They were giving it two themes. It kind of has a story of its own in the music video; about a girl and guy in a relationship and what happens when he goes to war and s**t like that. In my point of view, the music video was kind of a way for people to relate to the song in a different meaning of it. It kind of brings more of the mood the song is trying to show. Then, the song itself, is also seen about his dad dying.
So basically it has two official meanings. exactly.
but the song is basically about loss. So the video works.
