Maid Marian is the female companion to the legendary figure Robin Hood.

The earliest Medieval Robin Hood stories gave him no female companion. The Robin Hood character at this time was rather brutish woodsman and a female companion would have been out of place.

Maid Marian was originally a character in May Games festivities (held during May and early June, most commonly around Whitsun) and is sometimes associated with the Queen or Lady of May of May Day. It has been suggested that she became associated with Robin Hood in this context, as Robin Hood became a central figure in May Day, associated as it was with the forest and archery.

Marian is likely derived from the French tradition of a shepherdess named Marion and her shepherd lover Robin (not Robin Hood). The best known example of this tradition is Adam de la Halle's Le Jeu de Robin et Marion, circa 1283.

In narrative terms, Maid Marian was first attached to Robin Hood in the late sixteenth century as Robin was gentrified and given a virginal maid to pine after. Her biography and character have been highly variable over the centuries, being sometimes portrayed as a pagan or Saxon and other times as a high born Norman. (Marian's role was not entirely virginal in the early days. In 1592, Thomas Nashe described the Marian of the later May Games as being played by a male actor named Martin, and there are hints in the play of Robin Hood and the Friar that the female character in these plays had become a lewd parody.)

Maid Marian's character evolved, becoming conflated with the Goddess Diana as she became portrayed as a skilled huntress that fought alongside Robin. In the Victorian Era she reverted to her previous role as the dainty maid. With the rise of modern feminism in the 20th century, the character has often been depicted as an adventurer again, sometimes as a crack archer herself. In modern times, a common ending for Robin Hood stories became that he married Maid Marian and left the woods for a civilized aristocratic life. See also Maid Marian and Her Merry Men for a modern role reversal.

Hmmm... interesting theories. But they all seem conflicting. Then again, most legends change over time to reflect current social trends. I wonder what the truth, the real truth, about the Maid Marian is?

Maid Marian
(compliments this website)

Real Name: The Lady Marian Fitzwalter (Fitzwalter/Fitzwater is the most common name in the tales. She is Marion of Leaford in Robin of Sherwood and Marian DuBois in Prince of Thieves)

Identity/Class: Normal human

Occupation: Outlaw

Affiliations: Robin Hood and his "Merrie Men" (including, but not limited to Little John, Will Scarlet, Friar Tuck, Much the Miller's Son, Allan a Dale)

Enemies: Sheriff of Nottingham, Guy of Guisborne, Abbot of St. Mary's - York, Bishop of Hereford, Prince John, Isembart de Baleme, Simon de Belleme.

Known Relatives: Richard at the Lee (a.k.a. Richard of Leaford, father - sometimes, such as in the 1890's play and the Robin of Sherwood TV series), King Richard and Prince John (distant cousins according to Prince of Thieves), Robin Hood (husband), several possible children (there are tons of children of Robin Hood stories).

Aliases: Clorinda, Queen of the Shepherds (Robin's wife from a ballad and some 1700s musicals, Roger Lancelyn Green makes this an alias of Marian in his popular children's novel), Matilda (Marian's real name in the 1590's plays, an alias in other stories), the Forestwife.

Base of Operations: Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire; Nottingham; Barnsdale, Yorkshire; Loxley; Blidworth and Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire (local tradition, Edwinstowe is the supposed site of her marriage to Robin and just a short walk from the remains of Sherwood Forest), Arlingford (Marian's home in Thomas Love Peacock's novella and various books following this tradition).

First Appearance: c.1200 -1400 A.D. (same as Robin)

Powers/Abilities: Some tales make her a skilled fighter, as well as being a match for the Merry Men in wilderness survival.

History: Possibly an import from a French storytelling tradition and the English May Games, Marian is a later addition to the Robin Hood legend.

In the ballad, Robin Hood and Maid Marian, she is the childhood sweetheart of Robin. Upon hearing of Robin being outlawed, Marian dressed herself as a page boy and headed to Sherwood Forest. She encountered Robin, who was also in disguise, and neither recognized the other. They fought for over an hour, to a standstill. When Robin invited this disguised stranger to join the Merry Men, they realized their true identities. Robin and Marian were married a short time later.

Some tales have Robin being outlawed during his marriage ceremony to Lady Matilda/Marian Fitzwater. He pledged not to marry her until his honour was restored.

In other legends, Maid Marian is either a royal ward or a ward of the Sheriff of Nottingham and his brother, the Abbot of St. Mary's.

Sometimes Marian is an active member of the band - a skilled archer and fighter. Other times, her true affiliations remain hidden and Marian stays in Nottingham, spying on the sheriff's plans.

Some stories have Marian dying before Robin, either from a disease or being killed in battle. In other tales, she outlives Robin and retires to a nunnery. There have been several stories about the various children of Robin and Marian.
In Theresa Tomlinson's young adult novels, young Mary de Holt becomes Marian, the latest in a long line of Forestwifes. As the Forestwife, this Marian runs a band of women who help those in need.

Comments: Thanks to Allen Wright for providing information for this page. Check out his Robin Hood website.

CLARIFICATIONS: None.

Name: Faewynd
Nicknames: Fae
Gender: Female
Race: Faerie
Nationality: Ninth Tribe
Age: Unknown
Hair: Red
Eyes: Mulberry
Skin: Pale
Height: Short
Weight: Not a lot
Occupation: Owns and runs a large inn-slash-tavern
Favorite Color: White
Personality: Fae is bubbly, happy and an all around sweet girl. She often gets overwhelmed and yells, but since she's so tiny it's practically impossible for her to be intimidating. In fact, she's about as dangerous as a toothless squirrel. She does tend to spiral sometimes, withdrawing deep into herself and staying there for unknown periods of time. She also has a history of self-destructive behavior. This can all be attributed to her past, virtually all things that happened before she washed up on the shores of Gaia are not to be discussed in detail. Or at all.
Sexuality: As far as anyone can tell, Fae doesn't get physically or romantically involved with anyone, so her sexuality is unknown.
Love Interest: None
Marital Status: Single
Children: Several, all adopted.
Interests: Fae is a scholar, she loves collecting old and out of print books from various worlds. She also practices arcane magic, loves gardening and is a gourmet chef.
Dislikes: Fae gets very grumpy at people who can't take a hint and people who waste things.
Style: N/A
History: Fae refuses to divulge her past to anyone. Long story made simple, she was falsely accused of murdering her sisters. As punishment her people mutilated her and stuck her in a boat, shoving her off to sea to die. Instead, she washed up on the shores of Gaia. And now, as the only remaining member of the ninth tribe, her people need her to save them from their gods and Fae just doesn't seem interested.

Links to all formal RP's will be located in this post with a brief description for easy access. Fae finds that she is vile and scatterbrained and therefore must put links everywhere or risk losing her mind.

Recieval RP: In which Faewynd takes her son Hassan to the bank and discovers a relative she never knew she had (and who continues to remain anonymous) left her an heirloom which will become a little girl. Faewynd names the bronze cross Sorcha and takes her home, much to Hassan's delight at the prospect of having a little sister.

Research RP : In which Faewynd discovers the identity of her family legacy and Despairs, seeing as how maid Marian is not even remotely likely to be easier to raise than her son. And two hellions is always worse than one.

Event RP: In which a possible teenage personality is explored as Sorcha is RP'ed as a highschooler for Minyain's concept contest.
