The floppy drive is the major bottleneck on that system.
I don't know of any modern distros that will install from a floppy, however, older versions of Red Hat work well that way.
There's several distros that fit on a floppy such as DSL or LRP. But I don't know any of them that have X11 and do VGA.
My personal suggestion is to go with a copy of Red Hat 5.1 or so (Manhattin I think) or possibly 5.2 (I forget if there was a 5.2). It should still be available via Red Hat's FTP server, and do what you requested, as well as provide for bootable floppy media. I know linux loves old hardware, but your biggest challenge is going to be getting linux onto that hardware :-/

I'd suggest Xubuntu, but even that might not support such old hardware.

[N0M4D] I'd suggest Xubuntu, but even that might not support such old hardware. Nope. Damn Small Linux would run on it, But it would hit Virtual Memory pretty fast. but then again, that floppy drive is a pretty slim bottleneck. >_<

Yeah... so that's, what, a 16 bit system? I can't think of anything that runs on 16 bit systems. Menuet doesn't even run on a 16 bit system.

*sigh*
A 486 is a 32-bit system.
rolleyes
Slackware and DSL are about your only options. Most everyone else is now building their binaries involving some measure of instructions that a 486 has no idea what to do with and will just panic when it sees them.
