Novels are good, short stories are great but come on you can't live without plays. From Shakespeare to Fred Carmichael you can't go wrong. Brilliance and wit definetly comes out of the work of Oscar Wilde in the comedy The Importance of Being Earnest. I haven't read or performed any of his other writings but I look forward to. Anyone else know of him?

My school did The Importance of Earnest as one of our school plays this year, which started me on an Oscar Wilde kick. I read A Woman of No Importance, Lady's Windermere's Fan, and Salome before reading The Picture of Dorian Gray and becoming disgusted with Wilde. The plays were good--although the some of the plot elements were repeated from play to play, something which began to bug me. And The Picture of Dorian Gray was excellent in its own way as well, or it wouldn't have bothered me so much.

My friend was recently in a production of The Importance of Being Earnest. I wasn't too excited to go, but another friend of mine I knew loved Oscar Wilde, so I asked if she wanted to go with me. Of course, she was ecstatic and told me how excited she was to go see it.

Still, I wasn't too happy.

Until the play started. And I practically peed my pants laughing so hard.

But what kind of sucked was that a lot of people in the theater didn't get all of the jokes and were just giving me this "What the hell is so funny?" look.

Hmm, loudest laughter in the auditorium!

I haven't read Earnest, however, I have seen it performed. Oscar Wilde is a terrific writer, in my opinion, especially for comedy. Though not on the same level as Aeschylus, I would say that he is deffinitely worth viewing.

It's not a play, it's a novel. But either way, it's very good.

Anyone read (or seen) any Maugham?
