Prologue

It has been seventeen long years since Squall and his friends travelled through the compression of time in order to battle with the evil sorceress Ultimecia. It was a long and hard fight; however with courage and determination they were triumphant and time slowly began to return to normal.

It was agreed upon the party's return to normal time that Balamb Garden would return to where it had originally taken root to continue its work training SeeDs. Regardless of the fact that Ultimecia had been defeated by Squall and his party, thus eliminating the threat of the sorceress once and for all…or at least that's what they believed.

Now SeeD’s are trained to be ‘hired mercenaries’ their jobs ranging from simple recon to political assassinations. And while peace has been generally enjoyed by all around the word for the last seventeen years, an evil force which goes beyond Ultimecia is beginning to disturb the world with its presence.

Chapter One

“Right then Zann, show the class…” Zell was stopped mid sentence as the young man known as Zann moved quietly to the front of the class where the instructor stood, his short blonde hair flashing briefly in the dim lighting of the training centre. His eyes were constantly described “Hard as ice” though this description didn’t seem to match his personality at all.

“What you’ve got…” Zell finished lamely while pointing as a sluggishly advancing Grat. Zann, with a quick snake-like movement had drawn his gunblade and held it low as he began his steady march towards the offending Grat.

The Grat lunged quickly forward towards Zann with one barbed tentacle, a horrible screeching emitting from it as it sensed a possible easy victory. It was at the last possible second that Zann rolled quickly to the right; giving the illusion that he had vanished into thin air.

The Grat let out a shocked screech as its barbed tentacle slammed into nothing but the hard ground. Allowing the Grat no time to recover Zann was already sprinting toward it, his eyes constantly watching the remaining tentacles carefully.

There were only a few feet left between the Grat and Zann remaining, time began to slow down as he began to execute the last stages of his move. Gripping the gunblade tighter in his hands he began to slow as the Grat’s body filled his view. Taking one last step Zann quickly spun on his heel and sprung into the air, his gunblade began its lighting fast spin around his shoulders.

The dull ‘clunk’ of the gunblade biting into the Grat's body was quickly followed up by the deafening roar of a gunshot. Zann landed with bent knees and with his back to the still quivering monster.

With an agonized screech the Grat lifted one barbed tentacle ready to strike, the barb-like whip began its rapid descent…but never found its mark. The Grat began to slide horizontally in half; the top half hit the ground hard while the bottom half seemed to crumple slowly to the floor of the training centre. Its scream lost forever more.

Silence ruled over his fellow students, most of them not believing what they had just seen happen. Even the instructor was more than slightly impressed with the results. Zann said nothing as he sheathed his gunblade and rejoined the group. He found it slightly irritating that all his fellow students needed to stare at him like deer caught in the head lights of an oncoming transport.

“Thus concludes today’s lesson, Class dismissed” Zell shouted boisterously, his voice loud enough to ensure that the few T'Rexaurs which inhabited the Training centre heard him. Each class member gave Zann a final stare before departing in small groups.

“Zann. Just heard ‘bout your stunning lesson! Did you really cut that Grat in half? Must’ve been exciting huh?” Zann was brought back to reality as his friend Shari’s voice cracked through the main all of Garden like a thunderclap.

Shari was Zann’s closest friend in Garden, and perhaps the only one who could ever get him to smile… then again it wasn’t really hard as her happiness was contagious and she always went out of her way to make sure everyone was having a good time. People never really considered her a fighter of merit, convinced that anyone that happy must either be ditzy or insane. Zann was probably the only one besides the instructors who knew of her amazing fighting talents, and while it was true she preferred not to fight… she would fight if she had to and fight well at that.

“Hey Shari, Was instructor Tilmitt her usual bubbly self today?” Zann asked politely as Shari fell into step beside him.
“Yeah, but when is that ever different?” She countered
“I suppose you're right. So, what does the lovely Selphie have in store for the students of Garden?” Zann said with some light amusement in his voice, as they turned into the hallway leading to the cafeteria entrance.
“Well, the whole class ‘volunteered’ to help with the Garden Festival” Shari said while trying not to break out in laugher.

She only lasted two minutes before her laughter filled the hall, causing the heads of a few students to turn and glare at her for disturbing the calm silence of the passage.

To Zann, Shari’s laughter was like a silver bell ringing loudly on a cold, overcast day and it wasn’t long before he too began to laugh.
Their laughter lessened as they slipped into the back of the line which moved slowly towards where the cafeteria ladies worked tirelessly to provide students with meals from 6:00 am in the morning to 9:00 pm at night.
Roughly twenty minutes later the pair was only a few spaces back from the front of the line when Zann pulled out his wallet and checked how much Gil he had on hand.
“Can I get you anything?” He asked in a gentleman-like fashion which he was sure would catch Shari by surprise.
Shari raised her eyebrows at Zann’s last question but putting on her best face she grinned. “Why, you are just too kind to poor little me” She replied, trying to be as serious as possible but causing the both of them to break out in another fit of laughter.

The cafeteria ladies looked slightly amused when Zann and Shari reached the front of the line but said nothing. Zann paid for both their orders then made his way to where a table had opened up outside. “I thought some fresh air and sunlight would go well with lunch.” He said pleasantly over his shoulder as he stepped into the bright midday sun instantly feeling warmer than before.

~//~

It was very calming sitting outside with his friend enjoying a midday meal from the well respected cafeteria. The birds were singing songs full of the joys of flying and everywhere one looked they would see fellow students also enjoying meals in the company of their friends in the serenity of the out doors.

But the serenity was short lived. Zann had only just finished his soda when a nearby table disappeared with an almighty BANG! The sound echoed ominously throughout the plaza and caused the peace of the student body to transform very quickly into a surging mob of chaos as a few other tables disappeared shortly after the first one.

Zann wasn’t worried one bit. After being at Garden since the age of five, there was very little that happened around Garden that surprised him anymore. And disappearing tables definitely fell under that category.
Besides, Zann had a feeling that these disappearing tables were not due to ‘supernatural’ causes. They had the faint trademarks of a certain student with a goal to blow anything that wasn’t bolted down as high into the sky as she possibly could.

It was at that point that the student he had been thinking about made her presence known. She had a wide grin on her face as she watched the panicking student body, all the while trying to remain as innocent looking as possible. Needless to say.. Zann found her to be anything but innocent.

It took him only a couple of minutes to remember the female student’s name… Rhia Summers..
And substitute my own..."[~]

Chapters 2 and 3 ^^

Chapter Two

Rhia had long reddish brown hair flowing neatly down her back, however; the most noticeable trait about her was her pale violet eyes. A strong full metal staff could be seen poking over the top of her shoulder, a silent reminder to anyone that she did know how to fight.

~//~

Seifer happened to be walking past the hallway leading to the cafeteria when a couple of students came rushing out screaming hysterically, “Tables are vanishing into thin air!” and naturally, being the one in charge of keeping order in Garden he went to investigate; his two cronies Fujin and Raijin close behind.

“SILENCE!” Fujin yelled as the disciplinary trio arrived on the scene.

The plaza became as silent as death as it slowly registered that Seifer had arrived and it was not under happy circumstances.

It was the silence that broke Zann from his pondering. A few minutes ago the students had been screaming but now, all was silent, the students' eyes fixed on a whitish-blonde haired man in a gleaming white trench coat. Zann’s heart gave a jolt as he laid eyes upon the furious looking instructor.

It took Seifer Almasy but a moment to find the reddish-brown haired pain in the a** he knew was behind this mess. She was leaning against a tree and, he wasn't surprised at the fact that she was trying to look innocent.
Unfortunately for Zann and Shari they were sitting under the very same tree Rhia was leaning against.

Seifer cut through the masses of students with determined strides, his eyes locked on Rhia’s form as people melted out of his path.
“Ok Summers, I know you’re behind this! And believe me not even the burning pits of hell will save you from my wrath this time!” He fumed as he towered over the still calmly leaning Rhia their eyes locking in a ferocious clash of wills until finally, Rhia let her eyes drop slightly before putting her most charming smile on.
“But sir! Surely you don’t believe that I could be behind a matter as serious as this? Why, I happened to be sitting not far from here enjoying a well deserved lunch when the tables started vanishing into thin air. And, knowing how much you like order to be kept here in Garden I came to investigate.” Rhia told him carefully whilst gauging Seifer's mood, her smile making her look almost angelic.

Unfortunately for Rhia she had just finished her speech when the furniture started to reappear. The first table she had sent flying had finally succumbed to the strong pull of gravity and landed back where it had left not five minutes ago. Sadly, the table wasn’t quite in the same state as it had been when it disappeared from sight.

Pieces of broken wood scattered everywhere as the table exploded upon its impact with the ground of the plaza, causing Rhia to snigger uncontrollably.
“You really expect me to believe that story after all the years I’ve been your teacher?” Seifer asked arching an eyebrow at his student, her audacity infuriating him all the more.
“Of course I do.” Rhia replied as she finally regained control of herself. “After all, you can't REALLY prove it was me now can you sir? All you have is circumstantial evidence.”
“I don't need evidence Summers.” He growled back threateningly. “Because I know you all too well. Hasn't it ever occurred to you that one of the first rules of committing mayhem is to make yourself scarce after causing it?”
“What? And miss out on all the fun of watching the panic unfold?” Rhia snorted with contempt. “It's just a table...” Several crashes around the cafeteria announced the return of the rest of the dining furniture. “...Or five. Besides, did you notice that I didn't touch any of the chairs around them?”

Seifer smirked widely, he had her now, 'caught in bed with the smoking gun' as the saying went - and a confession to boot. “Yes, quite impressive Rhia, but not impressive enough to save you from detention.” he replied, almost purring with the satisfaction of catching her red handed.
As an afterthought Seifer looked around the plaza where the students were all watching in anticipation, after all there was nothing better than watching Seifer raking a student over the coals. “All right, I want everyone to clear the area.. Now! Any student who isn’t out of this place in ten seconds gets a detention!”

To emphasise his point, Raijin and Fujin each pulled out a pad of detention slips, their hands poised as they looked meaningfully at the crowd that had gathered. The sound of many footsteps filled the area as everyone suddenly found they had urgent business in other parts of Garden.

Zann didn’t need telling twice, quickly grabbing Shari by the wrist he left; the angry eyes of Seifer following his back until he had joined the crowd massing at the exit.

“Don’t even think about taking another step Summers. You and I have some things to discuss and I’d rather not take Garden apart piece by piece to find you now that I have you right where I want you.” Seifer said without even turning around.
Rhia rubbed her head guiltily, while straightening up from where she was about to take another step towards freedom. Busted. Well and truly.

~//~

“I thought my heart was going to stop right then and there when Seifer came over toward us.” Shari said with a nervous laugh, looking over her shoulder to ensure Seifer wasn’t within their general vicinity.
“I know what you mean; he does seem to have quite a demanding presence about him huh?” Zann replied quietly glad to be away from the situation in the cafeteria…and the imminent fireworks that Rhia was about to face.

“Hey, give that back!” The young and hurt voice of a junior class member pierced Zann’s thoughts like a burning knife, causing him to stop in his tracks to see what was going on. Curious to why Zann had stopped Shari backtracked to investigate the situation with him.

Anyone who had been in the cafeteria moments before would notice that the young man towering over the whimpering junior class member would appear to almost be exactly like the powerful Seifer. His name was Dias; he had short whitish blonde hair just like Seifer - and an attitude to match. Zann loathed him as he was constantly picking on everyone, convinced that he was the single greatest thing to happen to Garden since Squall became a SeeD.
But what really got Zann the most was the fact that he had started harassing junior members, and this was something he wasn’t going to allow Dias to get away with.

“Dias, leave him alone!” Zann snarled as he crossed the distance between them in a few strides, snatching the Triple Triad Card Dias was holding and returning it to the sobbing junior class member watching as he scampered off on his way. Zann received a heavy push from the well muscled boy called Kaze, one of Dias’s cronies, Suija, the only female close to Dias was about to follow up with a sharp slap across Zann’s face for interfering in their business when Dias raised a hand in a signal for her to stop.

“I don’t see how this involves you Zann.” Dias sneered with contempt, trying to push his way past Zann to pursue the quickly escaping junior class member.
Zann refused to budge staring into Dias’s eyes with a heated malice.
“You're wrong Dias, when you start picking on junior class members it’s anyone’s right to get involved. What’s the matter Dias? Has bullying those who are your age lost its thrill? Or is it that you're afraid that someone will finally stand up to you?” Zann spat at him, watching as Dias’s eyes flashed quickly to his before a malevolent grin spread across Dias’s face.
“You talk big Zann, but talk alone doesn’t win fights…”

Zann had no time to prepare for the punch that Dias aimed towards his unprotected chest. The punch didn’t hurt very much, but it did cause a considerable gap to open between Dias and himself.

Grunting, Zann quickly drew his gunblade and pounced across the gap, meeting Dias who had used the time after his punch to draw his own gunblade. Both men flicked rapid blows at each other, their blades flashing in an artistic yet deadly dance. Neither man’s defence faltered as each of them matched each other blow for blow. That is until Kaze absently allowed his heavy staff to ‘fall’ on top of Zann. Zann’s guard dropped only for a second, but it was enough for Dias to gain the upper hand. Sliding his blade down Zann’s he gave his wrist a quick twist and caused Zann’s blade to fly from his hand, leaving him disarmed and giving the Seifer-wannabe the sense of victory.

Dias slashed lazily at Zann, wanting to draw some of his blood to make his victory absolute and that much sweeter. Thinking fast Zann rolled forward quickly, sliding underneath the rapidly descending blade and coming to his feet just in front of the unprepared Dias.
The punch which Zann threw at Dias’s face travelled no more than a couple of feet but it had enough of his weight behind him to do some damage. The loud CRACK sung through the air as Zann’s fist smashed into Dias’s nose, causing him to fall backwards, tears pricking his eyes as the pain seared across his nerves.

Panting heavily Zann bent low and picked up his lost weapon, turning to ensure that Dias was down for the count before returning to Shari’s side, a small yet smug smile on his face. As the pair walked off, Zann looked over his shoulder to see Dias’s two goons lift him up by his shoulders and drag him towards the infirmary. “Nothing you didn’t deserve Dias” Zann mumbled before both him and Shari turned away and moved out of sight.

Chapter Three

The remainder of the day was a lot less eventful compared to what had happened earlier. *Bing… Bing… Bing!* the loud three chime bell echoed throughout Garden signalling attention for some announcements to be read.
“Good afternoon campers!” The distinctive voice of Irvine Kinneas piped out of the loud speakers around Garden.
“Firstly, a reminder from Instructors that Virtual home work may not be submitted for actual credit. Also we hope you’ve been training and studying really hard because the written test for the SeeD exam starts next week! So do yourself a favour by showing up to the study sessions the lovely Instructor Trepe will be holding throughout the week.” Smiles broke out around Garden as everyone listened to Irvine’s obvious flirting. The smiles grew wider as a loud THUMP cut across the PA system.
“Yes, thank you Irvine for that riveting announcement… As instructor Kinneas has stated I will be holding study sessions throughout the week in the second floor classroom for any student who feels they need a little more study before the big test. I hope to see most of you who are in my class attending… Especially if you’ve been absent frequently, Thank you all and enjoy your day” Quistis’s soft voice buzzed across the PA, causing her adoring fans to swoon with delight. Personally, it made Zann sick to look at them but he had to admit that he could do with some extra study before the exam; after all, he might convince Shari to join him. That way it wouldn’t be completely boring…

~//~

“I can’t believe you dragged me along to this Zann” Shari protested loudly as they walked into the second floor classroom. The thing, which Zann noticed first, was perhaps the amount of students who had actually showed up to the study session. Seats were filling up fast, the seats in the far back already crammed full of students. Taking an empty seat at the front of the room Zann amused himself by looking around at the students who had come to ‘Study’. There were a few students he recognized, to which he waved a greeting to and generally got a greeting in return. Slowly Zann began to notice that most of the students were staring at him in silent wonder, unable to bear the burning stare of his fellow class members Zann turned in his seat so that he was once again facing the front of the room.
“Word of what you did to Dias must have spread” Shari whispered quietly as she slowly opened a tatty-looking text book.
“You think?” Zann replied, trying to smile but failing miserably.
Shari was about to reply but it was at that point that Quistis strolled into the room a smile on her face as she addressed many of the students by first name.

“I thought we could all start by discussing elements and common ailments of battle.” She said cheerfully, trying to loosen the class up a little bit.

Stevens, one of Zann's fellow class members in Zell’s class stood up quickly a wider grin on his face, A sign to anyone who knew him that he was about to say something funny.
“It’s been a gooda three weeks since I took the brown elixir.. An I couldn’t have done it without ya’ll” Stevens said in a slightly slurred voice and causing the entire class to burst out in laugher. Not even Quistis could contain herself; it took the class a good ten minutes to finally settle down but when it had there was defiantly a relaxed atmosphere ruling over the classroom.

They had just finished their discussion on the Holy element when a junior class member slipped into the classroom and moved quickly to where Quistis sat, a small note clutched in his tiny fist. Zann immediately recognized him as the one who Dias had been picking on yesterday.

Quistis took one look at the note the boy had before nodding to him, standing and walking to where Zann stood a frown on her face as she laid the note in front of him and returned to her desk returning to where the class had left off on discussing poison.

Fear gripped Zann’s heart as he dreaded to look at the note placed before him, afraid on what it might contain. Slowly his eyes fell upon the small piece of paper. “Zann, my office – now” The messy looking handwriting told him unemotionally. With a sigh Zann packed his books away and slipped quietly out of class, feeling the stares of interest follow his path to the door.

A feeling of complete dread fell upon Zann as he emerged into the slightly dimmed second floor hallway. Looking around Zann could see neither hide nor hair of the young boy who had delivered the note that would surely seal his fate. Zann couldn’t blame him really.
Looking down at the note clutched in his slightly trembling hand Zann knew there was no mistake, the hand writing was that of Seifer Almasy himself, and something told Zann that Seifer was NOT inviting him to his office for coffee and biscuits.
And substitute my own..."[~]

Chapter Four

Seifer was sitting behind his desk, his feet propped up on the polished wood as he angrily lectured the student who was sitting on a chair against the wall, her violet eyes hard and defensive. “That's a week of detention Summers, and be grateful it isn't a month.” As Zann walked in his eyes flicked to the student and he got to his feet. Between Rhia's stunt earlier and Zann knocking out his favourite student, he was NOT having a good day. “Well?” He demanded of Zann. “Would you like to explain why you knocked out my student and put him in the infirmary?”
Zann flinched noticeably from Seifer's angered tone of voice but stood firm, he knew it would come down to this eventually. “He was picking on a junior class member, I told him to stop, He got violent and I retaliated in self defence.” Zann replied coolly whilst trying not to make eye contact with the peroxide demon standing before him.
“He told me it was unprovoked and uncalled for.” Seifer snarled at the student and off to one side Rhia snorted derisively. “Oh PLEASE.” She interjected snidely. “Dias is an unmitigated a** who would lie through his teeth if he knew it would get someone in trouble. In actual fact he's like a miniature you.”

“Summers, if I want your opinion I'd ask for it. You're in enough trouble already, so I suggest you cork it before I add another week on to your sentence.” Turning his attention back to Zann, Seifer continued his interrogation.
“Picking on a junior class member? A likely story. It's more than likely that the junior broke a rule and Dias was disciplining him for the infraction - as is his responsibility.”
Zann sighed; he was going to have little luck bringing the rage filled Seifer around to his point of view so why bother? But, needless to that fact Zann ploughed on hoping his defence would hold. “I suppose my friend Dias also mentioned the excessive forced he used to, ‘accomplish’ his duty?” Zann asked with a slight snarl, after all not many could see but the junior class member's cheek had a distinct red mark upon it when Zann had arrived.

“So you decided to use excessive force to pay him back for it?” Seifer growled lowly. “As a result of your actions his nose will never be the same.”

“Yeah well we can give him a medal for it later. If you ask me it's a distinct improvement over how he looked before.” It was Rhia interrupting again. She'd had enough of her teacher's bad attitude all because his ‘favourite’ student had lost one fight and therefore made him look bad. “Look. You only have Dias' word against Zann's and c'mon, Dias is the sort of person who'd sell out his own mother to keep out of trouble. So I suggest you just let the matter drop...sir.”

Seifer glared coolly at his student then back at Zann. “A week's worth of detention for you. And as for you Summers, you can spend the next two weeks helping Dias with his Disciplinary Committee shifts. You might find it refreshing to enforce rules for a change instead of breaking them. That's all, both of you get the hell out of my sight.” And with that he sat back down behind his desk, indicating that the ‘meeting’ was at an end.

~//~

Because of the week’s worth of Detention Zann had received from Seifer it meant that he would be unable to attend the remainder of the study classes with Quistis. This worried Zann as he was sure it would result in his failure of the written exam coming up in the next week.

~//~

A bead of sweat broke out on Zann’s forehead as he considered the question written on the piece of paper before him. “Your party members are in critical condition and you are still engaging the enemy, what should you do?” This was a difficult question for Zann as many possible answers came to mind as he tried to remember what the textbook had said about situations like this.

Finally deciding on an answer Zann risked a brief look to where Shari sat across to the room and was surprised to find that she had already finished, there was no look of worry on her face; just a calm reassurance of knowing she had passed.
“Wish I were that confident.” Zann muttered before returning to his test, the sound of graphite on paper etching itself into his skull.

~//~

Chapter Five

The test results were posted up on a large makeshift board beside the directory the very next day. Sufficient to say the crowd milling around the board searching for their ID number could make a mob of students lining up for hotdogs look tame.
Zann wasn’t in the mood to deal with the crowds, besides he didn’t want to have to fight his way through to find out he might and probably did fail. So, he passed by the board, his mind set on the class ahead.

Shari caught up with him just as he was about to enter the classroom a wide smile on her face and a bounce in her step Zann had never seen before today. “Did you see the billboard!?” She asked excitedly before hugging him tightly.
Zann was more than a little confused; it was obvious that Shari had passed her exam but, surely he had failed.
“I take it you didn’t see the billboard.” She said with a pout forming on her lips. “Well, that’s alright!” She said while bouncing back into her cheerful attitude. “We passed Zann! We both passed!” a joyful laugh emanating from her as she hugged him tighter and planted a congratulatory kiss on his lips.

~//~

When Zann finally made it into the classroom his cheeks still had a distinct red tint to them. It was perhaps the first time he had ever blushed and he didn’t like the attention it was drawing in his direction.

Taking his usual seat Zann found it hard to concentrate throughout the class as he was overjoyed at the news that he had actually passed, then he would remember the softness of Shari’s lips against his and he would blush anew, causing a few fellow class members to snigger behind cupped hands.

The only thing Zann registered in class was something Zell was saying about how the practical portion of the SeeD exam would be different from previous years. And that until the date of the exam students participating would have free time until then. He then started making various suggestions on how they should spend their training and revising on what they have learned.

Zann didn’t care, after all that worrying of failing he believed that it was time to take some time away from Garden to relieve him of the stress which had been plaguing him all week. And he knew who else deserved a vacation.

~//~

Everything was organized, their bags were packed and the pair was ready for their walk to the city of Balamb, where they would spend the next three days relaxing before returning back to the Garden for the serious training they were going to have to put in if they wanted to pass the exam.

“Out for a stroll with the girlfriend today Zann?” The obnoxious voice of Dias as Zann and Shari were just through the main gate. Upon looking at Dias it was easy to see what Rhia had meant about him looking better than before, despite the doctor’s best efforts his nose had healed crookedly; making him look rather like a buzzard with a broken beak.
“I do not believe that is any of your business” Shari retorted sharply across the gap between them her eyes burning dangerously.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t realise that Zann lets his mistress do his talking for him.” Dias countered with a glare. “Believe me Zann, I AM going to pay you back for what you did to my nose.” Dais said arrogantly before clicking his fingers, turning on his heel and walking off, his two cronies following behind him like tame dogs.
What you remember... that is the illusion."[~]

Chapter Six

The sun was setting on the beautiful beach just outside the small town of Balamb, Shari and Zann had been walking along the beach for most of the day taking in the scenery and relaxing in the shade of close by trees. And now the day was nearly done, but Zann was not about to pass up an opportunity like this.

The setting sunlight set Shari’s mass of hair afire with motherly warmth and Zann quickly found himself comparing Shari to many different things. The sun, the sea, the stars and with each one it would cause Shari to laugh even harder, Zann found it a little annoying that she wasn’t taking his efforts seriously but he then reasoned that no body is perfect and he wouldn’t have her any other way.

After he had finished his descriptions of her they just sat there looking deep into each other’s eyes, neither one wanting the moment to pass. Then, with a iron determination Zann began to lower his head towards Shari’s his breaths coming in short gasps as he prepared for this big step in his life.
With an agonizing slowness the pairs lips locked together in a powerful kiss which neither shed away from.
The kiss only lasted for three minutes but to the pair it seemed like an eternity had passed, the sun had fully set on the horizon, the stars and moon above bathing them in an unearthly glow.

Shari wasn’t expecting Zann to become so open to her in this fashion, not that it mattered. It would save her a lot of time in the long run this way. Sighing to herself Shari shifted closer to Zann, squirming her way under his arm until he held her in a comforting embrace. Neither one said anything for fear of ruining the moment they had created together.

~//~

When the pair returned to Balamb Garden two days later they both felt better than they had finally managed to rest off the stress that had been plaguing them since the beginning of the year.
Upon their return they found out that the exam was going to be happening at the very end of the week, and they were relieved to find they would have just enough time to train for it.

“Hyaaah!” Shari screamed as she quickly thrust forwards at Zann’s neck with the thin, yet durable blade of her polearm; causing him to fall backwards into a defensive roll and land on his arse, panting heavily.
“N…Nice Job Shari, you should do well on the exam tomorrow.” Zann said sincerely as he could while slowly regaining his footing.
“I’m sure we’ll BOTH do fine.” She told him with a grin before dismantling her weapon. “We should get some sleep, they announce the teams tomorrow and we want to be fully rested for the action!” Her excitement was just impossible to avoid as Zann quickly found himself also looking forward to the day ahead.

~//~

“If we can have your attention please, we’ll begin to list the teams for the SeeD field exam.” Quistis said crisply to the mass of students mulling around close by, all anxious to get the exam over and done with.
Once she was sure she had everyone’s undivided attention she looked down at the list of names she had be given. “Firstly, Squad A will be composed of Rhia Summers, Shari Elasar and Zann Forestar, Zann is the Squad leader. Squad B will consist of…” Zann didn’t need to hear who would be in the other squads, all he knew was that with Shari in his team the exam was going to be a peace of cake, not to mention the fact that Rhia was more than likely going to be a valuable asset for Squad A…

~//~

An excited buzz ran through the crowd as the final squad was read out and the instructions given for the leaders to find the members of their teams in the throng of people crowding around the directory.
This is where Zann had an advantage as Shari was already by his side and Rhia wouldn't be to be hard to find because of her distinctive features. When Zann finally tracked the girl down she was muttering some very dark words at the back of Dais' head, who was walking off in the opposite direction, a smug look plastered on his arrogant face.
“I’m not even going to ask what went on there” Zann said calmly as the pair approached the still-steaming hot-head of Squad A.
“Probably a good idea, almighty leader of Squad A.” Rhia snapped back a little bit harshly than she had meant to before getting herself back under control. “Sorry Zann, I swear I’m going to give Dias a full facial make over one of these days...” She said ominously before perking up with a cheeky grin. “But enough of my worries…looks like Squad A is assembled huh? So lets hurry up and get our butts down to the parking lot before the other squads get there and steal our ride!”

The party made it to the parking lot with plenty of time to spare. Seeing as how Zann would be responsible for the party until they returned to Garden he silently crossed the parking lot to the far back where a rather sporty looking dark blue car sat, inviting anyone to drive it.
Grinning Zann waved over his excited party members who promptly congratulated him on his vehicle choice; admiring every detail of the car.
“Nice going Zann…but uh, do you have the key?” Shari asked quietly, not wanting anyone else to have a chance at taking the beauty of a car in front of them.

Without saying a word Zann produced the key from his jacket pocket, twirling it around one finger absently.
“Yoink!” Rhia said loudly as she snatched the twirling keys out of his hands and vaulted into the driver's seat, igniting the engine and revving it loudly smiling broadly as the purr of the engine echoed around the concrete parking lot. Sliding into the front seat Zann grinned at Rhia’s playfulness. After all, how often did one get to drive a car of this standard?

With a loud screech of the wheels the trio were off like a flash, leaving behind a trail of students who looked at them in awe and jealousy before slowly entering their vehicles and taking off, each one heading for the city of Balamb.

Chapter 7

When the trio finally made it to Balamb Zann and Shari were holding each other tightly, their hair standing on end. “Ok, If we survive this test, remind me NOT to let Rhia drive again… Ever!” Zann said weakly before sliding out of the car and searching the town.

An instructor was waiting for them, a clipboard in her hands, a bright welcoming smile on her face. “Squad A?” She asked as the trio approached.
Zann nodded slowly before greeting her with a smile of his own. “Yes, that’s correct this is Squad A” he said politely, pointing to each party member in turn and watching as the instructor ticked a few things on her clipboard.
“Excellent!” She said brightly. “Here are your tickets, feel free to start boarding as soon as possible” She finished while handing over three train tickets to Zann and pointing in the direction of the train station, her smile already resetting for the next Squad approaching.

The group were just about to mount the stairs leading to where the train waited, when a rather flashy looking sign caught Zann’s attention. “Hang on guys, look at that sign.” Zann said while pointing to the flashy sign.
“Typical Harry, never misses an opportunity for a sale” Rhia said with a smirk before walking over to the front door of the shop. A note was stuck on the door, “SeeD essential Bags! Inquire inside!”
“Shall we?” Shari said brightly before opening the door and stepping inside.
The shop was dim, yet extraordinarily set up, neat isles of various goods dotted the shop here and there, while a friendly looking face stared at the three who had entered.
“Greetings young SeeD’s to be! How can Harry help you today?” He said with a warm laugh as the trio approached the counter.
“I’m interested in the ‘SeeD essential Bags’ you have for sale” Zann said politely while eyeing up the things for sale. This store was much like the Balamb general store, except it dealt in products which Zann was pretty sure were not totally legal.. not that it mattered after all; a man has to have some vices…

“Ah, the essential bags! Those are extremely popular with SeeD candidates.” Harry said with a wide grin before pulling a medium sized backpack from under the counter, opened it and began to display the contents.
Rhia watched with idle curiosity while Shari moved away to look at a rack full of potions and the like.
“No extra price for quality! No sir! Harry looks after his customers he does!” Harry said when the bag was finally emptied.
Approximately the bag contained one tent, ten potions, five hi-potions, three softs, three eye drops, four antidotes and a small med pack, containing a full sized survival blanket.
“All of this and the backpack for the one time offer of 1000 gil!”

Zann mulled over the offer for a couple of minutes before making up his mind.
“Alright, we’ll take three” he said while reaching for his wallet
“Wonderful, and because I like you Harry will sweeten the deal! Harry will let each of you add to you packs five items each from the stand the pretty blonde lass is standing in front of!” Harry said with aplomb while accepting Zann’s money and passing him three of the packs.

Zann took two of them and quickly moved to where Shari was already busy selecting which five items she would add, asking for Zann’s opinions on her decisions.
While the two were occupied Rhia leaned over the counter and began discussing something with Harry. Some gil swapped hands and Rhia received a well-wrapped package, which she quickly dropped it into her pack.
“Always a pleasure doing business with you Harry” She said loudly before walking over to the rack the others were standing at, picking out her five items, depositing them and exiting the shop, a wide smile plastered to her face.

By the time the trio had exited the shop, the majority of the squads had arrived, deciding that they probably should get onto the train as soon as possible the party slung their backpacks onto their shoulders and fell in behind what appeared to be Squad F.

The train had just departed when the trio finally found a cabin to sit in. The cabin was no different from any other they had passed, aside from the fact that it was empty.
“Attention Students, this train is currently bound for Timber and should be there in twenty minutes. Upon arrival at Timber Squads A-D are to exit the train and make their way to the south gate of Timber where you will be further directed and briefed. Squads E-H are to remain seated; you will all be briefed once Squads A-D have exited the train. Thank you and Good Luck!”

“Well, at least we won’t be waiting too long to find out what we’re doing” Rhia said while rolling her eyes and sitting down on the plush looking couch in the middle of the room.

The minutes ticked by quickly as the train rattled loudly through the intercontinental tunnel which separated Balamb from Timber. It wasn’t long before the loud screeching of the train’s breaks announced to everyone that they had arrived in Timber, with a small jolt the train came to a complete stop.
“Right then, Lets go.. Don’t want to be late now..” Zann’s voice quivered as he stood and walked to the open door, Shari and Rhia close behind.

Zann had never been to Timber before, however that wasn’t going to stop him from leading his squad to the south exit of Timber. Following the signs all around him he finally made it to the south gate of Timber where someone he wasn’t expecting was waiting.
“Why if it isn’t the righteous wonder? And look he managed to find the south gate without the aid of a map!” Seifer said scornfully. “And look! He’s got a band of Girl scouts with him too! Seifer added as Rhia and Shari appeared from behind Zann

“In any case it doesn’t really matter” Seifer said with a slight grin.
“If you walk along this merry grey path for a little bit you’ll discover the Ragnarok.. I’m sure you won’t miss it.. It’s large, red, looks like a dragon and sticks out like a sore thumb. Head there and you’ll be briefed when everyone’s settled in.” Seifer said smartly before waving them through the gate.

Rhia was about to reply to Seifer’s remarks with a few of her own when another familiar voice spoke up from behind them.
“Why Instructor, I’m surprised that you’d say such things about a student. Why should you bother wasting your time and energy on those beneath your talents?” Dias asked innocently as he brushed past Zann and his group, a thick smile on his face as he passed through the gate, his two flunkies following close behind.

“Ooh! Sometimes I just want to..” Rhia finished her rant with a gesture of punching her fist into her hand.
“I know what you mean.. his head's so big that I wonder how he manages to fit it through doorways..” Shari replied, patting Rhia comfortingly on the shoulder.
The squad continued down the path for a little while, until the majestic form of the Ragnarok appeared before them, it’s metallic plates glowing blood red and causing everyone who saw it to be struck dumb.

The squads were waiting in the hanger of the Ragnarok waiting for the last squad to arrive, everyone taking in the sheer happiness of actually being onboard of the legendary Garden flagship. Xu, and Seifer entered the hanger immediately after the last squad arrived.
“Sheesh, if that squad were any slower we would have had time to swim to Esthar and back before they got here.” Seifer said sarcastically to Xu as they stood in front of the assembled squads, a whisper of excitement running through the crowd at the mention of the word ‘Esthar’
“Yes, whatever Seifer. Anyway.. onto the briefing!” Xu said excitedly as she pointed to a monitor that had been set up in the hanger for exactly that purpose.

“Esthar has recently noticed some rather unusual monster activity at Tear’s Point. A group of scouts reported back with news of a large mass of monsters moving slowly towards Esthar City. President Laguna Loire has requested the aid of SeeD to investigate and eliminate the monster threat. As we speak Squads E-H are currently en route to Esthar via Fisherman’s Horizon, where they will trek across the desert and set up a defence line about three miles away from the city in a small ravine where the wave of monsters are calculated to pass on their way to Esthar.” Xu paused for a breath while looking at the eyes of the students in front of her, making sure they understood what was going on.

“Squads A-D are being flown directly over the wave of monsters to Tears Point, here you will be dropped off. It is your mission to eliminate as many monsters as you can while trying to discover the source behind all this. Should you fail a team of SeeD’s will be sent in to get the job done.. They always do.
Remember, Squads E-H will be holding the current wave of monsters at bay, but it is imperative that you stop as many monsters as possible from forming a second wave and converging upon the defensive line.
We should be flying over the wave of monsters right now and reach Tears Point momentarily, prepare yourselves and remember! The order to withdraw takes priority over everything; your evacuation point is approximately two and a half miles west of Tears Point. Good luck!”
What you remember... that is the illusion."[~]

Chapter Eight

Nobody spoke, the Ragnarock hanger was quiet as each squad took in what they would be engaging in the next five or so minutes. Some students shook their heads in disbelief, others smiling and silently physicing themselves up.

Aside from Dias, Zann was probably the only other person there who didn’t feel anything about the up coming mission. He was above fear, yet humble enough not to make a show of being brave for his squad members and so he sat, deciding on not feeling anything.

With a sudden jolt the Ragnarok fell from the air, causing a few students to panic. At the last possible moment the large and powerful landing thrusters kicked in and allowed the Ragnarok to land with a light bump.

Standing up Zann was surprised to see that Rhia and Shari were immediately by his side. He nodded slowly before drawing his gunblade. “Alright.. Lets do this” he said tensely, the excitement of the impending battle finally sinking in.
The door to the hanger opened quickly and the students were momentarily blinded by the deep red sunlight, which set the desert they hand landed in alight with an eerie blood red glow.

Some monsters, which had seen the Ragnarok land, moved swiftly over to investigate what dared defy them. Only to be blasted away from the powerful chain guns mounted on the side of the massive flagship. Taking this as a sign Zann ran down the ramp into the unknown heading towards the giant structure known as Tear’s Point, Shari and Rhia close behind.

Being Squad A Zann’s group had the furthest to travel, the alleyway they were assigned to clear out first was at the very back of Tear’s Point and so they didn’t have time to stop and dispatch monsters in their way, instead they took the ‘hit and run’ tactic, leaving the wounded monsters for the remaining squads following in their wake to finish off.

The opening to the alleyway, which had been shown to him on the monitor in the Ragnarok, appeared suddenly to the right of him a few monsters slowly seeping out. Sliding to a stop Zann turned to face the surprised monsters, Rhia and Shari appearing at his flanks seconds afterwards.

Pausing only for a few seconds to catch their breath; the trio charged towards the small group of monsters, each person picking a separate target and going after it with an almost animal like fury.

Twisting his body to the right Zann narrowly avoided a clawing attack from a nasty looking imp and retaliated with a furious slash, which split the annoying imp down the middle. Zann had no time to check on how the others were faring as he had to throw his gunblade up quickly in a sloppy parry to avoid an Iron Giant doing to him what he had done to the Imp moments ago.

Rhia gave a satisfied grin as she twirled her staff around in an impressive display to block a Turtapod’s spinning attack, deflecting it neatly and causing it to crash into the nearby wall.
In her peripheral vision Rhia could see the broad blade of the Iron Giant descending down powerfully to where Zann crouched in a standard overhead parry position.
Not liking the appearance of the Iron Giant, Rhia rocked back quickly, took a few steps and slammed her staff into the ground using the force to vault herself to Zann’s side.

Shari was too busy fighting a Torama to notice Zann’s plight completely. Growling loudly the Torama leapt at Shari, it’s mouth open wide and claws stretched out in front. With the base of her pole arm Shari swatted the large cat aside as easily as one would an irritating fly, before quickly flicking her wrist and gutting the Torama neatly.
Stopping to see how the others were fairing Shari’s eye almost bulged out of their sockets when she saw the Iron Giant’s blade descending towards Zann, so with a shocked cry she sprinted full pelt towards Zann, hoping she would make it in time to help.

For Zann, time slowed to a crawl as the broad, curved blade fell. He had made his defence, now he was in fate’s hands. There was a loud CLANG and a shower of sparks as the Giant’s blade made contact with Zann’s; the sheer force behind the blow shaking Zann thoroughly, but he managed to absorb a lot of the impact by moving back quickly.
In a quick manoeuvre Zann allowed his left arm to drop slightly, creating a slope and causing the Giant’s blade to slide harmlessly to the ground, with a quick backwards roll Zann completed the manoeuvre just as Shari and Rhia appeared on the scene.

Zann cursed silently to himself, knowing that he wouldn’t be able to withstand the beating attacks from the Iron Giant for very long. “You guys really didn’t need to come over.. I had the situation COMPLETELY under control” Zann said with a weak little laugh before flexing his gunblade in front of him.

“Yeah, looks like you had it under control from where I was standing.” Shari smirked before assuming a battle ready stance herself.
“You guys are nuts if you think you're going to make a dent in that walking tank..” Rhia said smartly as she sized up the slowly advancing Iron Giant.
“Well then.. any suggestions?” Zann and Shari said in almost perfect unison.

“Aside from avoiding that beastly looking sword?” Rhia stated the obvious her tone dripping sarcasm. “The thing which makes it untouchable is the thick armour which encases it..” stopping to think for a moment Rhia lifted her head in triumph “So obviously that’s where we need to hit it.. And sorry, but your conventional weapons won’t quite cut it.. But I happen to have something that will.” Rhia finished before pulling a small canister out of her backpack, which sat easily in the palm of her hand.

Zann knew immediately what it was Rhia held in her hand and could see by her logic that her explosives were going to be the only thing which could take the Giant down.
Nodding slowly Zann turned to look deep into Shari’s eyes, it was then that he saw that she would willingly follow him into hell and back if necessary. Turning back to Rhia he grimaced “How long do you need?” He asked as straightforwardly as possible, noting that the Giant was almost in range for his huge blade to start doing some damage.

“As long as you possibly can, but I would say no more than four minutes at the most..” Rhia replied solemnly as she reached into her backpack and withdrew a few more explosives.

Without another word Zann and Shari took a few steps forward to take up defensive positions which would help them survive and launch counter attacks against the Iron Giant.
Unprepared for this tactic the Iron Giant lashed out with a mailed fist, causing the pair to scatter in opposite directions before curving swiftly around and launching vicious counter attacks upon his armoured flanks.

The Iron Giant was held in confusion, every time he turned to face one of the fleas attacking him, they would quickly duck under him, while the other would attack with extra force.

Rhia admired the pair’s tactics for a moment before taking a few quick breaths and charging into action. Rolling between the Giant’s legs Rhia planted two explosives on the gleaming mail as she rolled through. Standing quickly she turned and placed a further five explosive’s on the distracted Giant’s front, four on his back, one on each shoulder and the final one on the back of his helmet.

Though their tactic had the element of simplicity, Zann and Shari were beginning to tire. And it was beginning to show, as the Giant was gaining more and more chances to counterattack.
“Alright you guys! Get clear!” Rhia shouted at the pair, who were more than willing to move as far away as possible.

Concentrating Rhia formed a Fira spell in her out stretched hand and grinned. “Click.. Click… Boom!” She yelled as she released the spell and watched it speed off towards the now vulnerable back of the Iron Giant.

Had Zann and Shari been behind the Iron Giant it would have been certain that they would not have escaped the explosion which resulted from Rhia’s Fira spell, but because they were moving as quickly as they could in the opposite direction, the armoured front of the Giant took the brunt of the explosion, only allowing the smallest of shockwaves to pass.

Once the smoke and dust finally settled, the trio looked expectantly to where the Iron Giant had been standing moments ago their eyes full of triumph. Their victory however was short lived. Aside from a large crack running down from the right shoulder to it’s waist on both it’s front and back, the Iron Giant seemed to have hardly been affected at all.

The Iron Giant was filled with anger, how dare these insects mock him by using their cowardly tactics and explosives! He was going to enjoy crushing each, one by one. Letting out a powerful and angry growl the Giant took a menacing step forward. The sound of the previous explosion was merely a whisper compared to the mighty crash that was made as the Iron Giant fell over, finally succumbing to the mortal wounds which had been struck.

Zann and Shari were puffing when Rhia joined them, a wicked smile plastered on her face. “They don’t call me a TEE for nothing” She said in self-congratulation before looking to the sky. “What an absolutely spiffing day..” she murmured
“I can see how you earned such a title.. But I’m just glad we all made it out of that confrontation in one peace.. Lets take a quick break to regain our breaths, we don’t want to be fatigued if we encounter any other monsters” Zann said between mouthfuls of air before leaning against the wall, concentrating on regulating his breathing.

After their quick break the party continued slowly down the alleyway, dispatching a few more monsters the party finally reached the end of the alleyway, a huge stone wall blocking their path forwards.
“Well, I guess we should head back and see how the other squads are doing..” Zann suggested quickly before turning around to lead the way.

It was only after a few steps that Zann noticed his breath steaming in the air, this puzzled him as he knew that a desert’s temperature could drop to below freezing; that normally didn’t happen until nightfall and anyone could tell that it was quite a few hours before then.
Zann felt a shudder run down his spine. Something didn’t feel right. It was at that moment that a beautiful looking woman surrounded in a light blue aura appeared from around the corner of the alleyway.

No one was prepared for this woman appearing. Who was she? Why is she here? How is she floating off the ground? Each member had many questions they wished to voice, however no one seemed to be able to speak, they were so taken by the strangeness of the phenomena.

Finally snapping to her senses Shari stepped forward confidently, her eyes locked on the floating woman who bared their path. “Who are you and why do you block our way?” She said confidently, tightening her grip on her polearm enough for her knuckles to turn white.

The woman glared at Shari for a moment before slowly settling to the ground. Her gaze never leaving the party in front of her, “How dare you deem yourself worthy enough to speak to me!” The woman spat, causing the trio to flinch backwards in surprise.
“I am the mistress of Ice and Snow, I am the dealer of your fates, I am Shiva!” She almost screamed before seeming to regain her composure.
“I block your path because I plan to kill you all.” she said simply, as if talking to dogs. “You humans are a plague of this world, a plague I have been chosen to cure it.” She then finished with a zealous smile on her face, her blue hair shimmering in the red light of the desert sun.

Not wishing to anger her further Shari returned to Zann’s side a fearful look stuck on her face.
Zann had had enough, clearly this woman could not be the Shiva he had read about in text books, while it was true that Shiva was a master of the Ice element all the texts Zann had read depicted her as a gentle spirit.
“You must be mistaken” Zann said as diplomatically as possible, staring deep into the woman’s eyes. “We mean you no harm..”
“Silence!” Shiva snapped, infuriated with the lengths this boy was willing to go to in order to save his skin.

She took a deep breath.

“You can plead all you like, everyone of you shall feel my Ice melt away you flesh and gnaw and your bones. Your fate is inescapable.” Shiva described their fates as if it were some task which was below her.
“But alas, I do grow tired of talking to those which are below me..” She finished with a steely glint in her eyes before her grin widened, a small orb of light beginning to glow in her open palm.
“Diamond Dust!” She yelled, as the orb exploded and sent many ice fragments hurtling towards the stunned party members.

Chapter 9

‘Is this the end? Is this the place where fate had decided for Zann and his party to give up and die?’ Millions of questions rushed through Zann’s head as the sparkling ice shards charged unemotionally towards them.
“No” Zann said in defiance as he raised his blade to a ready position.
“This is not our time to die!” he said boldly before moving forward to intercept the flying Ice shards.

There was no way that Zann would be able to deflect every shard, but he was going to do his best to get as many a possible.
There was a hollow clinking, as shards smashed into the cold steel of his blade, much like the sound of hail smashing against a tin roof. For every five shards he blocked three shards would get past and head full pelt in Shari’s and Rhia’s general direction only to be smacked out of the air as soon as they came into reach of their weapons.

Rhia and Shari were already moving forward when the last shard was beaten out of the sky, both of them surprised that they had actually managed to survive Shiva’s onslaught.
“That’s one for the record books eh Zann?” Rhia said with a grin, slapping Zann on the shoulder.
However the grin dropped from her face and she recoiled sharply as her hand immediately began to burn from the intense cold that had settled over Zann’s body, encasing him in a slowly expanding tomb of ice.

“Do not fear” Shiva said softly. “Soon you both shall meet his fate” Shiva’s words hung in the air for a few moments before a feral like grin found it’s way to her face and slowly she began to advance on the silent Rhia and Shari.

Shari didn’t want to believe that Zann was gone, she couldn’t and she wouldn’t! Focusing her attention on the non-moving Zann, Shari whispered an apology before stretching out her arm and unleashing a Firaga on the young man's frozen form.

A cloud of steam burst forth as the hot fire spell collided with the ice surrounding Zann and dissolved it instantly. Zann, half frozen and not really knowing what was going on fell quickly to the ground as the ice which held him in place vanished, his breath coming in quick gasps.

Zann was in shock, so it was not surprising that he barely felt Rhia grab him by the collar of his shirt and drag him back a couple of meters, her eyes wide.
Shiva stopped as the spectacle unfolded in front of her; She had not expected these humans to possess level three offensive magic, let alone use it to save their friend from the slow and painful death that her ice attack had sentenced him to.

It took Zann only a few moments to piece together what had happened, He was busy deflecting the ice shards into dust, the dust must have settled onto him and froze him slowly over time.
It was then that Zann noticed a couple of scorch marks on his jacket, indicating that someone had used some sort of fire spell to defrost him.

With agonizing slowness Zann slowly made his way to a standing position, his cold muscles unwilling to move or support his weight. After a brief stretching to leech as much of the cold out of his muscles as possible Zann slowly stepped forwards to where Shari and Rhia were preparing to launch an attack against the malevolent Shiva.

“So you managed to save that boy, only to have him die later?” Shiva asked the pair as she approached, her hands crossing her chest as she walked.
Her hands snapped down to her thighs and two blades of equal shape and length appeared out of nowhere, their reflective surfaces indicating that they were made of ice.

“Rhia.. Got any explosives left?” Zann asked hoarsely as he staggered between Rhia and Shari, causing them to look at him in surprise and amazement.
“Yeah..” Rhia said easily “Why”
“Because I need you to make a way out for us in case we can’t defeat Shiva” Zann told her bluntly and in a tone which expected her to do it.
Without another word Rhia faced the wall to their right and began making their escape route.

“So now you will run like frightened mice?” Shiva said with scorn as she closed in, her twin ice blades rising into a position to deliver a powerful strike.
“Let's go Shari, We have to hold her off as long as we can for Rhia to make our escape route..” Zann said with some laboured breathing before taking a deep breath and charging at Shiva, Shari matching him stride for stride.

Shiva had expected them to try something as desperate as a full on frontal assault and so showed no surprise as their lightning paced attacks forced her slowly backwards, giving them the illusion that they had the upper hand.
She had been forced back roughly fifteen meters before she decided to stop playing with the two insects dancing in front of her; Her strokes became suddenly swifter and held more authority behind them as she began to push the two back from whence they came with little effort.

Regardless of knowing the fact that Shiva was only toying with them, the pair pressed on with iron determination, nether one of them willing to give up, both of them knowing that the minute they did all three of them would be doomed.
Shiva’s triumph didn’t last long, despite the severe hammering her twin ice blades were doing, Zann and Shari still fought on, each one increasing the speed and power behind their attacks to match Shiva blow for blow.

It was with a sudden surprise that the cloaked figure hidden atop the wall Rhia was rigging with explosives noticed what she was doing, knowing they didn’t have much time until the wall exploded they hastily stood and did a backwards somersault, landing on bent knees and disappearing down the alleyway.

The roar which accompanied the explosion behind the pair had put all other explosions to shame, Rhia had not only succeeded in blowing a hole in the wall but had also caused a minor earthquake which even brought the mighty Shiva to her knees.
Not wanting to waste the opportunity Zann and Shari stood on shaky legs and half ran, half wobbled to where Rhia stood admiring her work. Ushering her through the trio ran madly down the alleyway; wanting to put as much distance between Shiva and themselves as they could.

Shiva was not expecting them to run away, but the explosion caught her completely off guard, a mistake she wasn’t going to allow to happen again. Her eyes turned steel grey as she quickly gave chase knowing that this time playtime was over.

“Did you really think that you could escape my wrath?” Shiva asked with amusement as she finally tracked the party down, her eyes full of malice.
“If I had known you three were going to be this much trouble, I’d have killed you sooner. But never mind your deaths are near, I wouldn’t suggest trying to run again for I shall not allow you to...” Shiva said evenly as she began her forward movement her blades dancing in front of her like venomous snakes.

This was it, it was time to make a stand right there or doom the world to a slow death by Shiva’s hand. And Zann, Rhia and Shari were not the sort of people who were willing to roll over and play dead quite so easily.
Here they were, pushed to their outer limits, death waving itself in their faces. They had had enough Shiva needed to go down.. and fast.

Shari took the lead, her pole arm already weaving a complicated design in the air. “Tempest Stryke!” She yelled as she threw her pole arm high into the air. A smooth wind began to snake its way around the base of the pole arm, as soon as the blade struck the ground the breeze rushed from the base of the weapon, slowly encompassing the trio, each member of the party feeling the effects immediately as it restored their lagging energy and healed minor wounds.

Rhia was the next one to step up to the plate, taking her lead from Shari she bowed her head slightly and allowed her staff to begin circling her, the rotations growing quicker by the second. “Centra Prayer! Rhia said in a soft voice as her reddish brown hair shone in its own light.
From out of nowhere small soldiers began to appear, their armour resembling that of the ancient Centra tribe.
Raising one finger Rhia pointed at the still form of Shiva, sending a silent signal for her soldiers to attack.

It was Shiva’s turn to be frightened; She had never suspected anyone of them capable enough to launch such furious and deadly attacks. Her ice blades waved in dangerous arcs as she began deflecting soldiers left right and centre.
Unfortunately for Shiva she was deflecting them into the walls next to her, causing the mindless golems to explode on contact sending a vast torrent of rubble crashing down on the stunned Shiva.

Zann knew what he had to do.. Shari and Rhia had shown their limit breaks and now it was time for him to do the same. Looking to the sky for a moment he absently began to twirl his gunblade around his shoulders, a few moments passed before his gaze shifted to the now trapped Shiva. Bringing his now sparking gunblade down he slammed it hard into the ground bending his knees and moving into a position much like one in grief would assume.
“Grievance Blow!” He roared as tear shaped bolts were suddenly released from his gunblade and sent flying towards where Shiva lay firmly embedded in the rubble.

Time began to slow as the bolts came racing forwards, bringing with them Shiva’s fate. It was with a chill smile that her mind opened to the truth, people as strong as this could not possibly be a plague on the world. The bolts were close now, only a couple of seconds remained until they would spill out her lifeblood.
“I’m sorry” Shiva whispered softly as the bolts struck, a single tear of ice falling from her eyes to land unnoticed on the ground shattering into many tiny droplets.
What you remember... that is the illusion."[~]

Chapter 10 ^^

Chapter Ten

Panting heavily Zann slowly allowed the grip around the hilt of his blade to loosen and letting his body crumple to the smooth alley path his breaths coming once again in short laboured gasps, his lips glazed with a slight blue hue as numbness once again began to sink into his tired muscles.

Rhia and Shari were in similar states. Rhia had a small river of blood running down her leg from where one of Shiva’s shards sliced past, though it seemed nothing more than a scratch it was bound to be big enough to require stitches.
Shari had got a nice cut above her left eyebrow from where one of Shiva’s blades got deflected and gashed her, the shear ferocity of the battle causing the blood running into her eye to be ignored.

It was at that time that a wide-eyed student from Squad D came around the corner his chest puffed out with the air of someone highly important. He took one glance at the bedraggled looking squad before coughing politely to ensure he had their undivided attention. “I finally found you guys, Wow you guys must have gotten whooped real bad… Where was I? Oh yes! The order to withdraw has been given; all squads here at Tears Point are to assemble at the evacuation point at the western exit of Tears Point.” The student said with a deep exhale, before looking at the squad one last time and disappearing down the alleyway from where they had come from.

~//~

It was to be expected, Squad A had be deployed pretty much on the opposite side of Tears Point from the evacuation point so it was no surprise when the three students who made up the squad staggered out of an alleyway with a determined focus on reaching the awaiting Ragnarok. What was surprising was the fact that the squad looked like they had just faced the entire Galbadian army single-handed.

No one in the squad spoke until the reached the smooth metallic ramp of the Ragnarok its dull clank under foot offering visions of safety and warmth. Seifer was there, smirking at the sorry state that Squad A had become, he said something but no one in the squad heard it as they pushed their way into the Ragnarok each one wanting to forget this day ever happened.

The excited chatter of the other squads in the hanger bay died away as Squad A entered, aside from their squad all the others had appeared to have returned safe and sound. Leading the said squads to they ran into some monsters they couldn’t handle, or believe that Squad A either was comprised of inexperienced wimps.
Most of them were inclined to believe the latter.

Deciding to stick together in order to save them the pain of trying to explain to everyone present how they almost got killed fighting Shiva; the squad chose a spot by one of the large windows that surrounded the hanger bay and collapsed against the wall. The team was in such a bad state that not one of them felt the Ragnarok fire its powerful engines and begin the short flight back to Balamb Garden.

Once the Ragnarok was in motion most of the other squads returned to their excited discussions about whether they thought they had passed the exam or not. Soon all sound faded from Zann’s ears as his eyes slowly drooped shut, Rhia and Shari also showing the same symptoms. Zann knew he should probably be doing something to stop himself from falling asleep but his brain just didn’t hold enough will power over his body and so, with a quiet sigh his world turned black, sleep’s warm loving arms embracing his body and numbing the pain.

~//~

Zann could no longer hear the loud roar of the Ragnarok engines, nor could he feel the smooth metallic plate which he had rested against. Instead he felt… Warm. It slowly came to Zann that he was no longer upright but lying on his back.

The bright lights of Balamb Garden’s infirmary blinded Zann as his eyes slowly fluttered open. “Dr Kadowaki! He’s finally awake!” an excited voice yelled loudly from somewhere nearby. Zann was unable to focus on them for any length of time for almost as soon as the word of his awakening had left the person's lips Dr Kadowaki entered the room which currently housed him.

Dr Kadowaki moved swiftly over to Zann’s bed taking in a few readings from the machines which he had been attached to. “Odd, we guessed that you were going to be out of it for quite a while yet.” She said as she bit at a nail on her finger. “Never mind, it’s better that your awake now anyway. Excuse me while I go and announce your progress to the headmaster, Riku, please run some standard tests and explain to Zann what happened.” Dr Kadowaki instructed as she almost bounced out of the room glad to have Zann out of the danger zone.

“Yes ma’am!” The student known as Riku said smartly as she picked up a clipboard and collected the few odds and ends she would need to perform the simple tests required of her.
“You gave Dr Kadowaki quite a scare when you were rushed in.” She said softly as she checked his reflexes and temperature.
“I have never seen someone so blue, at first we almost thought you were dead.” She finished as she turned to write a few notes on the clipboard in her hands.

Rubbing his eyes and yawning briefly Zann eventually rests his head in his hands and allows the world to focus. “How long have I been asleep?” He asked Riku weakly as he struggled to remember past events.
“Well.” Said Riku carefully as she checked the papers at the edge of his bed.
“Not counting the time you were asleep on the Ragnarok, nearly two and a half days.” She said softly before moving closer to him.
“But enough talking, you still need some rest, Try to get some sleep and we’ll have you up and moving in no time.. ok?” She said with a maternal kindness which Zann found hard to ignore, for almost as soon as she had finished speaking to him he found his vision once again fading to black, his head falling onto the soft pillow and sleeps warm embrace hugging him tightly.

~//~

A few days had passed since Zann had first woke up, after that it seemed that for those brief hours that he was awake and not having tests run on him he had a constant stream of visitors.

The first, and perhaps the most important would have been Headmaster Squall. He came alone, and requested privacy as he entered. After all, something went down at Tears Point and he was going to find out what.
“So those monsters advancing towards Esthar were under Shiva’s control?” Squall mused as he took in Zann’s tale noting the similarities between Shari and Rhia’s side of the story. Squall slowly stood to his feet and prepared to leave the room; at the door he turned and fixed Zann with a curious expression. “I think we should keep this story between the four of us ok?” He asked Zann with a tone expecting him to obey his suggestion before nodding once and leaving the room.

The other visitors were perhaps not as important as Squall was but it was somewhat comforting to know that there were people who took time out of their busy days to see how he was going. Even Shari and Rhia were allowed to visit from their own rooms in the infirmary on occasion.

The only problem Zann appeared to be suffering from was that he could see miniature Shiva sitting lightly on his chest, watching him with unblinking eyes. At first Zann thought that it must have been an effect of the extreme cold which his body had suffered through, until she finally began to speak to him in a soft and sweet voice unlike the one she had spoken with at Tears Point which was full of hate and malice. “So? Are you finally convinced that I’m not some figment of your imagination yet?” She asked with a tight grin before walking up his chest until she was pretty much staring eye to eye with him. Zann however was still not willing to believe that she was real, and If she was real then what was she doing there? Was she there to seek revenge? Zann didn’t know.

“If you will listen please!” Shiva said hotly and gave Zann’s nose a brief flick to gain his attention. “If your done speculating whether or not I actually exist I’ll tell you why I’m here.” She said in a tone that expected no answer.
“Now then,” She said with a glare to ensure that she wasn’t going to be interrupted. “I don’t remember much, except for fighting you and your friends. Firstly I came here to apologize for what I did to the three of you, however you must understand that I didn’t willingly wish to harm you, I was forced to by someone powerful…” She said carefully watching Zann to ensure that he was following her.
“The mighty attack you launched at me held enough power to not only destroy the body I was using but also break the control of the one controlling me. And as thanks for freeing me from their control I decided to revert to the form you currently see me as and hitch a ride with you. Like it or not young one, I find your stubbornness and power intriguing so, whether you accept or not, you're stuck with me from now on. Don’t disappoint me.” Shiva said with an impish grin and doing a merry little dance where she stood, awaiting Zann’s reaction.

It had all been too much for Zann, first he had to convince Squall that he did in fact fight the fabled Shiva at tears point with naught more than two other students of the same skill level as him for support. And now he was busy discussing why the little ice nymph representation of Shiva that no one can see was there in front of his face pretty much sealing his fate without even asking him! Zann opened his mouth to reply but ended up releasing a loud yawn instead, his eyes drooping as he once again fell into sleep’s warm embrace.

Chapter Eleven

Dr Kadowaki was unwilling to allow the three students from squad A to leave the infirmary, however she was unable to argue against the three of them for too long. So the next day she finally caved in to their arguing. ‘Stubborn as a T-Rexaur’ she thought to herself as they turned to leave. At least she hadn’t completely lost the battle, the three were allowed to leave on the condition that they all report to the infirmary over the next three days at set times for regular check ups.

“Why me!?” She exclaimed before lowering herself to a nearby chair and taking a sip from a mug of freshly brewed coffee she had left on a table close by.

“Ahhh! It feels so good to be up and about” Rhia chirped happily as the three of them left the infirmary. All three of them were glad to finally be allowed to leave but Rhia seemed to be the happiest.
“Anyone would think that you can’t stand being in one place too long..” Zann said with a hidden grin as Shari walked with one arm around him protectively unsure as to whether he was better or not.
“Can you honestly say you weren’t itching to get out of there and find out whether you passed the exam or not?” Rhia countered with her own impish grin before racing off down the hallway, stopping as many students as she could find and asking them about the results but all she was able to find out was that they had yet to be released.

“What do ya mean the results have yet to be announced!?” Rhia exclaimed to the pair of frightened students she was currently interrogating before giving a defeated sigh and dismissing them with a simple wave of her hand.
“Oh well, at least we won’t be the last ones to find out about the results!” She beamed as she rejoined Shari and Zann; both of whom had been watching her with mild interest and were now in a rather heated discussion about Zann having a haircut.

“I don’t care what you say Zann,” Shari said quietly while fixing the messy mass of hair neglected by Zann for so many years.
“Whether we pass the exam or not you ARE going to the inauguration party and you will at least look presentable.” She finished coolly before running a hand through Zann’s hair.
“Whatever you say Shari” He said in a defeated tone and giving a brief acknowledging nod to Rhia as she joined them once again and glared deeply as a wide grin appeared on her face as she caught the finer points of his and Shari’s discussion.

“Your female friend is right, you would look much more presentable with your hair cut to a better length.” Shiva piped in from where she sat in Zann’s shirt pocket, a similar grin to Rhia and Shari’s on her impish face.
“Why do I feel that I’m in the middle of a female conspiracy!?” Zann asked of the roof above them while shaking his head, expecting no reply. Around him, the girls dissolved into helpless giggles.

~//~

Zann had naturally explained Shiva’s presence and purpose in accompanying him when they had finally reached the Cafeteria for a well-earned meal. Zann had been a little surprised to find out that Shari and Rhia could also see the little ice nymph who had attached herself to him.
“Hospital food gets quite… predictable” Shari had commented as they sat down at an empty table, their trays piled high with hot dogs, chips, soda and other items which they had missed during their extended stay in the infirmary.

“So Shiva was being controlled by someone, who then sent her to attack Esthar huh?” Rhia asked as she offered a french-fry to Shiva who looked at it curiously for a few moments before taking it in her small hands and slowly nibbling on it, a foolish grin on her innocent face as she enjoyed the taste.
“So she told me..” Zann replied as he watched Shiva with distaste, rolling his eyes at how easily she could be pleased.
“Wow Zann.. Shiva must have seen something really strong in you in order to have attached herself to you!” Shari said in delight as she watched the cute little nymph gnaw away slowly at the French fry with a warm smile on her own face for the first time in nearly a week.

Bing Bing Bing!, the sound of the Gardens PA system causing an eerie silence to envelop the students of Garden as they all immediately stopped what they were doing in order to pay attention to the announcement, knowing full well that it would have something to do with the exam results.
Rhia was literally on the edge of her seat, biting her nails in anticipation.

“Good afternoon students, this is just a quick announcement to advise SeeD candidates who took part in the SeeD field exam five days ago should make their way to the second floor hallway where the results will be announced” There was a relieved sigh that echoed throughout the Garden as the announcement shed away the agony which the students had been suffering through over the week.
“Also, the Disciplinary committee would like to remind students that It is the job of everyone to ensure that Gardens rules are enforced and regulated. Anyone who has any concerns may talk with an Instructor or any member of the Disciplinary committee. Thank you and enjoy your day” The speaker added before going to switch the microphone off but ended up knocking it off the desk and landing on the hard floor of the third floor.
“Ooops!” Was the last thing the students heard before the PA suddenly cut off rather unprofessionally.

A large riot broke out in every area of Garden as students raced each other to the single elevator that led to the Second floor corridor. Noticing that Rhia couldn’t contain herself Zann let out a quiet sigh as he coaxed Shiva back onto his shoulder and began to lead the two girls out of the Cafeteria and into the insane thong of students, a slight smile on his face. Was it one of fear? Or Triumph? Zann didn’t know, but he would find out very soon.

~//~

Most students were smart enough to stay out of his way, the fact that he had a gunblade slung over his shoulder and his two closest buddies was no surprise either. After all, being part of the disciplinary committee had to have some advantages.
Zann and his squad had performed admirably in the SeeD exam, he had to admit that, however there was no possible way they could compare his effort with the brilliant tactics and manoeuvres which, he and his squad had pulled off flawlessly.
No, today was the day he would spread his wings and fly into the blissful daylight of SeeDom.

Before Dias even realised it he and his two cronies were already sliding into the smooth glass cab of the elevator. Dias watched as Sujia yawned out of boredom before leaning forward slowly and pushing the button that would carry them to the second floor hallway, where many fates would be decided, some for the better, some for the worse. Only time would tell, however Dias was in no way worried about the results looming in front of him.

Zann watched as Dias went through his usual routine of bullying other students out of his way. ‘That jerk is so self centred he would consider himself a god amongst the students if he were ever to become a SeeD’ Zann thought to himself as the glass plate doors of the Elevator’s cab closed and began to carry Dias and his cronies up to the second floor.

~//~

Eventually all the students who participated in the Field exam were accounted for in the second floor Hallway and now was the time of reminisce for the students, Most of them wanted to believe they had passed the exam, but deep down everyone had the fear that they had failed.
What would they do should they fail? While it wasn’t too serious of a question as most of the students would stay on in Garden and learn more over the next year so as to take another chance to aspire to SeeDom.

It was at the point where the students were most on edge that a member of the Garden faculty appeared from the bridge which linked the second floor with the elevator near by, a clipboard was clutched tightly in his hands a no nonsense expression on his face.
“Should your name be read please make your way to the elevator and await further instructions.” The faculty member said coolly as he lowered his eyes to the clipboard in his hands.

“I don’t believe there’s any point in getting anyone’s hopes up So why don’t I save you the effort and take Sujia, Kaze and myself to the elevator and wait for all the others to show up, that is assuming that there is anyone else on that list.” Dias said smugly as he began to walk forward, only to be met with contempt from the students clustered around and the faculty member in front of them.

“Master Dias, you would do well not to rush to such conclusions. And aside from that, the rules are quite clear. No one is to pass me unless his or her name is called by me. Do you understand?” the faculty member chided Dias quietly before returning his eyes back to the list on the clipboard.

Dias glared at the small pockets of students who began to snigger at his reprimanding before shrugging his shoulders slowly and leaning against a near by wall. Suija and Kaze quickly following suite, “Have it your way, But I’m sure it won’t matter much as I am positive my name will be called.” Dias said coolly, running a hand through his light blonde locks as he awaited the announcement with minor interest.

“Without further delay.” The faculty member said as he glared in Dias’s direction. “I will now read the names of those present who have passed the exam. Once again I remind you that should your name be called you are to assemble at the elevator.” Taking a brief pause for a breath the faculty member began reading names off the list.
“Alucid Ben”
“Yes!” came the loud reply from a student at the back of the mob as he slowly made his way to the front and from there to the elevator as directed.
“Shari Elasar” The faculty member continued, ignoring the spectacle Ben was making.

Shari gave Zann and Rhia a surprised look before grinning with embarrassment and making her way to where the sounds of Ben’s rejoicing could be heard down the hallway, leaving the group of students to wonder if they had passed or not.

~//~

It wasn’t long until a very relieved Zann came to join the small group of five waiting at the elevator a bright grin on his face as he immediately moved to Shari’s side, his hand wormed it’s way into hers and gripped it softly in congratulation. This movement went unnoticed by most of the students present but not Shiva who ended up sniggering quietly to herself in her cosy position in Zann’s pocket noting how transparent humans were.

In time five more students came down the hallway to join the five that had already assembled at the elevator, Rhia being the last student amongst them. There was no time to celebrate as almost as soon as Rhia took her own place close to Zann and Shari everyone could hear Dias making a fuss down the hall, his voice echoing around them from many well practiced hours at shouting at students who broke the rules.

“Hang on! Why am I not on that list? Surely you must have missed my name, Dias Ramirez.” Dias said hotly yet with some dignity as if he were sharing some sort of joke with the faculty member.
“I was chosen to read the announcements because it is Impossible for me to make mistakes Dias Ramirez, You name is Not on this list. Better luck next year.” The faculty member replied coldly before turning to follow the path of the ten students whom had been chosen to become SeeD’s, leaving an awestruck Dias in the middle of the hallway spluttering and cursing loudly.

Well, yeah, but it's meant to be. It's separated into different chapters and so on. So it's really not bad if you read one chapter at a time.
