Well, this last Saturday has been one of the biggest days as far as my career in high school track and field goes. It was th finals of the 5-A regional meet, which I had qualified for in the 110-meter high hurdles. I ran a 14.89, which placed fourth overall. But it was very different for me when I crossed the finish line this year. After I turn in my uniform, I will
be graduating from high school, thus ending my career there in track and field.

I'd come a long way from my running the hurdles in 19 seconds or slower freshman year, and I'm ending this year with a district championship and rank of a regonal finalist under my belt. But even though there' still going to be college track, it's a weird feeling, knowing that the bus rides, trying to top the rival schools, and the group huddles are over. Half of me is still thinking about what I'll be doing on the team next year. I guess it's still sinking in.

So, does anyone else here have an odd transition feeling beween middle school->high school->college? Any suggestions for someone starting out track in college? Or am I just going a bit overboard with all this? smile

I haven't graduated high school yet but the transition from middle school into high school was hard. The work outs got harder (obviously) and the people were suddenly alot taller than me blaugh . I'm sure it'll be alright. As long as you train hard and try to have fun, you will 3nodding .

I didn't run in Jr. or Freshman year, I started running this year so I really don't know. But I can say on a topic similar, you see I am moving and it is going to be kind of weird not running for the Grizzlies(my team).

I considered running in college, but I realized they wouldnt take me since I'm gonna go to a public university and I'm slow. Plus, I don't want to work that hard. I'm already lazy enough where a 6 mile practice sucks. I don't want to run more in practices in college!

i had alot of fun in grade school track, didnt run at all in middle school but started running again in high school and high school track was harder because i got switched from sprints in grade school to long distance in high school plus i hadnt run in like several years either. and gained about 40 lbs since my last elementary meet and 60 lbs since i last ran consistantly.
when i got to college, it was an even harder transition. again, there was weight gain but also different training and in xc i had to run a longer distance than i had in high school xc. i got switched down to short distance and mid distance in college(400-1500/mile) whereas i had done mid distance to long distance in high school (800-2mile).
well since i am on scholarship that motivated me to keep training year round when i got to college so of you train year around you should be just fine. we recruited a girl this year who was really hot shot in high school 58-2:18-5:15-11:35 combination but she took the summer off and out of 11 girls on the team, she was 8th and that was only because, 1 of the other slower girls was a walk-on who joined at the last minute so she hadnt trained all summer, another was also a freshman who took the summer off too, and another one had trained all summer but had really bad asthma that kept her from not be able to run as fast as the fastest girls on the team.

I'm not planning to join any teams in college. After my senior year i'm going to say, "thats it! i'm done!!" i hate competitions; i'm not the competitive type. I however do not want to stop running. I plan to run on my own and to run in marathons. (i've never ran a complete one.) You're not weird for having fond memories of your highschool years and looking forward towards the future. Just make sure that your head is at the present and train! I don't know but isn't college sports really hard compared to high school standards?

you'll do fine.

@ marmaladish: competitin is hard. but the thing (at least for me) is that in track and xc, you can compete against yourself, or the opponent. because there is always that thought of, "i can be better than myself. i can beat my record".
