Yes, I realize this is a guild about tats and piercings, and I absolutely LOVE it. But Im just wondering why people get their tongue pierced? I mean the people on here that have it done, look beautiful with it, but the risks (to me) arent worth it.

The tongue has major blood vessels in it, and if the piercer happens to hit one, or if it gets infected, there could be serious damage. For one you could be paralyzed, but on the worse note, you can die.

An infection can be easily spread through your tongue due to the vessels I mentioned, which can cause bleeding in the brain.

So my question is:

Is it really worth the risk?

As far as I've been told, yes there are major blood vessels in the tongue, but they're very large and very prominent, and therefore every easy to avoid. Any piercer worth their autoclave should be able to avoid such an obvious target. 3nodding

Also, the chance of infection occuring in the mouth is very low (mostly because people aren't able to put their filthy fingers on it, unlike other piercings), so the chance of an infection travelling to your brain from your tongue is even lower. Yes, there is the possiblity that you could have some complications, but thats the risk you take with any piercing... and one should be willing to put the time and effort into aftercare to avoid those complications before they get pierced.

The number of fatalities or paralyzation from tongue piercings must be lower than you're assuming... I can see that you've done some research, but I think a WEE bit more might be advisable. Go and talk to a professional piercer and see how much of your information is urban myth as opposed to fact. wink

this is one of the best reasons to go to a piercer who is well established and who has done alot of piercings.. the more expiri;knced,, the less probable it is that they will screw up.

Aftercare is one of the biggest problems because people who dont know enough will go out get pierced, come home, and forget everything that the piercer told them about cleanliness.

If you are going to get piercings.. be willing to put the nessacary time iinto them.

Mesic and Brainfog are very very right!
It is very very easy for an trained piercer to see the vain, in fact I bet you can spot it yourself in the mirror, just lift your tongue and it's kinda near the center.
and the aftercare is the easiest of all piercings, mouthwash after anything dirty (eating, smoking, etc.) and brush your teeth. If your a clean person who goes to a professional that has experience with tongue piercings than things will be fine.
Also, I know someone who did go to an idiot to get pierced and her vain was hit and she lost some blood but she is none the less fine.
I've seen tattoos get pretty vicious though.
afterall, it's not much worse than:
arrow getting my traegus pierced and the guy saying I could got deaf and burst vessels in my brain.
arrow or my cartilege causing my ear to fall off, or the gun blowing the back of my ear out (I didn't know that one before hand otherwise I woulda used the needle)
arrow And when they pierce your eyebrow that needle is really really close to your eyeball if something were to bump it, say goodbye to your eye.
arrow or taking out your lip piercing can cause your lip to cave in.
The fact of the matter is, creating an open wound in your body is gonna be a risky and dangerous thing, but when you are smart about it and choose a professional and follow their instructions then every thing will be fine.
Also when you compare the technology of today with that of the tribes that did it before us, we are way better off.

You point out that you could die from an infection of a tongue piercing...yeah its possible. But its also possible to die from an infection after scraping my knee on the pavement.

People exagerate the risks. Yeah there are risks nobody denies that. But there are risks in everything.

It's always worth it .The risk is minimal in a controled invironment. self piercers that use non sterile needles are the ones most at risk. No autoclave, no safety seal, no f*uck*ng way!!!

i apologise for posting before reading previous posts, but paralysis cant happen from a piercing gone wrong.

the only piercing (or one of) that can seriously harmful, is a sub-clavical, it is the only one that actually pierces into the main body cavity, leaving you open to infection that normally would be fairly tame, but could make you deathly ill

so yeah

dont quote me on all of this, this is just what i read on the internet, and through trusted sources, so blah

No offence, but in order for a tongue infection to kill you, you would have a be a complete idiot not to notice it. There are several sings of a sever infection and they should be noticed quite easily. If a infection starts always call your piercer also you may need to seek medical attention to get a prescription if the infection is bad enough.

And for hitting blood vessels. The blood vessels in the tongue are very prominent and any good experienced piercer should be able to find and avoid them.

As long as you know what to look for Touges are super easy! If a piercer does not look under your touge first, walk away!
