Hardcore punk revivalists AFI (A Fire Inside) originally formed in 1991 when its members -- vocalist Davey Havok, guitarist Markus Stopholese, bassist Vick, and drummer Adam Carson were attending high school in Ukiah, CA. Vick was replaced by Geoff Kresge after several months, and the band played a few local gigs and released a split 7" with fellow Ukiah natives Loose Change, as well as an EP titled Behind the Times. The bandmembers then split up to attend different colleges, with Kresge temporarily moving to New Jersey to join Blanks 77, and all assumed AFI was defunct. However, the band reconvened during a holiday break from school to play a one-off reunion show, and audience response was so positive that the bandmembers decided to quit school and concentrate on music full-time. A couple of singles preceded a record deal with the Nitro label, which issued the band's second album, Very Proud of Ya, in 1996. Two LPs followed in 1997, a re-release of the debut, Answer That & Stay Fashionable, and Shut Your Mouth & Open Your Eyes, and personnel shifts ensued; Kresge was the first to leave, being replaced by Hunter, and Stopholese departed in favor of ex-Redemption 87 guitarist Jade Puget. The new lineup recorded an EP titled A Fire Inside in 1998, and issued a full-length album in 1999, Black Sails in the Sunset. Art of Drowning followed a year later. In the new millennium, AFI hooked up with Garbage's Butch Vig for some recording. The end result was Sing the Sorrow, released in March 2003, their major-label debut for DreamWorks.

I love A.F.I.--in my opinion, it's one of a very few great mainstream alternative bands. I think my favorite album is Art of Drowning...do any of you have a favorite?

AFI is a great band. Tho, i think i liked 'the art of drowning' better than their newest cd, 'sing the sorrow'. But girls not grey and silver and cold were awesome. maybe thats just my opinion tho xd

yeah.. alot of my friends didnt really like the new album.. i on the other hand loved it.. davey's voice has matured and become so much fuller.. you can definately hear a difference and its wonderful.. not saying i didnt love his voice before, but you can hear a big change in it now.. the whole 'sing the sorrow' album is great.. every song on it gave me goose bumps...

Yeup, this is some great stuff.

I got into them because Dexter Holland seemed to love the kids so much, so I gave 'em a try. Five disks later, I can't say there's really anything of theirs I dislike. Oh sure, there's songs I skip to get to songs I like MORE, but I don't dislike those songs any. All Hollow's EP got me into the guys, but I think my favorite is Sing the Sorrow. At least it's the one I play the most.

I personally cannot wait for a new album to come out...Even an EP would be great!

Yes! I really hope they would finish up quickly so they can release it earlier. A tour would be awesome too. I really want to see them live.

I love AFI but I'm sorry to say I only own sing the sorrow. But I do love it and really want to see them live. Can't wait for the new album.

Oh, and on MTV on 31st Oct, there's gonna be a programme about the cure and I hear AFI shall be performing a cover of a cure song. That should be good 3nodding

I greatly enjoy AFI. I have for almost 5 years now. I have all their albums and two EPs. (I'm working on getting the rest of the EPs and wishing for at least one vinyl.)

My favorite song at the moment is Don't Make Me Ill and my favorite album is Shut Your Mouth & Open Your Eyes. My favorite EP (out of the two I have) is All Hallow's EP.

My count of times I've tryed to see them live is 3, I believe.

I do hope that that isn't live. Because that would mean they wouldn't be doing their well known Halloween show this year. Instead they'd be doing some stupid thing on MTV. (Don't get me wrong I think it's cool they'll be doing a Cure cover. The Cure is good. But you know what I mean, right?) It would just make me sad.

I rather wait forever and a day for their next album to come out then them push it forward and do things more quickly. Their work wouldn't be as good if they just flung another album out their a**.
