For the past few days, my son has had very high fever.
When I say high, I mean 103+.
He had no other symptoms, just really high fever. He could drink and eat and had no difficulty swallowing. But that fever was really high and we didnt know what else to do, so I took him to the hospital. stare
I will tell you guys some tips before you waste your time/money in the emergancy room.
If you have a boy, (it only works on little boys, sorry!) then give him a cool/tipid bath. If bathing is not an option, get an ice pack and put it on his groin (not his ... other!! just above it and to the sides of his legs!!). This will bring his fever down (and this is exactly what they will do in the emergancy room stare stare ) because the blood vessels in his groin are very near to the skin and it cools them off, that cools off his blood, and that gets to flowing all over his little body thus cooling him off.
If you have a little girl (this also works on boys) tryin giving them iced pedia lite. DO NOT GIVE THEM FRUIT JUICE OR MILK OF ANY KIND!! Pedia lite/ pedia sure is the best thing to give them. It keeps them hydrated and they will need that with a high fever. High tempuratures and milk/ fruit juices DONT mix. Want to know why? Put a glass of milk/ fruit juice in your car for an hour, come back and look at it. That is what it is like in your kids stomach when they have fever. Eww. Just eww. mad P:
Try and give your little one fever reliever ONLY if they have a HIGH fever for a LONG time. I have been told by many doctors (and I am kinda studying to be one.. sweatdrop ) that fever is your body's way of fighting off disease. By stoping fever you are stoping your body from getting rid of it effectively. If they get up over 100 degrees give them meds. Babies tempuratures also change quickly and drastically. We took Nathan's temp and it was 99.8, took it again 5 minutes later 103.2.
Becareful with fever. Try to bring it down as soon as possible. High fever CAN damage baby in other ways. I had an uncle who was fine until he had a high fever. He hasnt been right (mentally) since then.
This will sound mean, but If your baby has a high fever and no other signs or symptoms AND is drinking or eating ( MUST BE DRINKING) then call your doctor before rushing to the hospital. Most often, If the baby is drinking and doesnt display any other symptoms, they will just chunk the kid in a cold bath and then tell you to take em home. That is exactly what happened to us.
Tempurature checking:
They have nifty little pacifier thermoniters now. They are okay, but often give off inaccurate readings. This is because of the friction caused by the baby sucking on the paci. Friction creates heat making the temp soar. It is possible to get a "fever" reading when the child isnt even hot just because of the friction caused by sucking on it.
Better ways to monitor temp: use a regular thermonitor under the arm close to the arm pit. Add a degree. It works better and isnt as unconfortable as the a**l thermoniter.
If you do use the a**l, subtract a degree for accurate reading.
Now, my son was eating and drinking (no difficulty swallowing) and didnt have any other symptoms when we took him and they told us to do that. So if your child is the same way, try those methods posted to relieve fever before taking him to the hospital. If that doesnt help, load up buddy.
IF your child cannot eat or drink (drinking is more important!! It is ok if they cannot eat, but they MUST drink!!) take them ASAP. There can be something seriously wrong.
As always, use your own judgement. If you feel like you need to take the child to be seen, take them by all means. This is just advice and tips given to me. I passed them on to you. This is NOT a diagnosis of any kind.
Hope it helps some one.
