Oh, sexism is definately alive and kicking. It's also discrimination (like, you know--in the workplace...). But yeah--I'll believe it's dead when I stop hearing things about "the women's place is in the kitchen" and all that bullshit...

"Sexism is dead" is just something people say when they're accused of being sexist. I've experienced it a lot in ED.
Overt sexism is lessening in the United States, in practice. In people's minds, however, and in their jokes, it's still alive and well. I know so many people who tell "woman" jokes and "woman driver" jokes, and they're really not funny. If you say something, they accuse you of being "too politically correct," which is ridiculous. Offensive jokes are meant to be offensive, and anybody telling one knows that. Humor is not exempt from decency.

I would pretty much say the exact same thing. I don't even get the "woman driver" jokes because women are less likely to get into accidents than men - that's why women pay less for car insurance. Pisses me off so much when people tell jokes like that. And then I'm being "oversensitive" for not thinking "jokes" involving rape / racism / sexism / other idiocy are "funny".

Sexism is definatly not dead. In the US it's decreased quite a bit, but it's still there. You see it alot more in other places though, like when my aunt went to Isreal the place for the men to pray was huge and the women all were crammed into this tiny area.

Sexism is nowhere near being dead. I experience it on a regular basis... for instance, on July Fourth my cousin made the comment that "Women are made to be beaten... hahaha I'm just kidding." Yeah, right. >< It's really frustrating...

Elehayym ...on July Fourth my cousin made the comment that "Women are made to be beaten... That's sick--it's the same kind of un-funny joke that people who tell jokes about rape, etc. think are hilarious. It's not funny, and it's wrong. And people shouldn't be frowned upon for being "tight-asses" or "too PC" just because they recognize their right to get offended. It's like Carlos Mencia jokes--I don't have a stick up my a** just 'cos I don't think that his racist/sexist generalizations are funny.

Get a job in a predominately male occupation. You'll see a lot of sexism.
The glass ceiling, sticky floor, and glass escalator are still the biggest forms of sexism in the USA.
It might be more quiet... but it's so still there.

Or for me I'll be getting a job in an occupation dominated by women. Why do women get the fun of being the teachers when it should fall on both genders? In any event, they need to pay teachers more for public K-12 schools.

Here is a nice link for you all to read. Of course by nice I mean terrible, sickening, and enough to make you stab a mod for not deleting it hours ago - ie before it reached page sixty five...
