GetBackers Characters
Midou Ban
First impressions of Ban are generally that he is a rude person and has a great sense of pride. With his unruly hair (He's often called "Urchin Head") and sunglasses, people already judge him poorly (It doesn't help that he gives unflattering nicknames to almost anyone he meets, e.g. monkey trainer [Shido] and thread spool [Kazuki]). But he is actually a great guy with a strong sense of leadership and a very talented person. He is one quarter German and he's the grandchild of the "Last Witch of the 20th Century".Amano Ginji
He's the current partner of Ban Mido and was once the fearsome "Lightning Emperor" and the leader of a gang called "The Volts" in the Limitless Fortress. He received the title "Raitei" (literally, "Lightning Emperor") because of his ability to control electricity. This control grants him several unique abilities such as amazing regenerative power as well as the ability to become a human magnet and battery. Despite Ginji's dark past, his demeanor is one of an unassuming, energetic, and friendly boy with a strong sense of justice. He makes friends easily, often without trying - and is trusting and open to an almost naive extent. But when exposed to remnants of his past, he has a tendency to revert to his darker "Raitei" persona. For comical purposes, he also turns into a droopy chibi, most likely designed after a tare panda. He's frequently beaten up by Ban (comically) for doing stupid things.Shido Fuyuki
First introduced as the Beastmaster, he has the ability to control animals, although perhaps it should be better stated that he asks them for favors as he views animals as his friends. Once Volts disbanded, Shido left the Infinity Fortress to make a living outside, like Ginji. After reconciling with Ginji (whom he felt had betrayed Volts by leaving Mugenjou), Shido took a cue from the Get Backers and started his own retrieval service - occasionally aided by Emishi. He is very independent and cold to others. Even though his powers allow him to control animals, he considers them friends, and tries to protect them as they do him. He eventually ends up living with Madoka Otowa, and he has an ongoing rivalry with Ban (His nickname for Ban is "snake b*****d", while Ban's retort is often "saru-mashi" [monkey boy] or "pimp" [due to his stay with Madoka]).Kazuki Fuuchouin
Kazuki is the scion of the noble Fuuchouin family, and his fighting abilities derive from the family school, which emphasizes on grace(麗). He is graceful and charming, and is often mistaken for a woman because of his long hair and feminine face. But when angered, his fury is such that his other title is "Terrible Prince". He's also one of the characters who's freqently drawn in chibi form.Himiko Kudo
She once worked with Ban Mido as a thief in the pre-GetBackers days, along with her older brother Yamato (who may or may not actually be related to her by blood). When Yamato was 28 years old, he was alone with Ban in their house so that they might face his "Voodoo Child mirror" (Himiko was sent out to buy a cake.) As a Voodoo Child, if one of two halves dies, both perish. Ban realises this too late when his "Snake Bite" killed Yamato's other half. When Himiko came back with the cake, she saw Ban's hand covered with Yamato's blood. Since that day, she has held a grudge against Ban. Occasionally an enemy, but more frequently an ally, Himiko has mixed feelings for Ban, whom she sees is a good person, but cannot reconcile this with her brother's killer. On Ban's part, he treats Himiko more like a little sister (His nickname for her is "washing board"). But recently, his care for her seems to be exceeding that of an older brother.Makubex
Found in a sack as a child, only his last name, 間久部(Makube), is known (it was written on the bag). As time went on, he was discovered to be somewhat of a genius, capable of manipulating computers to do whatever he pleased. After a while, he was rechristened MakubeX, the 'x' symbolizing an unknown variable. During the 'Infinity Fortress' arc, the GetBackers are hired to retrieve the mysterious 'IL' from him. It is later discovered that IL is in fact an implosion lens, one of the most crucial parts of a nuclear weapon. At a young age, MakubeX had discovered that all actions in Infinity Fortress were in fact controlled by the 'god' of Babylon Tower, the top area of the fortress. Realizing this, MakubeX decided to give the god an edict: Turn back time to the time of the rule of Volts, or Infinity Fortress will be destroyed. MakubeX worked together with Kakei Sakura very closely to create his bomb. In the manga, it is noted that he, along with Ginji, are the "Children of Babylon City's God". He has also recently discovered his own latent special powers in the Lost Time arc. During his losing battle with Sakura, MakubeX was able to manipulate Mugenjou's virtual space at will using an "Omega Theorem" without the use of his trusty computer. It is then that MakubeX realizes how he must be a virtual program part and parcel of Mugenjou itself. Knowing this, MakubeX attempted to sacrifice himself to the Archives and erase its memory bank and AI from within - much like a computer virus. However, he was stopped by Ban, saying that Makubex's loss would serve no purpose but to further enrage Ginji/Raitei into destroying Mugenjou and everyone in it as well.Natsumi Mizuki
A 17-year-old high school student, Natsumi was Ban and Ginji's client at the beginning of the anime who then came to work at the Honky Tonk as a part-time waitress. In the anime, she has amazing ping-pong skills and even once takes on one of the Get Backers' clients while they are busy with another case (despite her lack of skill at anything besides table tennis, shogi, and cooking. Notable here is that she chose to wear an outfit consisting of Ban's shirt and glasses, and Ginji's pants and gloves for the case.) Sort of the GetBackers' unofficial groupie, Natsumi is very devoted to Ban and Ginji, often worrying about their welfare and staying up late at the Honky Tonk to welcome them back from a mission (This is also seen in the MV of the first ending theme in the anime, although the duo were just away to get groceries on a rainy day.Hevn
Codename of the buxom and enterprising young woman who is at times an ally to the Get Backers - and sometimes at odds with them. She is a "chuukaiya" (仲介屋) or negotiator, a person who mediates jobs between high-paying clients and retrievers (such as the Getbackers or Shido). In the manga, she is most known for her excessively revealing outfits (which Ban tends to take advantage of to cop a feel) and her sly, working-woman attitude. In the anime, she is gratuitously more clothed. She's also fond of trading barbs with Himiko about her lack of figure - but in reality, Hevn respects Himiko for her spunk and professionalism and their catfights merely reflect their competitiveness as two very capable women working in the dangerous underground.Akabane Kurodou
Akabane works as a "Transporter" ("hakobiya" in Japanese), a job where he is paid to escort things to a certain location. Entertainment is his main goal, not money, and the jobs he takes are chosen exclusively for amusement purposes. He likes to decapitate his enemies while engaging them in battle, a practice that many of the other characters see as going too far. His first encounter with the GetBackers was when he was on duty in the "Platinum Melon" arc. He fought with Amano Ginji and lost to him (Discovering that Akabane hides his scapels within his body, Ginji used his electomagnetic powers to pull all of them out of his body in one shot.). Since then, he has shown a lot of interest in fighting again with Amano Ginji and Midou Ban.Juubei Kakei
Known as "Tobari no Juubei" (飛針の十兵衛, or "Juubei of the Flying Needles"), Kakei Jubei is a formidable ally of the GB duo. For anyone who wishes to do Fuchouin Kazuki harm, more often than not, they'll have to get past this fearless warrior first. The heir to a clan that has served the Fuuchouins since time immemorial, he and Fuchouin Kazuki were childhood friends. When Kazuki left Mugenjou (Infinity Fortress), Juubei remained, and they eventually met in battle during the IL retrieval, at which point Juubei lost his eyesight. However, in the aftermath of the battle, they were reconciled and have remained close ever since. It is often speculated (both by fans and characters) that the two are lovers, and Ayamine has spoken positively of this idea in his "freetalks". Kakei Sakura is his older sister and he comes to her defence if she's threatened.Haruki Emishi
ne of the followers of Volts in Infinity Fortress. He was known as the "Bloody Joker" (鮮血の道化師) because he is always trying to make jokes to amuse other people (many times unsuccessfully). Also, his skills in combat mean that he is often covered in the blood of his enemies after battles. (In fact, Fuyuki Shido once commented that if his will becomes stronger, his might is actually on par with the 4 Kings of VOLTS.) Emishi's weapon is a long whip woven from the hair of the women of his people, which he handles very well. He went under the rule of Makubex after VOLTS broke up and fought the retrievers of IL in the Infinity Fortress. He is the only living male descendant left from the ancient Western Chinese desert kingdom of Loulan (Rouran). He is also an admirer and good friend of Shido.Kyoji Kagami
A resident of Babylon City (the topmost tower of Mugenjou), Kagami came down to the lower town to "observe" the retrievers of "IL". Currently, he is in possession of Himiko and is awaiting her seventeenth birthday when she will become a key he can use to re-enter Babylon City. He also intends to marry Himiko, claiming to love her. However, he may have a more sinister plan at hand: He once commented, "...And your (Himiko's) heart will be mine!" It should be noted that at the beginning of the Voodoo Child arc, Himiko had a dream of Ban ripping her heart out. His favourite activity is to observe the actions of his opponents, hence his title The Observer.Sakura Kakei
The older sister of Juubei Kakei, and perhaps Makubex's most loyal follower. She remained in Infinity Fortress after the breakup of Volts, where she assisted Makubex to restore order and bring the IL to fruition. Sakura fights using cloth, which she seems to control via telekinesis; although she is a skilled fighter, she does not often use her skills violently, preferring diplomacy to force. To MakubeX, Sakura is a sister-mother figure.Madoka Otowa
A child prodigy and extremely talented violinist. Though she is blind, she has amazing hearing abilities. She hired the GetBackers for a job once to get back her stolen Stradivarius violin. She has a seeing eye dog named Mozart who also protects her when she's in danger. Eventually, she becomes Shido's girlfriend.Clayman
An art collector (or art thief, depending on who you talk to). She is a great fan of art masterpieces and she opened a gallery where the public can view beautiful paintings that seem to have been drawn after the artists' deaths. (In the manga, it's revealed that these paintings were painted by her medium mother while possessed by the spirits of the dead artists.) Clayman sometimes gives retrieval jobs to the Get Backers (One of these jobs is to retrieve the arms of the Venus de Milo statue. Upon hearing that the arms had been found, Clayman hired the GB duo to retrieve the arms, fearing that it's true beauty would be lost if the arms were reattached to the statue).Ren Radou
Radou Gen's 'granddaughter'. She, too, was adopted by Gen much like MakubeX was but she hasn't displayed any special powers. Ren likely does legwork and odd jobs for her grandfather, such as gathering all the pharmaceutical ingredients Gen needs for his medicines and mapping the sections of Mugenjou's Lower Town. Despite being of the tomboyish sort, Ren nevertheless has special affection for Kazuki, who she saved with an elixir after his first encounter with Juubei. Wanting to follow Kazuki out into the outside world after the IL mission, to her horror, Ren discovers she is physically unable to, leading her to question her own existence. In the "Get Back the Lost Time" arc, she guides Shido and Kazuki to the entrance of the Beltline.Takuma Fudou
- Also known as "Fudou the Enlightened" (サトリの不動), Fudo is a blood-lusting borderline psychopath who will steamroll over anyone getting in the way of his "throbbing desire" to see Ban dead. In fact, his need for revenge is so one-track-minded that he only accepts an invitation from MakubeX to set the IL plan in motion - on the condition that he is fitted with a robotic arm and that he gets to kill Ban. Ban and Fudou's history is vague; the only thing known is that they had encountered each other pre-GetBackers as rival thieves and that somewhere along the way, Ban had managed to rip Fudou's left arm off. It isn't an understatement to say Fudou has been obsessed with vengeance ever since, stalking Ban and Ginji through both "Early Days"/"Birth" Arcs (where Ginji manages to defeat him by calling on a bolt of lightning) and even going so far as to keep the mummified remains of his arm with him always. A formidable foe with incredible strength and battle skills, Fudou is further aided by his powers of precognition - albeit only from one to three seconds in the future. This gives him the ability to see and anticipate his opponent's moves before they strike.
