has anyone here tried oliv strings by pirastro? im curious because i want to know if they are worth the 80 dollars they now cost.

no, I use evah pizarro (or something like that). They are worth 20 EURO'S each, but they are very good.

I wouldn't suggest spending that much on strings, no matter if they are worth it, until you are pursuing the violin as a career and/or on a HIGHLY competitive level. Competitive as in, auditioning for positions against Hilary Han. (Well, perhaps not. However, you get the idea.) The difference in sound quality is there, but it really does not matter as much as it seems, especially on human levels. xd It starts to matter once you are being lent Stradavari to play recordings. Then they are not a drain on your finances, and the increments of quality begin to be crucial. Until then I would say it's just a waste of money.

Of course, if you just have to play at informal places, you don't really need them, because then they only listen to the way you're playing. But if you're going to play in a concert where the people want to hear something beautiful, it's nice to have them. They really make difference!

Not as an amatuer, is all I am saying. And, as a young person, you are an amateur. If you have that kind of money, you can choose what to spend it on. However, I wouldn't recommend it; even for MENC or other festivals, Dominant are as expensive as I would go.
And of course, keep in mind that your skill matters more. A great violinist needs a great violin, but that great violinist could still draw beautiful music from a bad violin, bad strings, bad bow.

I can make sounds no-one can on my violin, but neither can I on another violin.
