I thought it might be interesting to have a discussion about dreams in here. At first I thought I'd stick just to night-dreams, but since so many people have trouble remembering them I decided to add in daydreams because sometimes those can be amusing to hear about.
Anyway, I've been told that I have very odd dreams. Apparently you're not supposed to have sound in your dreams. I do. One time, I had a dream that was a musical. Every word in it was sung. I can recall all of the tunes, though the scenes are a little shady (it's been over a year since I had it).
I've also dreamt in subtitles, though I have a suspicion that had to do with my newfound obsession with anime at the time.
One way I dream, though, is interesting (to me). The dream will be in two layers, like you'd have two windows open on your computer. One will be the images of the dream. The other will be a book where the words are printed as the people in the dream speak. Once, a guy decided to not say something after it was already written. In the book part of the dream, those words were crossed out with a red pen, and then the writing resumed. O.o That's only happened once, though.
So... discuss dreams of any sort you've had, and how they may contribute to your writing. ^_^

I actually remembered one of my dreams last night. It doesn't make a lot of sense and I don't know how it might relate to my writing, but I guess I'll leave that part open to discussion. It involved church and my church friends. For some reason we were doing something for the church service and goofing around and having a lot of fun. I'd like to mention that it was also my preacher that starting the goofing around.

How were you guys goofing around?
I've noticed that a lot of times I'll have weird dreams when I'm obsessed with something. So... obsessed with anime? I'll have dreams in subtitles. Obsession with Phantom of the Opera? *Guilty ^^;* Then dreams about the Phantom. That sort of thing.

It was just little things like pushing each other a little so they about fall off the stairs we're standing on and just laughing the whole time. I'm not even sure what the laughing was about.

Hmm... I have dreams I can usually never remember, until what happens in them happens in real life. Then I can remember the dream, but only for like 5 seconds. Deja vu is very much present in my life. I guess that's how I write experiences for characters in my fiction (or did). There's always something secret that they're hiding even though they don't know what it is ^_^ Very mysterious. I don't write mystery, though. More fantasy and lots of deep thinking that doesn't make sense until the reader thinks the same way. Lots of symbolism, too...

Same here about the deja vu thing. It's one very vivid flash that I can recall, of one particular second or something... deja vu is funny, though sometimes it really creeps me out...

My dreams are so insane I can't even begin to describe them. But my daydreams, which is my life, is the plot for the story I'm writing. Which, I'm happy I decided to try to write it down, because now writing is so much easier for me. I used to struggle horribly, as in last year. sweatdrop

Hm... I just remembered something. I sometimes just dream music. I don't see anything, I just hear music. One time I composed an entire symphony... it was pretty sweet. I know that there's no symphony like that, because uhh... I don't listen to that many. I only know the symphonies that I've played in orchestra... Also, I practiced piano in my dream once. I just saw the notes floating in front of me and I remembered them. I had never played that piece before, but my friend had played it before, and I'd seen the music. When I woke up, I went to my piano to see if I could really play it, and I COULD. Better than my friend, too ^_^ But it was a pretty easy piece by Mendelssohn, called "Lost Happiness." The weird thing is... I've never composed a thing by myself (AKA I don't think I have the skill to) and I don't have a photographic memory that would enable me to do those things, but I did and that's what's so remarkable about my dreams.

i am falling....jsut falling in such darkness that one feels that they are falling into the belly of some great beast that could eat the stars. at first, there is no up, no down, no left, and no right, but soon i gently land upon a huge map of what looks to be the universe. the only marks that i recognize are the constilations and some of the stars, planets, and galaxies. only a bit of a ways from me, there is a small tea table painted in silver with a dark umbrella and two silver chairs that bore curved arms. upon closer observation, i see that there are two places set; two plates, two cups, two napkins, and two sets of utensils. there is no tea in the cups, but in a large tea pot that rested next to a plate of some unrecognizable pasteries. i slowly and catiously sat and waited for whoever i was waiting for, seeing as there were two places set and i thought it to be rude to start ahead on tea when i never liked tea and pasteries that i couldn't name. it wasn't long after i sat that the map rippled and the table and everthing on the table started to flout away. the chairs jumped, knocking me out of the one that held me, and followed the other items. even as i was knocked loose, i never hit the maps hard surface, but floated as well while i watched the figures on the map pop and bulge and spread around her as if they where becoming returning to their true positions in the universe. slowly, one by one, my body would jult and fall onto random planets and stars, and only have time to look shortly around before i fell through that planet or star and went on to my next unknown destination. it was only after i started to continueously fall in that lonely darkness that i awoke to a new mornings sun light that flooded through my tiny window. such light brought no comfort to the silence and clinging lonelyness that i still felt so long afterward...

ummm....one of my dreams was that I was walking over to the store r something, and then I saw my best friend walking down the sidewalk on the other side of the street. Soo I walked over to say Hi, seeing as my friend and I have not been in contact lately, and when I saw her, she scared the s**t out of me because she was dirty, drunk and/or high, and pregnant. She did not even know who I was. It really scared me, and I've had this about 5 or 6 times....weird, yes?

Who ever said you can't dream in sound, or colour, or that you can't recieve injuries from dreams is full of CRAP. Dreams are messages from your subconscious. Sometimes it's just the wandering meanderings of your brain as it does something akin to defragmenting a computer. It sorts through what you've been thinking lately and converts it to long-term memory.
The brain can not differentiate between seeing an object and remembering an object. That is why dreams are so vivid and real, while you're asleep. Some dreams are not sourced by your brain at all, but by your subconscious which is more in tune with the world. It will sometimes make you dream of seemingly random things, but then you experience these things within the next week or so. Either it's predicting these things, or your thinking of them is causing them to happen.
One time I had a vague dream of some kind of lion soaring through a battle. Then, within the week, I read the Chronicles of Narnia, and there was a battle scene exactly like it. As well, I had a dream of a folded piece of paper, zig-zagged in just so a way. The next day, I realized that I had folded it and used it as a bookmark.
But some dreams are just pure random. One time I was running down the street of a city at night. There were no stars, and all the buildings were green and twisted and looked bumpy with mold. The street was navy blue cobblestones and I was running with my dad. We were both running from something. Ahead of us, the right side of the street sunk into the ground, exposing a cavern full of lava. The sunken sidewalk served as a ramp for hamburger cars (Yes, you read that right) to drive up and add to the multitudes of dinosaurs (Yes...) that were chasing me and my dad. But, up ahead, there was a section on the right side of the street that was sectioned off with yellow tape. Somehow I knew it was a safe place and my dad and I ran for it. Just as we went inside the yellow tape, the dinosaurs and hamburger cars just went past. That's when I woke up and ran crying to my mom. What? I was, like, seven years old?
At that age I was also afraid of volcanos. I always had dreams that two of them would erupt right in front of my house, and they always had this white ring around the cone. Sometimes I dreamed that lava was slowly flowing from the direction of my parents' room to my room, burning down the house. These kind of dreams upset me, because I'd always be trying to find the cats to save them.
I also had this one dream that wasn't sad or anything. Just crazy. I'd be walking home from school, and go around the corner of my house. I'd see my cat Halley, and I'd go, "Hey Halley." I walk past her, and open the front door. I'd let Halley outside while saying, "Hey Halley." As I look into the porch, I'd see her eating catfood, and I'd say, "Hey Halley." By then, I got a bit suspicious. I take off my shoes and go up the steps to put my backpack down, and there, in the living room, is something like fifty Halleys all doing something different and Halleyish.
Yeah.
