In otherwords no where near the labyrinth, city or castle itself. You're in reality...
PostPosted: Sun Jun 25, 2006 10:10 pm

Aven walked through the corridors at a slow pace. Through a set of earphones My Chemical Romance was blaring Helena. Her hair was tied back in a tight knot and her dark rimmed eyeglasses gleamed under the buzzing lights effective hiding her brown eyes. She pushed through a set of double doors into a lab, one of many she called her own within the University's campus. Someone was already making themselved at home as it were by tinkering with the glass tubes. It was Bianca Prez, her "new" assistant...or so her memo that morning had said.

"Hello, I suppose you're here for..."

"Hey there's no one allowed beyond those doors," the assistant informed her in a holier than thou tone.

"*ahem* Yes well Miss Prez, I am professor Joules," she retorted a bit annoyed that yet another assistant had mistaken her for a student, "and I would appreciate it if you'd not handle these chemicals without gloves."

With that she pushed through the red faced woman and into her office. Today was going to be a productive one, providing Bianca could keep up.

In Bianca's defense she was quite a capable chemist, if not a bit snobby. Aven would have been able to support her company if not for the catastrophic turn of events. It all began with a call at around 5 pm. Bianca's child was out of Day Care and needed to be picked up. The assistant stuttered a reply as she looked warily up at Aven. Said girl looked up from her electron microscope and returned her stare.

"Would it be much trouble, Professor...if my child stayed a few hours...in the lab...?"

Half an hour later a loud five year old had invaded Aven's sacred lab. Her eye twitched as the boy asked what every flask was. She couldn't concentrate. Finally after watching the college professor wince for the umpteenth time, the lab assistant finally handed the noisy child a coloring book and ushered him into the lobby.

Aven sighed in relief as peace and quiet finally reigned once more. Time passed quite pleasantly as the bubbling mixtures shifted between hue and consistency. She dibbled a small sample of liquid into a petri dish and set the timer. When directly from behind the door leading to her office there came a horrible crash. Aven's eyes widened.

"What in the world!" she hurried towards her sanctuary vowing a painful death for whoever had disturbed it. The damage that met her eyes was worse than she could ever imagine. The shelves that housed her most precious works of fiction had cracked in half, eaten away by sulphuric acid. She gaped in horror as a thick heavy leather bound book lay upon the counter all but eaten away.

She slowly walked towards the book. The bright guilded script lay dissolving in a puddle of corrosive acid. She hadn't even begun to read it properly. It was like watching your new kitten die.

"Oh Jason!" Bianca gasped grabbing the little boy by the shoulders and pulling him close.

"I'm sorry..."

Aven wasn't listening, she was staring at the half eaten book. All she could think about was the pity, the shame and the loss of it all. Her treasures destroyed.

"He said he was sorry," Bianca said in a whimper-like tone.

Aven turned to stare blankly at her assistant's child. "I wish the goblins would come and take you away right now," she said with a calm tone that bespoke all her anger.

The lights flickered on and off before closing. Not a sound was made as Aven was captured and brought into the labyrinth instead of the child. When light came into view, Aven would discover she was no longer in her labs.

Before her stood a young lady who appeared to be seventeen in age. Long tresses of obsidian coloring cascaded to grace her slender waist. Silver eyes glistened as she watched Aven.

"Welcome. My master has heard you speak the sacred words...."

Her voice was soft like black velvet, having it's own hpynotic spell...

Aven was trying not to begin hyperventilating. It could be fixed. It could all be fixed. She'd scour Amazon and Ebay until she found her books again and deduct the money from Bianca's salary. Yes, that's exactly what she'd have to do. Suddenly the world went dark and she was no longer in her lab. She blinked several times before the fact clicked in. There was a girl with an odd voice and strange eyes.

"Welcome. My master has heard you speak the sacred words..."

Her watch then began bleeping. Aven's mind quickly forgot her mourning and confusion as it eased into routine. The time was up she had to check the petri dishes or else the solution would be spoiled.

"Yes, very interesting, now if you'll point me to the door I have to check on my culture's progress," she said absently as she pulled a mini-notebook from her lab coat and began making preliminary notes.

"I'm sorry... But that is something you have to take up with my master. He's the one who brought you here."

A small breeze blew by, teasing hair and tugging at clothing. Sky pushed back the tendrils that blew in front of her eyes.

"Only he can let you go...if he desires..."

For the first time she really looked at the girl. She looked like she was part of the Drama Club or something. Weren't they in the bottom floor in the building of one of her labs? She must have fallen through the floor, the acid must have eaten through the floor joists.

"Bianca is so fired," the 21 year-old mumbled to herself before looking at the strange girl directly in the face. Aven was beginning to get a little ticked off, and although she never pulled rank on anyone this looked like the perfect time for it. "Ok listen, you little diva I'm in the middle of a very important experiment. I know you think it's cute and you'll be rich and famous some day if you keep it up, but right now you're interfering with issues that are of actual importance, so just tell me the way to the corridor or I'll have Admissions on you so fast your career will be over before it begins."

"Diva?" she raised a brow. "I assure you there is no way out except through Jareth himself."

She turned half way around, half tempted to just leave. All she was told to do was greet her. She didn't have to do anything else. She turned her gaze in the direction of the castle, half expecting the Goblin King himself to appear. She didn't really care to deal with someone who was going to jump on her for reasons that were not her fault.

"Don't believe me? Try solving this place on your own..."

Aven narrowed her eyes until they attained a bored sort of droop. She shoved her fists into the lower pockets of her lab coat and fingered the tiny test-tubes of ether within them.

Just a clear shot, right between the eyes. That is all I need, just one shot. The young professor pushed those thoughts out of her mind knowing that attacking anyone on campus was bound to affect her economic endowments. Every scientist knew, you couldn't make breakthroughs without funding.

Besides Ether doesn't grow on trees, she's hardly worth the price of it or the tubes. Mustering every bit of patience she could, Aven addressed the girl.

"Ok...lets take it from the top," she said slowly so any artsy student would be able to understand her, "WHAT are you talking about?"

Skyling practically stared at her. "You don't know? You spoke the sacred words, 'I wish the goblins would come and take you away right now,' and you don't know that you're in the labyrinth?"

She shook her head. She sometimes wondered about some of the women her master was constantly bringing into the kingdom. While Sky had her own powers, she certainly didn't like the consequneces she'd have taken for her actions. So she merely kept her hands at her sides.

"You are inside the Labyrinth. The only way out is through Jareth, the Goblin King. That is if he lets you out...."
PostPosted: Sun Jun 25, 2006 11:28 pm

Yes, the slow talking always did the trick. She pondered the stranger's words. Aven was a Bio Chemist, but she was not ignorant to the works of fantasy. More than half of the books now lying in a puddle of acid had some sort of mythological creature in it.

"No I have no idea what the labyrinth is," she said in a tone dripping with sarcasm, "Unless...it's the one where I have 13 hours to solve it, I have to get to the castle by then or else the little brat who I wished here becomes a goblin, oh and once meet up with Jareth I have to stall for time before enouncing the fact that he holds no power over me thus proving some cosmic point about how you're your own person and can bend the universe if you set your mind to it. If it's that Labyrith then you got yourself a faulty script because the child is supposed to be taken, not the wisher."

Aven crossed her arms and looked out at the "set". Despite the promising view, she was bored and her pose declared it.

"Why is it I always get the defective fairy tales?" she sighed to herself.

"Rules have changed. It is that very labyrinth you just described only it was you who was taken and not the child. "

She shook her head. "Any more answers to your questions will have to come from him."

She started to walk away as she was getting irritated and seemed to want to risk Hoggle's temper then someone who was human...

"What the hell?" the girl exclaimed, "Fine! Where is 'Jareth' then," she asked her hands forming visual quotation marks with her fingers.

Aven's watch then bleeped for the second time and she frowned. This was taking up precious time and her already thin patience was evaporating. Still, she had to play along, it was her only hope of ever reaching her lab in time.

"Why, dear god why? How are geniouses supposed to discover great things when stupid people keep getting in the way?" she muttered to herself.

"You're a scientist. You figure it out."

Rayn was done. She grew very quiet. Where was he? Why was it always her that got sent out on these errands? Sky stretched out, poping stiff muscles and relaxing.

"I don't appreciate your tone," she said calmly as her fingers locked on a vial and shook it into activation.

Aven tossed a small sealed glass tube the size of her pinky towards Sky's retreating back in what appeared to be a clumsy motion but was actually higly calculated. The glass shattered by the girl's foot before erupting in a loud explosion and leaving a small crater in it's wake.

"Oh now I remember! Nitroglycerin in the left pocket, ether in the right," the professor grinned impishly amused beyond belief, "hahaha, good thing I missed that time, right?"

She stepped back from the explosion, frowning. She turned around, walked back to her and spoke in a soft whisper. "You'd be wise to curb your own tone as you are the one who is throwing it about...not I. I didn't start anything so I'd appreciate it if you didn't attack me."

She pulled her hair back, tieing it into a ponytail before turning again. She merely stood there but the ground began to move of its own accord, a reaction to Sky's growing irritation.
