I really don't think that whether James Potter had been nice to Snape or not would have made a difference in how he is. He loved the Dark Arts regardless of what James did, he came from a broken home (recall what Harry saw in the penseive in Snapes office with the father and mother arguing), he was taunted by lots of kids at Hogwarts, not just James. The actions of one kid in Hogwarts isn't going to make a difference as to whether someone becomes a Death Eater or not. Sure, James was popular, but not influential enough to turn someone evil.

Additionally, I have yet to be thoroughly convinced that Snape is evil.

Snape? Well, i'm not sure....Rowling sets a lot in store by names. And "Severus" means to cut (or somehting to that effect at least) so maybe it's got something to do with...i dont know. I looked up "Snape" once, too. It's got something to do with angles and stuff. I dont know. I doubt he'd kill Dumbledore if he was good, but.....hmm....I think he's good, just 'cause Harry's thought he's bad for so long. make sense?

True, But still.... he DID have a bad childhood and all.... That could explain some things.....

I agree though-- James alone could not have driven him to hatred. (Although, yes, it could play a role in him hating Harry.) But that's besides the point, I mean even if he didn't hate James he's have to hate Harry simply because he's *somewhat* on the Dark Lord's side.
