This is a bit of a broad topic. There's alot of stuff I can recomend to all kinds of people. I work in a anime/comics specialty store, so I know dozens of good anime/manga. If someone posts a genre that they like or gives me a few manga/anime that they like, then I can recomend lots of things.

My Reccomendations:

Anime

Narutaru Ok... just because this aired on "Kid's Station" does NOT make it a children's anime. It's basically a sick twisted and very interesting anime about society with a large number of very "messed-up" characters with "interesting" viewpoints. The anime is very incomplete though as it only covers about half the manga which is being released(apparently with censorship) by *iforgotnameofpublisher* and the print quality didn't look especially great when i flipped through whatever volume of this that the store had, though it still looked pretty good ( i still special ordered volume 1)

Tsukihime All in all, i loved the plot of this anime. Parts of the story seem rushed though- like they needed to cut the story short because of the filler

Vampire Miyu OAV Dark, from 1988 but surprisingly not bad. About a pyschic named Himiko who tries to find out Miyu's origins. Probably my favorite anime.

Vampire Princess Miyu TV Think of a typical episodic, monster of the day, magical girl show like sailor moon. Then make it dark and make the episodes have unhappy rather than happy endings. Some episodes are much better than others...

She and her Cat I hate the US dvd release of this. THe fansub I have is MUCH better (subtitles prettier and while they say basically the same thing as the official release, the wording in my fansub flows better) anyway it's a short 5 minute clip by makoto shinkai and idk... i like it alot... and hoshi no koe is even better ^_^

Manga

Planet Ladder I'm dying to find out what happens in the last volume, and if Kaguya can save all the worlds or which she lets be destroyed

Gunslinger Girl This series is twisted and a bit wrong. I liked the anime, but the manga's even better I think. It's very well done i think.

X-day Interesting story. Was never actually about blowing up the school. ....and the cow-story at the end of the second book... is GENIUS!

Figure 17 short (2 books) but there's quite a bit of character development. Cute-ish story with a nice happy message. ^_^

Vampire Miyu/New Vampire Miyu manga: personally, the first volume of regular vampire miyu is my favorite... the books were written vampire miyu #1 -> new series -> volume 2+ of "regular series" and the artwork quality changes and such. a little different than the animations... new vpm is it's own self contained story altogether ^^;

A lot of what I was going to suggest for anime and manga have already been suggested. ^^;; There are two though that really deserve a few words though.

Berserk: Probably the best series I've ever seen. EXTREMELY bloody and violent though. My only gripe with it was the ending... it was very bizarre. Most people don't like it in the least. Definitely worth the watch though if you can stomach it. It has some great characters and storylines. The manga's supposed to be amazing, but I've never had the chance to pick it up.

Battle Royale: This manga series is beyond amazing. Oo It is the most gorey thing you can imagine. And graphic in... sexual acts. oO But don't let that discourage you. The story is so emotional, and keeps you hooked. It also makes you think a lot about society. And it's just, wow.

Yah, the 8th book was excpetionally.... graphic in that aspect. Oo;; And I thought the little thing in the end of the third was bad. x_O;;;; I doubt I'll ever be able to wipe some of those pictures from my mind...
