I heard of a theory ( I don't know if it's true.) That the expancion of the universe will one day end and everything will shrink back together and cause "A Big Crunch"
arrow I was just wondering if this was true.
arrow And if there was some kind of a projected timeline for it.

http://www.exitmundi.nl/bigcrunch.htmIt's a theory, so it might happen, but we can't say that it's going to happen. Anyway, give it 20 trillion years, give or take a few. Pretty freaky stuff, if the universe does crunch it's believed that everything will work the other way around, time will reverse, more complex elements will be more common, we'll have anti-gravity, so many things that it's hard to imagine. If that really happens, who knows. There's also the big expansion, where the universe expands until some objects will be moving away faster than the speed of light, and forever be lost to us, perhaps even leaving any race unfortunate enough to be alive at the time in a world enshrouded in darkness. The big rip, where the universe expands to the point where it simply tears apart, as well as all of it's occupants. And my favorite, the big crumble, where universal constants necessary for the current state of our universe are tweaked, causing all sorts of havoc including, as given away by the name, everything falling apart among other thigns. Worst part is there's evidence of the constants changing, in 2001 researchers noted that the structure constant was getting bigger. But by the time it happens, we'll not only big dead, but our remains will most likely be absorbed into the earth itself, which will probably be part of a cloud of gas or something along those lines after the sun went nova on us.

I've heard about it before, but all I've heard about in science class was the outlines of it and how 20 trillion years from now, the universe will implode.

Current models show that the expansion is speeding up. Thus the big crunch isn't likely. Instead, it's more likely we'll get the Big Rip.

There IS such a theory referred to as the "Big Crunch". In actuality, there is another hypothesis that the universe will erupt in a Big Bang after this event and later crush itself again in a "Crunch", and then repeat this cycle. Thus, in such, the universe would eternally be self-destructing and generating over and over.

Yes, but will it just continue on forever? There's always an end to something, yet that something is far beyond most peoples imaginations.
BTW, I'm new here. Howdy ^^

I've heard of this theory, but I consider it unlikely. Now it is believed that the universe is expanding at an accelerated rate. Since the universe is thought to be speeding up, the probability that it will maintain a gravitational influence to create the crunch is declining.

The sun isn't going to go nova on us, it's more likely to turn into a white dwarf. Nova's are from stars that are high mass, like 8 or more times the mass of our sun

Well according to the 'experts' when it goes to a red giant it will expand to the earths orbit so bye-bye earth.

solnya Which is worse? Earth being destroyed by a black hole or the sun? The sun. Not only is extremely improbable that a black hole will come close enough to the Earth to distory it, but... I can't imagine what that would be like... depends on how big the black hole is.
