As someone who is stuck in a rather horrible AP Euro class that completely ignores everything that came before the Papal Schism (sp?), I feel the need to be random here. That and this forum seems dead.
What is your favourite ancient civilization and why?
As embarassed as I am to say this, I'll always be a bit of an Egypt nut. It started me on my love of ancient civs and writing, as well as mythology and all that other fun stuff like Shakespeare and real literature. That and they had pretty good women's rights for that time period. And not to forget TWTID. Because TWTID controls my life...

I think that my favourite civilization would have to be either the Mayans or the Celts.
I've always been fascinated by the Mayans - mainly their architecture - for as far back as I can remember, and they had really interesting astronomy and astrology theories, especially for how limited their resources were.
The Celts were just cool. Sad though I am to say it, I don't know all that much about them, but what I do is attention-holding. That and I love Ireland - them having kick-a** sport horses. biggrin

Francia: The Successors of RomeIt's great, it's huge, has info from ancient Egypt to the Normans to the Americas to the Sangoku. I love it. The author is a bit heavy-handed with his theory of history, but the facts are there in black and white WITH, wonder of wonders, heavy annotation and citations!

I've always been preferential to the Ancient Romans. Not sure why. Just am.

I'm sorta partial to the ancient Mesopotamians.
Oh, and Iron Age western Europe.
No real reason, I guess.

The Celts have always held a special place in my scholarly heart. I suppose being Irish might be part of that.
Aside from the Celts, I am a great admirer of the Mesopotamians, the founders of civilization.
Many other civilizations, namely the Persians, Ancient Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks are all great but horribly overrated. I think it's mostly because they were so widespread that people focus on them. In the case of the Egyptians, however, I think that one's more or less their archetectural achievements.

Ancient Egypt, without a doubt. I very nearly went to University to become an Egyptologist, I love it so much.
Although to be honest, as their society spread over several thousand years, my favourite period of their history is about the eighteenth dynasty, with the rule of Seti I, and Ramses II, or Ramses the Great. This was before the advent of the Romans or the arrival of the Greeks, and I really appreciate that this was one of the last periods before their culture got diluted by everyone elses.
Gotta love Egypt. I'm working on learning hyrogliphs - the Ancient dynasty writing is actually easier to learn because symbols stand for whole words, instead of parts of words. biggrin

Republic of Rome (of course) and Carthage the Pseudo-empire. Those two just have some of the most rich history of the ancient/classical world. Come on, Punic Wars!
