Brightest Crayon in the Box
Welcome to Brightest Crayon in the Box, our Featured Colorist of the Month post. Each month one of our colorists is randomly selected via Randomizer.org, and we post a little about them so you can get to know them and ask them questions. Feel free to leave any random questions you want to know in the thread, from "How do you do (x) technique?" to "What's your favorite candy bar?" The colorist has the option of coming back and answering the questions for you, or they will be used for the next month's colorist. Each month a new colorist will be picked, and the post will be decorated in their crayon color for the entire month. heart
Previous Brightest Crayons: May 2005: Chicky-chans Ghost June 2005: spy//alex July 2005: Pixel Wicheta Brightest Crayon of August: Silver (Khetienn)
Name: Khetienn
Crayon color: Silver
A little about you: I'm 20 years old, a redhead, and slightly crazy. That mostly covers what you need to know about me. That and the fact that it's dangerous to ask me any question you really don't want to know the answer to. twisted
Favorite coloring style: Softshade/"painterly"
Program you use for coloring, also hardware: Photoshop, sometimes Painter, Wacom tablet
Favorite color?: Silver, black, turquoise, purple
Best picture you ever colored: Probably this right here.
Advice to other colorists/tips/tricks: Play! Some of the best effects I've ever gotten have been from screwing around. Try tons of different styles to find what works for you. Tutorials are your best friend, but don't feel like you have to copy them exactly. Take what you learn and make it your own.
Who are your favorite digital artists?: These are mostly DeviantArt names, but *pu-sama, *enayla, *Saimain, =mellon, ~tiffa, and lots of others.
Do you remember your very first try at coloring on the computer?: Actually I don't, but it probably sucked.
How long have you been coloring?: Umm, four years at least, maybe two-ish with the tablet? I dunno, they all start to run together after a while.
Personal thoughts on "filters"? Thoughts on using photographs as backdrops / parts of a piece?: Filters are okay, if used creatively and non-obviously. Don't EVER use a photograph as the background for your piece unless your painting is DAMN realistic. It just looks cheesy and fake and like you don't know what you're doing.
Were you ever into the Lineart Jam?: Yeah, I used to be, but then my computer fudged up and now I can't see anything with "img" in the url... but I found the archive, and got a bunch of lineart there. I just never finish anything. sweatdrop
Which do you enjoy more, coloring your own pictures or other peoples' pictures?: I like coloring other peoples' stuff better, because I can never make mine turn out the way I want them to.
Do you listen to any music in particular when you color? Or do you have to have silence? Or maybe you listen to the TV/radio? Does it help you focus?: I almost always listen to music when coloring or producing art of any kind.
If music, what's your favorite band/cd to work to?: It depends on the mood of the picture, actually. My playlist ranges from heavy metal to Celtic to 90's alternative to electronica to other random stuff, so I can find a match to just about anything I need. Or I can just put it on random and take what comes up.
What part of a picture is the most fun to color?: Hair and eyes.
Do you have a personal art gallery or art galleries? Where is it (/are they)?: http://goddesschaos.deviantart.com Not as updated as it should be, because I'm lazy. Someday I'll dig up a bunch of old sketches and post them.
What is the one tool in your program of choice that you could NOT do without?: I love the smudge tool. Set on a spattery brush, it's great for painting.
Is there any one color you ALWAYS use in a picture?: Actually I don't think there is. I "see" the picture colored in my mind, and go with what I see, not with my own color preferences.
What's your favorite animal and why?: Dragons... oh wait, real animals? Cats, of all kinds.
If you were going to be a flavor of ice cream, which one would you be?: That's a hard question, and I even made it up! I took a test that said I would be mocha, but I hate coffee, so I'm going to have to say no on that and pick strawberry, because I can be sweet if I want to, but a little fruity.
Do you have a favorite anime/manga?: Neon Genesis Evangelion for story, but I love the art in Angel Sanctuary and a lot of others.
Which is better: glitter or feathers?: Umm... glittery feathers? If I had to pick one... feathers. I collect them.

I'll post up some questions I'd like to see answered... by the BCITB, not you, Khet blaugh
Who are your favorite digital artists? Have you ever purchased or checked out a book on digital art/painting? Any recommendations or thoughts about those books? Why did you start coloring pictures in the first place? Do you remember your very first try at coloring on the computer? How long have you been coloring? With each program if you've used several. edit: that was a dumb question, nevermind it xp *deletes it* Were you ever into the Lineart Jam? Which do you enjoy more, coloring your own pictures or other peoples' pictures? Do you listen to any music in particular when you color? Or do you have to have silence? Or maybe you listen to the TV/radio? Does it help you focus? What part of a picture is the most fun to color? (ex: hair, skin, background, clothing, eyes, etc etc) Do you have a personal art gallery or art galleries? Where is it (/are they)? (link to it/them if you like) Which is harder: coloring, making crisp lineart, or drawing? What is the one tool in your program of choice that you could NOT do without?
