It was a strange day when this child arrived in my arms.. I know I had told myself I would adopt this Shaman-to-be, raise them to be wonderful and amazing at what they did... But I never expected a baby, let alone one so beautiful.

Lain is a darling child. She remains quiet, opening her eyes on occasion and watching the world with an expression that makes me think of awe only for my mind to tell me that the child probably can't really feel such a thing yet. Or can she? After all, this isn't a child of normal caliber. She is to be a shaman.

Such a beautiful baby... I swear to myself, I will raise her properly and perfectly. She'll make all of us proud.

Nearly two months have passed and I'm horribly sorry that I've failed to maintain this journal.

Lain has gotten used to her environment - to say the least. She's curious about everything, and, oftentimes, will get into things that she really shouldn't when she knows I'm not around! But we've all adjusted to her presence in the village and everyone works hard on keeping her safe and helping her to learn what she should and should not do.

She's learned to crawl rather well, making her way around the Shaman's tent with ease and knowing where the door is. When we go outside, she often demands to be let down, so she can do a bit of exploring on her own, but I only let her down for a few moments because... what good would it be to see the future Shaman crawling around in the dirt?

So, things have been going relatively calmly, simply raising Lain and helping her to learn the manners and ways of being human... We had a scare for a week during which she pretended that she was a cat, like the cats that live in my tent. It was rather silly, afterwards.

Soon, though, she will be a child, and we will be able to begin to teach her to be a Shaman.

Just a few weeks later, Lain has begun to speak and she is toddling around on her feet. This child really is rather fantastic, many have agreed, and everyone is happy to see her.

She's so bright, and very happy. Only short sentences and random words can be said now, but she's steadily increasing her speaking and understanding abilities. I cannot help but to be incredibly proud of her in everything that she does, and I know she will do even greater things as she gets older.

Alas, for the short entry. I must be going now. Lain is hungry, and it's almost time to work on teaching her more words.

More time has passed, and Lain has taken to running off at random times to go play with the other children. We're working on teaching her to write, and, as soon as she can, she will be writing in this journal with me.

She's an amazing child - I can't say this enough. Already, she can speak enough to maintain something of a conversation, and she's a delight to speak with! I've begun to teach her a few things about being a Shaman - her current favorite trick is starting a fire without any tools. She likes to light candles by blowing on them, though we already had to scold her once for doing it while no one was around.

Ah! I must be off. She's wreaking havoc with the candles, just as I was writing about them!

Lain is capable of writing now, months later, and she will be putting in her own words after my own journal entry. She really enjoys writing, it seems, writing on anything and everything - I have an adorable 'Lov you, Mommy' written next to my bed on the ten wall.

I still cannot believe how much she has grown, and it seems like it's so quickly, but it's already been almost a year with her, and she'll soon be considered a child rather than an infant. She's the first child I've raised, and she's not even my own, so this is all very new and very, very wonderful to me.

And now I shall leave things to Lain for a bit.

Mommy wants me to write in this book now so I will. Its strange really how things are... I dunno why we write in it. But Mommy says we must so I will. It should be fun. Gotta go now. Mommy wants to eat lunch.

Lain.

Lain's mostly done little scribblings on paper now, but she's getting very close to being writing almost as well as me - her mental prowress is stunning, but fantastic. We're all hoping she'll take her shamanic teachings as well as she's taken to reading and writing.

We tried to teach her math, and she'll get up into ten outloud, even though we've taught her higher than that. She doesn't like the numbers, she tells us, and she tries to avoid dealing with them as much as possible.

Lately, she's been telling me she wants to grow her hair long and pretty, like all of the other girls, and I think I will let her. She would just be gorgeous with long hair. But, it all depends on the word of my advisors.

I forgot to tell you of them, didn't I?

The advisors came along with Lain, when she arrived in my arms but a year ago, telling of how her mother had been killed at the hands of her father, and her father had been put to death for it. They told me that they would be staying, by request of her home village, to ensure that she was raised properly and perfectly. They rather annoy me, because they're always interfering with her natural growth processes - when she was learning to walk, they would either help her or try to make her go faster, further, longer than she could manage.

I really do hope they just leave soon.

Lain doesn't need them pestering her when she can understand what's going on.

It appears this log will be kept in months, because I simply can't seem to keep up! I get so distracted with how Lain is doing. She keeps growing, like a weed, and I can't stop teaching her because of how eager she is to learn!

The advisors have decided to allow her to keep her hair long - for now. They're so annoying ... but, thankfully, they'll be leaving soon. Apparently, they've been ordered to let her grow up under my care and my village's care, because that would be best for her to hone her abilities.

Speaking of which... she's gotten to the point in her abilities that, I think, she can glimpse spirits. Sometimes she'll turn her head to the side quickly, as though hoping to see what she's catching little hints and glimpses of. It's rather cute.

But, I should go now. She wants to read!
