uh... I've scanned over the topics of this forum... and didn't see an alt. thread sweatdrop
Alternative to me is music like: LP, Autopilot off, blink182, NFG, less than jake, and Yellowcard... etc etc etc -other definitions of justice o.o-- <'new rock that hasn't become popularly accepted yet'/'new rock by people who don't want to sound like they're the same old same old>
For example: Bright Eyes, The Unicorns, Beck, The Pixies, The Flaming Lips, Radiohead, Spoon, ect.
^bands like that... heh, if my definition doesn't please you... tell me your definiton and I'll add it up here ^__^
AHAHAHAhAHAhahA sweatdrop heart so I guess you can talk here about your favourite Alt. bands and stuff like that :3

i THINK linkin park is alternative, since they won an American Music Award for "best alternative group, band, or duo".
but that would kill the "music without screaming" theory, eh?

I think Amseflu is pretty right, everyone has his/her own opinion about what is alternative or not...It's written nowhere so no one can tell you what's really alternative..

I agree with how Kaasworstje said that you can't really define "Alternative".
But, I don't think all of the bands [kizioko] gave as examples could be considered as such.
Ex. Blink 182 and New Found Glory are considered to be "Pop Punk" or "Pop Rock".
Yellowcard is Mainstream Rock, and so is Autopilot off.
Less Than Jake is "Ska".
Well, in my opinion.
What I consider to be "Alternative" is pretty much synonymous with "Indie".
For example: Bright Eyes, The Unicorns, Beck, The Pixies, The Flaming Lips, Radiohead, Spoon, ect.

I think that alternative tends to be 'the next big thing'. I mean, in the early nineties alternative meant bands like Depeche Mode, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam. But by the time I graduated from high school -EVERYBODY- was listening to them (with the exception, it seemed, of me -- I'd discovered classic rock and was loving my Queen and Aerosmith). Alternative is always popular, but it's different from the music that came before it, and it's not pop. I'd personally just call it 'New Rock'. I'd never heard Blink 182 classified as Alternative until today, but thinking about it they remind me a lot of Green Day, which was alternative once upon a time.

momo.PEACHiE well, what i thought i was listening to was the rock station, but the official name is "alternative station", so maybe it's just rock...? I think it's better to say it's 'new rock that hasn't become popularly accepted yet', or 'new rock by bands that haven't made it big yet' or maybe just 'new rock by people who don't want to sound like they're the same old same old.'

I thought Alternative, was basically music that was alternative to mainstream, such as indie, and then punk, metal, ska, emo, hardcore, etc. etc...but then what about jazz and classical and electronica and all those other genres? eek

Even though I'm a heavy metaler, I do love Alt rock ^_^; Green Day, Blink-182, and Yellowcard; their boyish sound always reminds me of my boyfriend. Just stuff like that to listen to when you're in a good mood is awesome. Bad mood is fer heavy metal to scream to ^_____^; They need a headbanging smily.
