Welp, every distro forum has to have a thread for this, so here's ours.
Please limit your posting of your favorite distro (just for the sake of it being your favorite) to this thread. Questions, of course, about any distro (favorite or not) are always welcome anywhere... Ima go first...
My favorite distro is: Gentoo I've been working with it: For 3 or 4 years I like it because: Gentoo is more than just a distrobution, it's a philosophy that just plain works. Their package management tool is quite frankly the best I've ever seen, their developers are some of the most talented people I've ever met (I know the kernel lead, and maintainer of the -hardened branch, as well as a ton of other devs), I love their design and layout of the system, the way things integrate properly, and the idea that a system is always current - the only versions they release are CDs, but a CD install from 2 years ago if properly maintained can be the exact same as a CD install I just did last week, and that means no massive upgrades when they release new versions. Things I wish they did better: Had a better way of dealing with masked packages, specifically, unmasking lots of deps at a time.
Any format will do, but I like that one becaues it shows how long you've had to get to know a distro - in my case, you can clearly see it isn't my "flavor of the week", but it also shows what, if anything, you *don't* like about the system. Some people for instance may not like a distro that's KDE-based, but like everything else about it. May be worth mentioning you wish they had better Gnome support, that way people who *refuse* to use KDE (like me) won't waste their time on it smile

My favorite distro is: Ubuntu I've been working with it: Roughly a year I like it because: Ubuntu just plain works. Stupidly simple to setup, it was by far the most painless distrobution I've yet worked with. Built off Debian's massive software support, Ubuntu brings a much updated codebase that using the apt package manager can be easily extended and updated. I feel comfortable handing an installation disc to a friend first stepping out into the Linux world, unafraid of them getting 'burned' by difficulty easing into the system. I'm also ready to recommend it to someone well versed in Linux, looking for a new distrobution to try. Using a Server install, and Ubuntu-Lite, a package that installs IceWM, I have a very fast(for a binary install) setup without working to set anything up. For those who still enjoy tweaking configuration scripts in order to create a seamless installation, Ubuntu isnt so hot, but for those who are tired of the work, and simply want an out of the box installation, Ubuntu is great. Things I wish they did better: Had better(read:any) support for root. I know its bad security practice, and I know that one day, virii will hit Linux, but darnit, I want my root! Its just easier to be the super user. Following the Ubuntu guides for enabling root access did work. Right until I got past the login screen and tried to do anything. Then the system just borked. CUPS support is a little strange, the browser interface doesnt work, which appears to be an offshoot of the previously elaborated upon no-root policy. Other than that, I suppose I just wish it used sources unstead of binaries wink

My Favorite Distro: Slax. i've been working with it: about 5 months. i like it because: it is a live-CD (But installable!) Distro that can run in as little as 64MB of RAM, and i can use it as a mobile workstation for when i go to someone's house. Slax comes in 5 versions. Standard edition--simple desktop version intended for everyday use. KDE used. KillBill edition--standard edition with Wine built-in. Server edition--you get the idea. Popcorn edition--stripped down version using XFCE. runs in 128MB RAM. Frodo edition--CLI version. 56MB in size. all versions are updated twice a month. .w. Wish they did better: the graphics drivers could be a little more extensive, as it doesn't go past 1024 x 768 Resolution @ 70Hz.

My Favorite Distro: Freespire
Worked With It For:1/2 week
Like It Because: So far it has proven very stable, but, after using Windows my entire life, just about every distro of Linux seems very stable. The CNR (Click-N-Run) program is really helpful since I have not managed to get the hang of installing/uninstalling software properly. It is also compatible with almost all of my hardware (just can't get the ol' ZIP drive to work).
I Wish It: Came with more games. Since I'm on dial-up (no high-speed available where I live), I need something to entertain me while I wait for downloads. But, I've downloaded enough games, now, to keep me happy.
Note: I have tried out the following distros in this order: Red Hat Linux (can't remember version), Mandrakelinux 9 & 10, Fedora Core 2 & 3, Mandriva Linux 2006, and, now, Freespire, all on the same machine. Freespire, so far, runs the best and is easist for me to use.

Freespire, so far, runs the best and is easist for me to use. Well, I've had some changes of mind with Linux distros. Freespire, while it worked very well with my machine, wasn't quite good enough. I've gone back to Mandriva Linux 2006 Free. I'd have to say that it's my favorite. I seem to keep going back to Mandriva since I first tried Mandrakelinux 10 back in high school. I'm quite content with Mandriva '06. It's stable, comes with tons of features, and is very easy for me (an ex- Windows user) to use. I should be getting a broadband 'Net connection up at my house soon, so I will be upgrading to Mandriva Linux 2007 Free. It looks quite promising.

favorite distro: Ubuntu
i've been using it for: 1.75 years
i like it because: my computer doesn't die xd the windows butterfly is the anti-insert religious figure here- , tux isn't
i wish it: would properly update gnunet, came with a print version of every man file.....in binary.
note: i say my compy hasn't died, that was not entirely true; my old computer (an old hp vectra...don't ask), which was running ubuntu, also had a ****load of experimental, beta release stuff on it. when i "sudo apt-get update apt-get upgrade-ed" it, it killed the GUI, i could only get at my stuff via command line...which sucked, royaly. scream gonk emo
(hmm...still need to get the files off that hard drive...)

My favorite distro is: Knoppix I've been working with it: For 2 years I like it because: Knoppix is portable, installable, and I just created a boot floppy so it can run off my flash drive. Its a great way to convert people, even if I just burn them a CD.
Things I wish they did better: More programs. Although I know I can just add them.
