Whether you realize it or not, everyone has an ideal reader. That is, they picture a certain person reading what you're writing, and you imagine their reactions and such. It can be someone online, a friend, a family member... anybody. I suppose you could use yourself, if you never show your stuff to anyone, but then why would you be a member of this guild if that was the case? smile
My ideal reader is a friend. I show her my stuff that I write in a notebook, and when I picture people reading my stuff I usually picture her. When I get the predicted reaction right, I'm like "SCORE!" ^^;
What about you guys?

I am a grossly annoying critic of my own work. Perhaps it is my own tendency to keep on second guessing myself but I find that over time my ideas have become more coherent and structured. I am beginning to feel like a well-matured piece of moulding cheese. blaugh

Haha. I notice that if I watch/read something- especially something I love- I start criticizing it.
"This part is too long." Or "That is SO cliche..."
I still love what I'm reading/watching, but it... gah. I guess I'm supposed to be an editor. *Shrugs*

I used to keep on my writings to myself, but lately I've let my latest work out and made copies for my closest friends. I like it when I feel that I'm my worst critic because that means as long as I like it everyone else will probably like it.

Hmm... I usually write for classes, so my intended audience is always a teacher. I always want to wow 'em ^_^
I'm like Daykurfin, I'm my worst critic, but I don't like it when people say something's really good when I don't think it is just because I know I can do better. Only when I push myself to the extreme do I produce something I think is really good, and I only think that for a certain amount of time that it takes for me to get even better. My work is usually always a work in progress. The ideas stay the same though; it's just the way I write them and how complex they get.

I actually have two ideal readers; my friend and my current English teacher. Said teacher is really encouraging, and I can't stand the thought of letting her down. She's my class Ideal Reader. My friend has to put up with everything else. ^^;

I read from the Stephen King book "On Writing" you should write once with the door closed, then edit with the door open. What do you guys think about that? I generally show as I go, myself...

Oh, I read that book! It was very entertaining ^_^
Yeah, I agree with the King quote, but you have to make sure that you have all your ideas out and you are DEFINITELY just editing instead of developing lots of new ideas and shtuff. Like, that's not a BAD thing to do while editing, but if you let people read your stuff while you're editing and there's not enough stuff in your writing, it can get too easily influenced by others. I like to some part of my writing to reflect me, thank you very much...

I can feel if I'm writing something good- it flows out almost entirely on its own, even if the beginning's a bit rocky. Before I know it, I'll be on chapter three when I only intended to write the first chapter.

At least, I can tell if I'M going to like it. Obviously I won't know if anyone else will until I show it to someone, but usually I get a positive reaction on a piece if I also felt it was good.
