Money's tight but you need a good bass? Yamaha does pretty well on a small budget. Squire is pretty much a standard. And I think Ibanez has some good ones for cheap.

I kid you not, those things are like tanks.. you can throw them down the stairs and still pick them up and play them like nothing ever happened, though I wouldn't recommend trying that. razz

No, that means i agree the c**k sucking lama means i approve... dramallama But yeah, Yamaha seems to be a pritty solid brand...litterly. Squire is my personol fav for beginers, i personly think its the best deal for the price.

Squire is pretty damn good in that you can play pretty much any style of music with them like Fenders, which is great for beginners. As for Yamaha's being tough, I have actually dropped mine twice pretty damn hard and not put a dent in it.

I'd go with Peavey's Millenium series basses. don't pay more than 270 for one. Also, I wouldn't get squire if it's made in China. They suck a**. Yamaha is a good choice, though. What I like about the Peavey is you have a very comfortable neck (much like a Fender J-bass but smaller) and a cool "flame maple" top. They have a P-J pickup configuration (P-bass style in the neck position, J-bass style in the bridge), too, which is pretty cool. comes in 4 or 5-string. and no, I'm not a Peavey rep.

Scijad and no, I'm not a Peavey rep. Aww.. and here I thought you were just about to try and sell me the extended warranty. (j/k) smile
Seriously though, I don't currently have any complaints about the Peavy brand as far as I can think of. So right now, Yamaha and Peavy both sound like good solid purchases.

Me and a buddy got our basses at the same time. He got a Yamaha and I got an Ibanez. Ibanez is a great quality bass and I've never had a problem with it. They have a starter pack that I went for and I haven't had any problems yet, of course I have purchased a few upgrades since then, namely a bigger more powerful amp. Yamaha is great too, but I didn't like the knobs on their starter model. I always thought mine looked classier then his... anyway, the upside to his is 24 frets instead of 22. Squire is a subdivision and just isn't made to the same exacting standards as regular Fender's, which is why the price range is lower. I say Ibanez or Yamaha unless you're gonna whip out the big bucks for a Fender.

These are all good ideas
What I would do is this:
Go to a music store( I recamend Guitar Center, Sam Ash, Or equivalent) and play the basses they have in your price range, whatever feels good in our hands and has a good tone, get. Also, play basses out of your price range, for future reference.
