First there was "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance"

Then the award- winning "Old Boy"

Now it looks like director Park Chan-Wook is working on the thrid and final installment, titled "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" or "Vengeance is Hers". It is going to star Lee Young-Ae, (picture below) and aside from the movie dealing with revenge and that it's scheduled to come out in 2005, I have no information on it.

So - anyone see "Sympathy"? "Old Boy"? Wanna talk about it?

Here is a great site for info on Sympathy for Mrs. Vengeance, including four official movie poster candidates. Looks like the films shaping up nicely. Enjoy! http://www.filmacco.com/films/lady_veng.php

I've seen most of the beginning of Old Boy. I remember the teeth extraction bit. Not that I want to. Like I said before, I'm going to watch it again. It really didn't have the impact I was expecting the first time around, but I was distracted, anyway.

I knew ... that person ... was gonna come in to play at some point, but I kind of thought it was gonna be the hypnotist. For whatever reason. Anyway, more than the twist, I loved the bad guy's justification of what he did. His last scene in the elevator made me feel really sorry for him.

A korean friend of mine has done nothing but tell me to watch Oldboy and Symphaty for Mr Vengeance over and over.

I downloaded Oldboy but haven't watched it yet. Should I watch Mr Vengeance first?

Yeah! Watch them!

I don't think you need to stay in any kind of order with these. They have nothing to do with each other plotwise, and they're both great. I used to say Old Boy was the better one, but now I think that's just because it didn't leave me with a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach like Sympathy did. What a bleak movie.

Old Boy was awesome, about half-way through the movie, i had a gut feeling who the girl was, but then i convinced myself that Park would never do that. boy did he prove me wrong xd .

Sympathy for Mr. Vengence is about a guy (Ryu) whos had it hard in his life (he was death and mute). Sister dying from a terminal illness, so Ryu has to take care of her, got fired from job because of this. Needs money to pay for sister's operation to save her life. Finally, Ryu is talked into holding a wealthy man's daughter for some ransome money, but sister dies.. and we get one hella pissed off deaf/mute guy. And i am sure you can guess wats gonna happen wink .

Well, let's just say vengeance is gotten. It's gotten in a throughly hardcore way.

"Universal Pictures are planning a remake of the revenge thriller Oldboy by South Korean director Park Chan-wook (Sympathy For Mr Vengeance).

The film, which won the Grand Prix at this year's Cannes Film Festival, is about a man imprisoned for 15 years for reasons unknown, by people unknown. As mysteriously as he was captured, the protaganist is then released, spending the remainder of the film trying to piece together what happened and attempting to achieve vengeance.

The remake will be directed by Justin Lin, the Taiwanese director of cult crime drama Better Luck Tomorrow. Lin will co-write the adaptation with Ernesto Foronda and Fabian Marquez, who also wrote Better Luck Tomorrow."

I never saw Better Luck Tommorow, but crying crying crying anyway. Is it just because the kid is asian? Or was BLT genuinely a good "crime drama"?
PostPosted: Wed Aug 04, 2004 5:25 am

Better Luck Tomorrow. I personally thought it was a good film, but a VERY different atmosphere from Old Boy. I'm curious as to how Lin will handle this movie, since BLT is the only movie I've seen from him. I'd rather they get someone with more experience, like how Scorsese is supposed to helm Infernal Affairs. I'm not sure how accurate that article is, anyway, but I thought it was supposed to be David Lynch? I'll check more articles.

Well, here's another article that says it's Justin Lin. Oh well. Let's wish him luck.

"Oldboy Has A Makeover

Another Asian remake coming
03 August 2004
It was the toast of Cannes, the outright favourite of jury president Quentin Tarantino and has proved a huge success in its native Korea. With a mixture of extreme violence, stunning visuals and one of the best fight scenes ever, Oldboy has blown audiences away – and some of those cunning movie executives have had the bright and highly original idea of an American remake.

Justin Lin, best known for directing Better Luck Tomorrow, a tale of Asian-American high school overachievers who turn to crime, will be heading the project. He'll be working on an English script with his Better Luck screenwriters Ernesto Foronda and Fabian Marquez. They're all relatively untried talents, but that doesn't necessarily mean it won't work. Lin is currently working on Annapolis, the story of a wannabe Naval officer with James Franco, so Oldboy will presumably follow that.

The real question here though is how far will Hollywood go? Park Chan-Wook's film famously features a scene of a man eating a live octopus on camera (apparently it took four takes to get it right. Yuck.) and one very sick twist. Will an American studio picture have the (octopus) guts to go as far? Or will they pull back and produce a bloodless PG-13 version of a bloody masterpiece? We'll have to wait and see. In the meantime, the original Oldboy in all its gory glory has yet to hit our screens, but you will have a chance to check it out long before any remake arrives. "
