Do any of you attend a local support group? If so, what is its focus? Does it help you?

I used to go to the "NAMI Greater Seattle Schizophrenia Consumer & Family SG." I can't go anymore because the place they meet at is far enough away so that I can't get there, and at an inconvenient time. But when I was able to go (before my parents moved away and couldn't give me rides anymore) I found it very helpful! It was great to be around people who truly understood, and had practical advice to give. I highly recommend Support Groups, especially for those of us who have tried and strongly dislike therapy from Psychologists, Psychiatrists and therapists.

If you live in the U.S. and want to find a Support Group, click here to find your local NAMI chapter so that you can contact them and find a Support Group near you!

I might be volunteering with the local Autism Society of America chapter, but I don't usually attend their meetings.

Hey, it's cool that you're volunteering. A lot of Support Groups can't get off the ground because there aren't enough volunteers helping out with the little stuff. I see a lot of groups fail because the poor mentally ill people trying to do everything at once can't handle the pressure!

Where I live we have a partial hospitalization program, which is just a 6 hour group therapy thing. I've been there for over a year now. It does help. It makes me less anxious and now that I have a part time job, I really need their support. I'm hoping I may find out that I only need occasional therapy sessions with a therapist instead of being there twice a week.
