 Monster and a Rank 1 backup.

Also, at later levels Aku-chan won't have to worry about spending many points on herself, and can devote nearly all points from advancement to her Monsters.

Your Pet Monsters and Trainer can be wildly different than this, but the basic concept and method will be the same.
I hope you had as much fun making yours as I had making mine!

I need help. Specifically regarding pmc. Ancillary question: hit dice- am i supposed to assume that i roll the highest with those when determining hp?

Made a generic trainer who i really ought to make more spiffy:

Koji Akamatsu (Pet Monster Trainer) Lv1
Age: 16 H:5'6" W:135 lb Race: Human

STR 10: +0
CON 10: +0
DEX 10: +0
INT 12: +1
WIS 12: +1
CHA 12: +1

HP: 1 (d4)
EP: 13 (d2+12)

SKILLS: Disable Device(3), Gamble(5), Handle Animal(2), Biological Sciences knowledge(3), Nature knowledge(3), Medical(5), Speak Languages(3).

ATTRIBUTES: Pet Monster(2) Lunabukapod, Animal Friendship(1), Train a Cute Monster(1) Inspire Monster.

FEATS: Improved Initiative, Iron Will.

Bla bla bla I think he will be nerdy and without much of a will of his own. Maybe evil, I'm not sure yes. I ought to add defects as well.

So, I munchkind some. I still have quite a bit of cp left that id rather not use but I't's hard to tell if this guy is too strong. As I'm typing this and looking at his profile, im seeing things i could take out. His Bane may be enough to do it. If Pika'thulu held up a ball of lightning for no more three rounds then this guy would be dead. hm. needs some work for sure. Im realising most of this as i type him up. Any suggestions are appreciated. I like him a lot and he would be fun to rp wiht. Especially his special req.

Name: i dunno yet
Race: Pet Monster(2)
Type: Bone Golem Lunabukapod
Element: Death
Class: Adventurer

STR 18: +4
DEX 16: +3
CON 22: +6
INT 5: -3
WIS 5: -3
CHA 2: -5

HP: 10
EP: 22

FEAT: Blind-Fight
SKILLS: Unarmed attack(1) Forearm spikes

ATTRIBUTES:
Natural Weapons(1) Forearm spikes
Armor(1)
Regeneration(1)
Special Movement(1) Dimensional Hop
Energy Bonus(1)
Special Attack(1) Forearm spikes
--- KILLING CRESCENT BLOOD MOON TECHNIQUE!
------- Muscle Powered, Uses Energy (2)
Massive Damage(1) KCBMT!

DEFECTS:
Activation Time(1) KCBMT!
Bane(3) Bright light
Marked(2) Inhuman
Physical Impairment(2) can only grunt
Special Requirement(2) nightly, blood

WEe. Koji will wear a necklace made out of bone and then lay it on the ground and chant to summon lunabukapod. Lunabukapod does his bidding because of whatever brought them together in the first place but then gets all whiny and indignant afterwards because he needs fresh blood as a result of his summoning or something like that. SO koji has to, against his better judgment, -or not if he's evil- befriend little woodland creatures to toss them into lbp's mouth. hahaha. mental image. LBP will be 8 ft tall, and look like a skeletal verson of a golem from monster rancher, except that his bones are thick like those golems, (not as thick but still exageratted for cuteness) LBP still has big eyes and a small mouth and is pleasurable when not battling (if koji isnt evil). His head will either look like a humans skull or have horns. The dimension hop special movement is so that he can come when he's summoned. When charging Killing crescent blood moon technique, lunabukapod glows red, then he (im not sure how far someone can move in battle without a penalty) but he moves forward and slashes horizontally with both of his forearm spikes. Speaking of which, these spikes extend from the top of his forearms and protrude a foot or two (havent decided that either) past his fists. They'll probably be made retractable.

So here's my rar rar like a dungeon dragon pet monster that needs help. He can still be cute. I magine a chibi of this guy sitting crosslegged squeezing the blood from a decapitated woodland creatures body into his mouth, like a capri sun. and then his trainer standing by with a sweat mark. both of them around a dimly lit campfire.

*shoe flies out of nowhere and hits head*

Thank you, bowp, if you have time to look over this.

Awesome! mrgreen I'm glad you posted him here! Now maybe some other people with questions will use this thread.

I will tear through Koji and Lunabukapod and make some suggestions. I already have one though, what if someone knocks LBP out? Don't you want a backup Pet?

I don't want to disseminate my affection. Maybe I will if i can come up with a cool nother one, but I couldn't come up with anything besides him. I may make a fire one just to be ba and cute and useful (like described in the book) but I had this monster rancher theme running in my head and i like the idea of sitting on a golems shoulder and having a mindless tough monster to protect me and serve me and what notzizzle.

Okay. I really don't know what I'm doing here. So I spent 12 CP to give me 40 CP to mess around with, unless that's truly overkill.
Name: Jamirus
Race: Pet Monster 2 (He's a Pet Monster, Rank 2, hatchling.)
Type: Wind-Based
Element: Wind
Class: Monster
Gender: Male
Height: 9'2 (Jamirues get Big, and Fast.)
Weight: 320 lbs

Defects:
Awkward Size: 1
Marked: 3
Physically Unappealing: 2
Bane: (Lightning): 2
Bane: (Earth-Based effects): 2
Easily Distracted: (Wind, he likes to fly.)
In total, that gives me... 52 CP to play with.

Now, for his stats...:

Strength: 11 (+0)
Dexterity: 10 (+0)
Constitution: 13 (+1)
Intelligence: 15 (+2)
Wisdom: 10 (+0)
Charisma: 4 (-3)

Which equal 32 pts in the end. This leaves me with 20 points to play with,

Which means, I'm going to do this...
Attributes:
Magic: Level 2 (20 CP for special attacks) (8 pts)
Flight: Level 1 (He hasn't attained his full flight abilities, he's only really an older hatchling.) (4 pts)
Extra Energy: level 1 (+20 MP) (3 pts)
Natural Weapons: Claws (1 pt) (1d4)
Heavy Armor Level 1: reduce all attack damage by 4 damage (4 pts)

Now for his Magic abilities:
--Special Attack (12 pts) Ice Breath: (3d8 base damage), Short Range, Slow x1, Area Effect, Spreading, 3d8 damage 12 MP
--Special Attack (8 pts) Firebal: (2d8 damage), Short Range, Area Effect, 2d8 damage

I'm not really sure what to do from here.

Nice start 3nodding

The 60 Character Points are for creating a character with the class Pet Monster Trainer, as per the normal BESM D20 Rules. How many points you get for your monsters depends on how much you spend in the Pet Monster Attribute of the Trainer. Look through Valrech's and my unfinished Trainers for ideas on how this works while I write up some suggestions for your Monster 3nodding

Wait... I had 60 to play with, not 40?
PostPosted: Tue Jun 27, 2006 12:44 pm

Sorry for the double post... But... if I have 20 points to play with... due to me buying another level of Pet Monster...

Jamirus gets a rank of Super Strength, increasing his sterngth to 18 for 4 pts
He also gets another level of Heavy Armor. Jamirusi are TOUGH!!
In addition to all of that, he gets two ranks of Damn Healthy!: Jamirusi do not only shrug off damage, they have plenty of HP to make taking them down a chore. That costs 4 pts, giving him another 2d8 hp.

I'm also going to increase his Flight to level 2. They're flyers after all. That costs 4 pts

Okay, Feats... I'm going to give my monster Martial Combat Arts. I don't know how much that costs or anything like that... Gotta help me here, BOWP.

Oh hey, in the setting where he's from (Dragon Warrior Monsters,) They aren't stored anywhere, he'll just follow me around.

rofl I double post all the time...

I gave out 60 CP to each Trainer in this game, because I feel everyone should have at least 2-3 Pet Monsters and some Trainer attributes. I would suggest one level 2 monster and a couple level 1 Backups to start.

Trainers will get experience and advance in level during the Tournaments, allowing you to improve both Trainer and Monsters (and even add Monsters!) as you advance through the Tournament Ranks. Your Pets do not gain experience, but the Trainer gets it from using them.

A Pet Monster starts with 20 CP. Each level of Pet Monster your Trainer takes gives your Pet Monster 20 more CP. So a level 1 Monster is 40 CP, level 2 is 60 CP and level 3 is 80 CP.

Sounds like you're getting the hang of Attributes for Monsters pretty fast. Each Monster gets feats and ability increases from the same chart for normal characters. So a 1st level monster gets 1 feat and a third level monster gets 2 feats. At fourth level the monster gets an ability increase. You can buy extra feats for 2 CP each.
