Yes. I know this is an odd topic. Heh. I love Sailor Moon. I'm currently watching Stars on youtube. Its great! So, if anyone else knows, all the Japanese names on Sailor Moon are like puns. For example, Usagi Tsukino (or Tsukino Usagi if you want to get technical) means "rabbit of the moon". So I thought, hey! Lets see what the English names mean. I love names and meanings, I'm always curious. And since I think the English version of Sailor Moon is basically scum (no offense to fans!) I decided to see if they did a decent job with names Here is what I have found out:
Serena (AKA Usagi: Calm I can understand why they used Serena, like as a nickname for Serenity. But still, shes anything but calm.
Amy (AKA Ami): Beloved One I can see this. Shes all sweet and kind. And its basically just the English version of Ami.
Raye (AKA Rei): Ewe O_o; Yes, Raye is actually a nickname of the name Rachael. Rachael means ewe. An ewe is a female sheep. I dunno, she doesn't seem to sheeplike to me.
Lita (aka Makota): Orchard Hmmm. Lita is actually a nickname of Carmelita, which in turn is the feminine version of Carmel.
Mina (AKA Minako): "First-Born Daughter" Mina in a way is like a nick name for Minako. And first-born daughter makes sense, since she is the leader.
Amara (AKA Haruka): Everlasting I like the meaning of the name. Everlasting, like the sky. However Amara is way too feminine for her.
Michelle (Michiru):Who Resembles God Well, she is basically perfect in everyway. Still, they could have gotten a more unique name.
Trista (AKA Setsuna): Meaning has been lost Trista is the feminine form of Tristian. It seems like the guardian of time should have a more...mysterious...name.
Hotaru: Firefly Hotaru was the only character whose name didn't change (thank you. I nearly shed tears of joy. I think it fits her.
Rini (AKA Chibiusa): Pure Rini is a alternate form of Rina. I can understand the meaning, because she is a child.
Darien (AKA Mamoru): place Darien is actually the name of several places in central america

Amara is too, uhm, feminine I guess. I always thought she'd be named like Alex or Sam or something in the english version. You know, like one of those names that can be for a girl or a boy.

Hope you don't mind, but I'm gonna run a commentary through these, since it seems you're missing a few points in describing the names, and I'm always up for friendly debates. :3
Look out, this could be a LONG read!Ame no Tenshi Serena (AKA Usagi: Calm I can understand why they used Serena, like as a nickname for Serenity. But still, shes anything but calm. Nothing wrong with this one. That's what it means, and I agree that it doesn't really fit (not to mention that the whole Serena/Serenity connection just shouldn't have been made in the first place).
Though I would like to mention how my sister's name is Serina. Said the same, just different spelling. Her and Serena are almost completely identical - long blonde hair, blue eyes, a bit of a klutz and all that good stuff. Though her twin isn't much like either of them. When you're five years old, this can be really freaky.Ame no Tenshi Amy (AKA Ami): Beloved One I can see this. Shes all sweet and kind. And its basically just the English version of Ami. Hear, hear.Ame no Tenshi Raye (AKA Rei): Ewe O_o; Yes, Raye is actually a nickname of the name Rachael. Rachael means ewe. An ewe is a female sheep. I dunno, she doesn't seem to sheeplike to me. You just got through saying how "Amy" is the English version of "Ami"...
"Raye" is the English version of "Rei", no matter its English meaning, if you ask me.Ame no Tenshi Lita (aka Makota): Orchard Hmmm. Lita is actually a nickname of Carmelita, which in turn is the feminine version of Carmel. Actually, the meaning "Orchard" makes a whole lot of sense, considering that to the Japanese, Jupiter (the planet) represents the element of Wood (a common element to the Chinese, such as fire, wind or water to us), and "Lita" represents that well. "Oak Evolution", anyone?
The only reason she has lightning attacks is in reference to the god, Jupiter (or Zeus) whose main weapons were bolts of lightning. It's not actually her element.
(Also, it's "Makoto", not "Makota", but that could easily have been just a typo.)Ame no Tenshi Mina (AKA Minako): "First-Born Daughter" Mina in a way is like a nick name for Minako. And first-born daughter makes sense, since she is the leader. That does make sense. But it also seems to me as if it also could just be the English version of "Minako", since "ko" on a name usually denotes feminism, such as an "ie" or "y" would to us English speakers. And there's no such name as "Minaee" or "Minay"... wow, it doesn't even come out right when trying to spell it!
"First-Born" could also be in the sense that she was the first to reawaken as a Senshi in the series.Ame no Tenshi Amara (AKA Haruka): Everlasting I like the meaning of the name. Everlasting, like the sky. However Amara is way too feminine for her. Agreed. However, it could just be that the name fit with the syllables of "Haruka", making it easier to dub and all that. Not to mention that the meaning does fit with her element quite well.Ame no Tenshi Michelle (Michiru):Who Resembles God Well, she is basically perfect in everyway. Still, they could have gotten a more unique name. Again, it just seems to be the English version of the name that fit best.Ame no Tenshi Trista (AKA Setsuna): Meaning has been lost Trista is the feminine form of Tristian. It seems like the guardian of time should have a more...mysterious...name. Meaning has been lost, as in lost to time, maybe? *shrug* This one's got me pretty good, I admit.Ame no Tenshi Hotaru: Firefly Hotaru was the only character whose name didn't change ( thank you. I nearly shed tears of joy. I think it fits her. Luna, Artemis and Diana's names didn't change. ;3Ame no Tenshi Rini (AKA Chibiusa): Pure Rini is a alternate form of Rina. I can understand the meaning, because she is a child. "Rini" is also a shortened form of "Serena" in the same way that "Chibiusa" ("little Usa") could be shortened and made cute of "Usagi". Although the meaning is an exceptionally nice fit as well, even more so considering the Pegasus/Dream Mirror arc.Ame no Tenshi Darien (AKA Mamoru): place Darien is actually the name of several places in central america Alright. For this name, you need to look at both his full Japanese name (Chiba Mamoru) and his full English name (Darien Shields).
Chiba Mamoru is a pun that essentially can be taken as "Local Protector/Guardian"*. Darien Shields could be taken much the same way, literally "Shield of Places". It fits since he's the former Prince of Earth and the future Neo-King of it, presently a protector of it alongside the Sailor Soldiers.
I felt that Darien's name as actually the most accurate, complete translation of a name in the entire dub (since everyone else seemed to get an Americanized first name, but retained their Japanese last name, leaving them with nearly no meaning at all, save for Hotaru, who only had her last name pronunciation altered).
This is also displayed in how "Tuxedo Kamen" becomes "Tuxedo Mask" (an extremely literal and correct translation), as opposed to how "Senshi" becomes "Scouts" in the dub (ugh!), when it should have been "Soldier".OKAY! RANT OVER! IT'S SAFE TO COME OUT NOW!Yeah... just wanted to let that all out. Hope everyone learned something and that no one's mad/offended at me and my OCD ways.
But, I also wanted to show how not all of the people who worked at DiC or Cloverway were completely incompetent. A lot of them were good translations.*Wikipedia is your friend. Scroll down to profile if you want to see the specifics about the literal translation of Mamoru's name.

When I started watching this back in '95 I thought they had the best names ever until I fould out their real names and meanings then I thought, "Did DIC put any thought into names?"
Maybe they did, maybe they didn't or maybe they met themselves half way
Whichever, I still cringe at the english names
