Meeooow! Just a quick tutorial on the different blend modes you can use in photoshop. I'll just go over the basics.

Multiply - Multiplies the color on the bottom layer with the color on the top layer. Very good when you want to darken a color or thicken a line

Screen- The inverse of Multiply. Useful when lightening colors or thinning lines.

Overlay- Perserves the highlights and shadows of the base color while mixing in the top color. For example, you overlay textures.

Soft Light - Similar to shining a diffused spotlight on all the layers below it. (Camera lingo, couldn't think of a better way to say it)

Hard Light- Simila to shining a harsh spotlight on all the layers below it. Basically, white in hard light will be light, black will be dark.

Color Dodge- Lightens the color on the bottom layer to reflect the color on the top layer.

Color Burn- Darkens the color on the bottom layer to reflect the color on the top layer.

Darken- Displays either the color on the top layer or the color on the bottom layer - whatever is darker.

Lighten- Displays either the color on the top layer or the color on the bottom layer - whatever is lighter

Difference- Subtracts the color on the layer with less brightness from the one that has more brightness.

Exclusion- Like difference but has less contrast.

Hue- Replaces the hue of the top layer with the hue of the bottom one.

Saturation- Replaces the saturation of the top layer with the saturation of the bottom one.

Color- Colorizes the bottom layer with the color on the top layer.

Luminosity- changes the bottom layer's luminence with the top.

This has been taken in part from the book "Adobe InDesign" by Sandee Cohen (A book I had to read for GYE, which has a section on Photoshop) and from personal experiences, meow.

It helps to use blend modes in art, as they give an interesting touch to the picture. Have fun experimenting, as most of this is probably gibberish if you've never used blend modes. sweatdrop
