I have far too many books for my own good. I had a great idea last summer: I'll build myself a bookshelf. I never did, but i'm determined to this summer. I have a duffle bag in the garage full of old books that I got for 5 cents each at the library sale. I also have books stacked on the floor in my room. I already have the polyurithane and the wood glue. I just need screws, my dad's drill and scredriver and chisels and paint brushes and some wood (probably maple, pine or poplar) and a hammer and nails and some sandpaper and a plane and brackets for the shelves.
I have some shopping to do if I'm to finish this project.

Good luck. I always wanted to learn to build things out of wood, but I never did. Sounds like you need a lot of equipment, though.

I like building things too. Anything handmade is always better than store-bought, if only for the feeling of "wow, I actually did this all myself!"

Thanks. That's whyI want to build it myself. I hope I can actually get the stuff though. I dont' even know if I can afford it. My dad might have some screws and sandpaper I can use. I really just need to get the wood.

Cool. Well, you should post a picture of your creation when you're done!

you only need sand paper if you want it to be nice and smooth. Shouldnt need a chisel unless you want to scult things into it. For books gets some 1/12 and use those as both shelves and spacers and sides. it works really well like that.

Yeah, and it's just not practicle to ship a newly built piece of furnature halfway accross the country when I could just build it after travelling halfway accross the country.

Why would I want your bookcase? I already got one (a perfectly good one mind you), and besides, bookcases are non-migratory!

Maybe it's a hybrid? You know... half of each kind? How am I supposed to know about your bookcase anyway? It's yours. You should know the answer to that, Dennis.
