So, my MP3 battery is not holding a charge since I last added a CD or two. It only has about 226 songs on it, and I believe the box says it can hold around 2,500... My mum said we'll take it in and try and change batteries, but who knows when that'll be, and I hate having to constantly charge it (after every other use). So I was curious: Would it hurt (erase) the memory to take the battery off when it's not in use? Because I'm guessing it's the number of songs or something that's sucking out it's life, and I never use it for more than a couple hours at a time on a rare occasion. I also have more music that I want to add to it.

Alright, Play it until its completely drained, then charge it. It will retain the charge longer, I have to do the same thing with my phone... I also find it charges faster as well.

I did kill it the second last time I used it. After only half an hour of use it's lost a battery line, already. You see, it had worked perfectly wonderfully well before I added more music to it after getting home.

It may say that it can hold a certain number, but some memory might have come loose, you might be able to hear it if you shake it, but you might not.

I'm still working on getting around to deleting some songs... Only so I can add another few CDs... Because I have at least three CDs I want to add, and maybe some other songs from various CDs as well. And I've only ever dropped it once, shortly after I got it, onto the carpet.

sounds like there could be a problem with the battery, what kind of player is it? some devices do have smart batterys like ash was talking about but ive never had one of these said batterys but i know their out there. figure out what kinda battery it is, ill guess its lithium ion (may sai Li-Ion) if its lithium ion they like to be charged alot smart or not, dont let these run down to dead as its bad for them. if the battery is nickel-cadmium (may say Ni-cad) then always run the battery to dead before charging it, these batterys love to die and be recharged, they last alot longer this way. also make sure you leave it on the charger for a while, sometimes they claim a quick charge time but it can take longer than that regardless. if none of this helps then yes chances are you got a dud battery and should replace it before the warranty runs out. also you can remove the battery without losing any of your songs, mp3 players use a type of solid state memory called flash memory, this does not need power to keep the data, think of it as a hard disk in a computer. some mp3 players also use harddrives like the ipods, the cheaper ones are more fragile because a hard drive has moving parts and if you have a cheap harddrive one you may have damaged the harddrive and its taking more power to keep it running (not really sure about this, but its a guess) just try out what i said and see if it helps

My MP3 player would be a Creative Zen Micro.
But it's getting worse. I charged it up Friday night last week, so I could use it Saturday... It got about 45 minutes of use, hasn't been used since... Except on Wednesday night to check how much life it had, which would mean being on for about two seconds... One battery line left. Went to use it last night, it died. So, about 45 minutes of use and the thing is dead.

So it says: 3.7V Li-ion Polymer Battery 680mAh
But, as long as you're sure the MP3 player will be okay if I take the battery off when I don't use it, I'll just do that.
After I make it some kind of little carry case.

After I make it some kind of little carry case. the mp3 player will be just fine, everything is stored on the hard drive inside so you will be fine. as for the battery that is a lithium ion, you should either just learn to deal with it (crappy) or buy a new one or have it replaced, their supposed to last alot longer than 45 minutes.

I know it should last longer. Especially since it seems to be the lack of use that's killing it, and not the use. I feel like if I used it right after charging it, I could get lots of life out of it, probably. But when I let it sit a week without use, it dies. I'm working towards making a case for the whole thing (it's too hard to find one in the store, just easier to sew a simple one up), so that I can keep it all together without each piece being attached.

Lithem loses it's charge after a while.
If it is just the battery, then see how long you can listen to it without it dying.
Or charge it every night.

I don't use it enough to charge it every night. That would just be a waste. But I usually try and make a point of charging it before use .

You should anyways. Just a day can waste 1/2 battery power.
I usally don't know when I use mine. So I charge it when I'm not using it.
