Ebon adjusted her glistening black wings once again for the change in air pressure, but the tumultuous winds were slackening to little more than a brisk breeze. She'd followed the storm inland, but now that had passed over most of the width of the Glades it had turned into a pleasantly light shower of rain. Most of the fight had gone out of the winds by now... she supposed she ought to be heading back. Glacia and Pyre rarely waited up for her when she went storm-riding, but still, she wasn't a teen anymore, to go galavanting off and leaving her two friends without a clue to where she went.
She leveled off over the river, intent on catching a quick snack before she turned around, when she saw something that looked suspiciously like a building peeking through the misty haze of rain. Curious, she drifted closer, snack forgotten in the light of this new discovery. There weren't really all that many people who settled this close to Bareyun and so far from the main thoroughfaire of humanity at the lakes. She was curious to see what sort of folk wandered so far from the fold.
Ebon settled down to land gracefully, though her wings still kicked up a good deal of wind and small plant debris, and approached a bit more slowly on foot. She found she was recieved better most of the time when she met the land bound people on their own terms.

Luffen had tucked his and Vix's home away in the woods, carefully concealing the back of it by coaxing growth and spreading leaves from the woods to the rear. But from the front, it appeared to be a quaint yet expertly built house. There were round windows as opposed to the typical square ones, and the roof was built in much more of a slope in contrast to a peak. It appeared to be no more than one or two rooms. A beaten dirt path twined its way to the doorstep, lined by trim grass with short hedges that promised brilliant flowers right beside the door.
Light poured out of the left window of the home, ensuring that there were people inside enjoying the warmth of a fire as opposed to the pleasant rain outside. The scents around the home suggested that there were no more than three people living in the house, possibly less. But the scents were fresh, if a little dampened by the storm.
Inside, Luffen was seated in his small study with the fire blazing behind him. His long beard gave the impression of many years beyond his apperance, and his own stamina didn't show years either. He was presently bent over a stack of open books, taking notes with a quill pen in one hand while his other spun a leaf in absent-minded circles. The mage had no recollection of anything approaching the home, or at least he made no notice of knowing.

Ebon trotted up to about a dozen paces from the door and seated herself. She ignored her mildly obnoxious urge to peer in through the lit window and examined the damp scents. Around three inhabitants... and one of the scents smelled distinctly of dragon. She smiled to herself. At least they allowed dragons around here, then. She wondered where the Nest was, since she hadn't seen it. Not that it really mattered.
Ebon lifted her tapered muzzle and emitted a soft bugle to announce her presense. She preferred that over knocking on the door, it usually seemed more effective. They could still ignore her if they chose, of course. She wasn't a local dragon, so they didn't really have any obligation to be courteous the way they would with a dragon that lived in the area.

There was a startle from inside - Luffen obviously miss-writing something that he considered infinitely more important than visitors. The sounds of a chair scraping back and footsteps drifted out of the window, which was opened wide in a few moments as the older-appearing gentlemen stuck his head outside, obviously about to start yelling. His glasses slipped down his nose a bit as he stared at the full grown dragon sitting in his front yard.
"H-Hakan?" He mumbled for a moment to himself under his breath, then shook his head. "I'll be right out, miss." Sharp fellow, this one, to be able to tell dragon gender so easily. He shut the window, a few moments passing before he opened the front door and stepped out under the eaves to look at her. A wooden staff was clutched in his left hand, and he leaned some of his weight on the intricately carved piece of wood. It crackled with life energy just as he did, marking him as a magic-wielder beyond a doubt.
"Now, is there something I can do for you, hmm?" He peered up at her, talking a little louder than usual to try and defeat the sound of the rain. He had no more than finished speaking when there was a loud commotion from Ebon's left in the woods as a young fox burst through the thicker growth of the forest.
"Woooow! It is another dragon!" Smiling across her muzzle, she moved closer to the giant creature with her head tilted back to see her better. The young yellow and white Furre was wearing a plain brown tunic and pants - both covered in mud - which was a strange choice in garb for someone of her gender. At her side a large, leather messenger bag hung, leaves and flowers sticking out of one side of it. She smelled strongly of the forest and of dragon.

Ebon shifted to the side slightly as the girl fox burst out of the foliage. She blinked slightly, and then extended her wing over the young furre's head, not that the gesture really did much aside from satisfying some obscure maternal instinct to keep the young ones out of the rain. "Little one," she said dryly, "don't EVER do that to a Teneh'gree. It would eat you out of spite."
She grinned apologetically to the gentleman as well as she was able. "Pardon the interuption..." She eyed the staff respectfully, and inclined her head. "I was following the storm, I seem to have flown a bit farther than I normally do," and as she said that she suddenly felt incredibly weary, and since she wasn't sure what she'd been about say after that in the first place, continued with, "I saw your home from a ways off by the river, and it smells like you have a dragon around here. I was wondering if you might have a spot out of the wet where I could rest for a while." She motioned back toward the river with her unoccupied wing. "I'd be happy to catch some fish for you, if you'd like... they're more active after it's rained."
That last bit was fairly common knowledge. It almost seemed a silly thing to have said, but she'd said it so there it was... Ebon wasn't precisely afraid of strong magic users, they just made her a bit nervous sometimes. She was quite ready to apologize for inconveniencing him and leave.

Vix's ears shifted back a bit at the dragon's statement, but her enthusiasm didn't seem to be dappened one bit. In fact, her grin broadened until her teeth were showing at the outstretched wing - a gesture that no doubt would have startled a human and unsettled elves. Well, what's that?" Her ear flickered a bit in curiosity, still staring up at the dragon.
The older man looked like he would have whalloped her across the head if he could have reached her with his cane at that moment. "Vix! It's impolite to stare - and shut your mouth, you look like a fool!" He shook his head, sighing disagreeably. From the way that the young Kitsune shot him a broader grin, she was used to his outbursts and his frustration and probably took complete advantage of it when she could. That or she knew very well he wasn't coming out into the rain after her.
"And you-" he waved his hand absently at the dragon, "- have no reason to be sorry." He smiled up at her kindly then, nodding to himself about something or other. "It is good to see one of your kind around these parts. It has been too long since I've seen a dragon kin."
"Now, let's take care of this rain for you." Luffen stepped out from under the eaves that shielded him from the rain, his step looking too young to match his use of the cane and appearance. He sighed, closing his eyes for a moment before tapping the end of the staff on the ground and opening his eyes to look up at the sky. Energies wavered before bending to his will, and the winds picked up strongly for a few heartbeats. When the storm clouds and the rain had been blown farther to the east, the wind died.
Luffen rested heavily on his staff then, attention turning to the young fox and the dragon again. "There are no dragons as old as you around here - and none so big. But the clearing behind the house should be decently dry. Please, stay as long as you would like. There's no need to pay me back, for I'm sure my apprentice won't let you sleep soundly." He eyed the young fox, shaking his head. "She's harmless, if a little too rambunctious." Vix ground a bare paw into the mud, ears pinned back a bit against her head. He was chastising her, though it was subtle for the guest in front of them.
He turned back to the dragon before continuing. "If you would like, I'm sure Vix could bring something out for you to eat." The apprentice mage said nothing to his words, though had she been human she may have been blushing.

Ebon nonchalantly let her wing relax so that it virtually covered the young furre beneath it, and grinned with a bit of mischief. "The little one won't be too much of a bother, I assure you. I have two companions of teen age, old enough to be on their own, but they still act like children. I'm not much better, at times." She found herself yawning, showing very sharp needle teeth lining her jaws. She shook her head slightly and stood. "Thank you for your hospitality."
She stretched her forelegs slightly, taking care to make sure her hooked foreclaws stayed away from anything or anyone they might snag on, and nudged at the young fox with her muzzle. "Lead the way oh springy one."

Grinning up at the dragon, she shot a triumphant glance to Luffen. She had won, as far as she was concerned, and she wasn't afraid to show it. "I'm Vix, by the way! Vix Mythrylpaw." She paused, as if waiting for recognition of some sort from the dragon.
Luffen shook his head, still resting heavily on his staff and looking in no rush to move on just yet. "That may be so, but don't feel like you have to put up with her. Send her back to the house if you get tired of entertaining." He nodded his head thoughtfully as he spoke. "Ahhh, by the way, you may call me Elwood Luffen."
The fox pricked her ears at that, then spoke up. "Master Elwood Luffen." She chided him with a grin still on her muzzle, and was met with a hard stare. "She is a guest here, and not my apprentice." Luffen corrected the youngling with the tone in his voice, making it clear that she had made a sort of misstep, something that Ebon may not understand. Of course, his change of the weather had already made it quite clear his own power.
"Come on!" Vix reached out to the dragon, hopping a bit to grab at her wingtip to lead her around the house and back into the woods. The jump jostled the bag at her side, and a startled - and rather angry - chirruping noise was the response. Vix froze where she was, looking down at the bag with a sheepish smile.

Ebon may not have understood entirely what had passed between master and apprentice about Elwood Luffen's title, but she knew well enough that such men (and women) had their reasons for employing or not employing their verbal marks of rank. It could range from a form of protection for those they encountered to simple personal preference; it didn't really matter, either way. Ebon would respect the man's wishes. She inclined her head, not entirely leaving out Vix. "Elwood Luffen, Vix Mythrylpaw... I am Ebon. I don't have anything so grand as a surname, I fear, for I don't currently have a Nest. I am the last remaining of my family on this continent, though life does seem to have flung some misfits my way that I've taken under my wing." She grinned ruefully, trusting that the old gentleman would understand the difficulties of a lone dragon. She wasn't exactly a rogue; though she'd had no desire to leave when the rest of her family returned to their native continent. Indeed, though she was old enough she hadn't had enough long distance flight experience to make it through the trip if she had wanted to go. It was half her choice, so it stung less, but still, she'd been left behind and that didn't sit too well at times.
Ebon tilted her head inquiringly at the bag's complaint and deftly tugged it open with one of her hooked claws. Careful not to harm the bag or it's passenger, she smiled softly. "What have we here, then?"

Luffen did indeed understand Ebon's situation, if only a little. A single human had troubles living alone, and they usually didn't have to hunt for their own food and escape other, non-accepting humans. He bowed his head respectfully as Ebon introduced herself, even as Vix seemed to grow more and more impatient.
As Ebon investigated the bag, peeling it open with her claw, a small red head was shoved out. The little dragon gave another squawk, obviously upset at having been woken. Vix, unthinking about Ebon with her claw in the bag, flopped down onto the damp grass, clucking lightly. "Shh, shhh, I'm sorry. I really didn't mean to wake you up this time." She reached her pawed hand in, uncaring of the large foreclaw of the older dragon, and stroked the hatchling female's head and back.
"Ebon, this is Hakan. Hakan, hush now, you're gonna chase off Ebon." The fire dragon gave a heavy snort, blinking wearily up at the Furre before turning her tiny snout towards Ebon.
"I told you not to take her out in this rain. I bet she'll come in with a cold now, Vix." Luffen shook his head, still chastising his student. "And I'm sure she mauled any of the specimens you managed to bring back, if you even remembered to do that today." The fox's ears flicked down around her head, and she looked thoroughly embarassed. "I did too remember! And she didn't do that!"

Ebon made sure neither Vix nor Hakan came into contact with the hooked end of her claw. Vix might not think about it, having been in contact with Hakan, but there was a large difference between the claws of a baby fire dragon and the claws of an adult storm dragon. She sat back a little and crouched down for a closer look at the small dragon, uttering a long, almost purring coo that carried on for a few moments. Her mother had always used it to calm her down when she was small... perhaps it would help here, too.
"I think perhaps if you get her inside now she might be uncomfortable, but not come down with something. The bag offered some protection from the rain, though it would be best to get her out of it since it's still wet..." She spoke softly, with a note of amusement. She hadn't seen such a small dragon in a rather long time.
She stood back up and gently nudged Vix toward the door. "I think I can find my way around back on my own, you'd best take care of your little charge there before she has time to get worked up. If you want you can come talk to me after that."

Vix looked down at the tiny bundle, ears flagging down slightly at being hit from both ends. "Y-Yeah... I guess you're right." Her pawed hand still caressed the hatchling affectionately, though it was obvious that Hakan was starting to become a little chilled. To Vix's dismay, the little fire dragon issued a small sneeze. Her ears dropped a little more.
"Hurry up, now, and get inside. The fire's going already, but add some more to it. And warm her up some milk. I'll show Ebon around back." Luffen had finally straightened slightly, though it was apparent he'd be much more comfortable heading inside and letting the younger fox show the dragon around the house. He didn't, however, complain an ounce.
The Furre stood slowly, ignoring the mud that caked on her clothing and had probably soaked her to the fur on her knees. She was much more careful this time with her movements, taking a slow path towards the house with her ears down and her head slightly ducked. Her white-tipped fluffy tail was a little limp behind her, it also being covered in mud and water.
"Change your clothes before you head back out, and set those to clean and dry." Luffen placed a hand on her shoulder, guiding her towards the house, as she came close to him. Then he turned his attention to Ebon, nodding again. "Come along, then." He took his own steps towards the back of the house, strangely unrelying on the staff. The ground under him was oddly dry and unmuddied, though when he moved his feet there was surely enough water and mud to be proof of the storm.

Ebon found herself following Elwood Luffen and feeling slightly bemused. The master and his apprentice were starting to remind her of her uncle and cousin. It was both pleasant and unpleasant; she cared for her family and missed them, but simply taking off in the general direction they'd gone when they left was more than just a little foolish. She had no idea where they'd gone, other than west.
She shook memories and fragments of pain away, and looked down at Luffen. "Vix seems quite the handful." Not really having anything else to say, she lapsed into silence until they came to the clear area behind the house. The grass looked lush and thick, though not unruly. It would be a pleasant cushion. Not that cushioning mattered much to a dragon's scales.
"Ah... This looks very nice, thank you." She settled down, forelegs crossed one over the other, tail half curled around her body with the last couple of feet twitching back and forth; she almost looked like some great scaly cat enjoying a patch of sun right before a nap.
"You don't really need to worry about feeding me... if I'm hungry when I wake I can get some fish. I like it when they're still wiggling." She grinned predatorily at her own comment, and then softened her expression. "Thank you again. You are very kind."

Finding himself a nice place to the side of the clearing to give Ebon plenty of room, the human settled himself to leaning comfortably against a tree as the dragon laid herself down. He contemplated her comment about Vix for a few moments before responding, a small smile in his eyes as he spoke.
"She is indeed a handful; too much enthusiasm for things. Nevertheless, she's a good child. Or at least, good-meaning." She clucked a bit to him himself before continuing. "She'll no doubt have plenty of questions for you. And I'll admit that her questions aren't for me for an evening." His smile deepened toward the dragon, and he bowed his head respectfully.
"Ah, but Hakan is very much like you in that respect. We have nets set-up to catch them as they move up and down stream. If you won't let us bring them to you, then at least pull them out of the nets for yourself."

Ebon had always heard that fire dragons prefered deer and other larger game over fish; of course, there were always flukes here and there, and it made sense that an infant might prefer the easier to swallow fish. "I suppose I'll leave it up to Vix whether she wants to bring some to me or not, then."
She couldn't help but smile at the man's affection for the young fox. Definitley like her uncle; strict, but never about anything that wasn't for your own good. "I suppose I'll answer her questions as best I can. Some might be better answered by my companions if we ever happen to find ourselves in the area. Though seeing the three of us would probably raise more questions than the ones already answered. A storm dragon, water dragon, and fire dragon are a bit of an odd set, even I must admit."
Contemplating her friends brought her thoughs back to the small fire dragon. "Hakan, how old is she? She can't be very old... I suppose it might be better to ask Vix. I just remembered you said there aren't any older dragons in the area..."
