A lot of people argue over pornography, whether it is degrading to women, degrading to men, a sin to make or watch, all that. I've read published arguments on many sides, but I can't find anything I really agree with. I was wondering what you all thought about it.
Now, the older arguments usually just cover pictures and videos of sexual acts, but with the internet, we all have very easy access to anything from written erotica, drawn hentai, computer graphics, even ASCII pictures - that one was weird. So, feel free to comment on any kind of media used to sexually arouse people.

I personally find all pronography pointless and a waste of time as well as icky but I forced myself to watch a few pornos on television to see exactly what's wrong with them. Aside from the horrible writing and acting I really don't see anything too bad or degrading about mainstream porn. However, I've come across some pretty heinous things on the internet where women are truely degraded. There's also Japanese porn which is really screwed up. My conclusion? Don't go into porn and avoid it all costs.

The degradation comes in from how women are objectified in most porn and how they are treated off film, by the directors and the people paying them. OMG! RADICAL FEMINISM! There's more in the Online Library, if you're interested in Dworkin. This is only one view on the subject.

I have mixed feelings on porn.
The majority of it is made for men by men and the women are always degraded, objectified, or treated roughly in it. I think it could really ******** peoples' ideas about what women like and what women want.
Then again, there is some porn made by women for women. I am gay and enjoy lesbian porn, if any. And I've seen a FEW pretty good movies.

Ugh... I just don't find anything good about it. I think that it's a lose-lose situation because everyone involved ends up being objectified. In standard hetero porn, the woman is just a performer on the recieving end of the deal--not really benefiting at all. Then there's the male, who ends up, yes, being pleasured, but is just a c**k with legs. Let's be honest--most of the men in porn are mediocre looking, if not worse. It doesn't matter if the guy's fat, obnoxious, hairy, whatever--as long as he has a huge c**k he's a star and gets to ******** all these women that look the same (the general big bust, little waist, shaven p***y, etc. look that pretty much all women in the porno industry are forced to have). I just don't think it's good for anyone. *shrugs* I mean, I'm not going to go out and start a petition or ban on it, but I choose not to view it, though I know there are a lot of people that do.

I think, like most, I've got mixed feelings on porn. See, I don't think anything's wrong the idea of pornography. It's just acting (as bad as it maybe) and people can do with their bodies as they wish. I also think that it can be degrading to both men and women, of any sexual orientation. And this leads to my real problem with porn. My real issue is the masses of people who might end up believing that porn is equals real life. That just because those women in the porn are loving the beat down, that all women love a beat down. If people would separate fantasy from reality, then all would be fine.
Now personally I watch porn but mostly I read erotica. I find it enjoyable. Well written erotica is sexy and entertaining. What's not to love?
Unfortunately most porn. Porn geared towards men is usually unappealing and/or hilarious. Even gay porn makes me twitch and I like gay porn. When we were younger, my sister and I would sit around with the porn channel on mute laughing at the scenes. But porn/erotic by women can be very sexy. So yeah, porn, like most things can be fun if handled correctly.
Man, I hope I make sense. It’s really late right now. ^^;;;

I personally have never watched porn. The idea of watching other people having sex rather disgusts me, so I don't watch it.
I don't really see a problem with other people watching it. If that's your thing... As long as the actors/models are treated with respect and are not working in an abusive atmosphere, then there really isn' anything wrong with it.

As an adendum on to what I previously said, the main argument for porn is freedom of speech, right? But if people are harmed in any way during the process, then it would no longer be protected.
Example: Women (or men) being forced to have sex for the camera, or forced to have sex with an animal, or forced to do anything, really, is simply not freedom of speech. I am rather lost when it comes to the porn underworld. I don't know if porn is a higher form of prostitution, if pimps force their subjects to participate in it, or anything else, but a woman hanging from a tree by needles in her back is not freedom of speech.
