When Russell Smerdle's landlady had told him he needed to be out by the end of the month, he had been certain that she was kidding. She was his girlfriend after all. But lo and behold, it was the 31st and there was all of his stuff, crammed into boxes in front of the apartment complex. Well, s**t.

Russell plunked down on his forest green ottoman - he had never managed to get a chair that matched - and began sifting through the closest box with no lid. Maybe he could throw some of this crap out. It would certainly make everything easier to move if there was less of it.

He yanked out a folder decorated with several lines of strange script and as he lifted it to his face to read it, a small scrap of paper fell to the ground. "10809 Old Gambino Drive?" he muttered. Russell stood and glanced around, looking for a hidden camera. This had to be a joke, right? Could this be the inheritance he had been waiting for all of his life? As far as he knew, his parents hadn't died overnight, so this must have come from some mysterious rich uncle or something, like in the movies. He looked at the piles of all of his worldly possessions. Surely no one would take anything if he was gone a couple of hours.

Russell grabbed his iPod and jogged down the block to the bus stop. As he suspected, the Local got him fairly close to Old Gambino Drive in no time.

Now where's 10809? He looked around. Oh, right. Russell made his way up to the building and pushed through one of the front doors, looking around for some service.

The main room was busy as a young blonde woman with large round glasses shuffling through a mountain of paper near the lounge area. A middle-aged dark sercurity guard stood behind the counter, his eyes pointed downwards at what could be assumed to be security screens and toying with some electronic equipment in his hands.

At the center of the chaos was Prosper Reed, squatting in the center of the room with his head in his hands as he stared at plain slip of paper before him. He was in pain from the headache that the single piece of paper was causing him. Taking out his pocket watch he looked at the time and then leapt to his feet.

It was nearly time.

Giving orders to Veronica and Micah to get back to their stations, Prosper picked up the slip of paper and brought it behind the counter. Placing it in an empty folder and in a drawer, away from prying eyes. Standing up straight, he fixed his appearance and readied for the arrival of a new Owner.

Russell pulled the piece of paper out of his pocket. "Sorry to bother you," he said to anyone who was paying attention, "but I found this in my things." He left out the part about how he had only found it a couple of hours ago and the other part about how quickly he had come across town to collect his fortune, and instead crossed the room and placed the scrap on the counter, turning it around with two fingers. "Can any of you help me with... whatever this is about?" He silently hoped there were jewels involved.

Prosper nodded in greeting, "Welcome to Past Legacies Corporation and what you have in your hands is an Account Tag, sir."

Stopping after he had answered the young man's question, the English manager wondered if this new would-be Owner would be bombarding with questions of disbelief. Rarely was there a person that came in calm and collected and left in a similar manner.

"Is there anything else you would like to know before you access your Account?"
PostPosted: Fri Aug 18, 2006 7:08 pm

Ooo. Fancy.

Russell thought it might be better if he didn't express any sort of disbelief, so he schooled his expression into a decidedly non-excited one. He had already admitted that he had found this... Account Tag, and no one seemed to be hauling him off for stealing it, so he supposed he was meant to have it. Rich uncle, indeed.

As far as accessing the Account, well, all he would need was this piece of paper, right? He shook his head.

"Nope. Nothing. Let's get to it." The sooner they got his jewels out from under lock and key, the better.

The blonde woman behind the counter waved Russell over and began to explain the procedures of aquiring her key and accessing her safety deposit box. She spoke softly and at slow pace so that the man would not miss anything she said. After she finished, Veronica gave a minute for everything she had said to sink in before asking for the tag.

Prosper, in the mean time, had made his way over towards the security guard.

Russell bowed his head, trying to figure out some sort of mnemonic or trick to remembering the seemingly random set of numbers printed on the tag. He resorted to just repeating them under his breath in sort of a chant, before handing the piece of paper over to Veronica.

He nodded and took a deep breath, mentally preparing for whatever he was going to find. Within reason, that is.

Veronica gave an encouraging smile before she took the tag from the young man. Quickly, she processed the information into the computer before her and waited for the familiar humming sound of machinery to fetch the appropriate box with key. A slot by the side of the computer opened up, bringing up the key box.

The woman settled the box on the counter, opening the lid with the flourishly engraved 'Michal' so that the content of the box faced Russel.

"Here is your Key."

The English manager came to attention as the Key was brought out. He walked up to the counter, at the end, readying to give further instructions on accessing the safety deposit boxes at Past Legacies Corp.

As the lid lifted, Russell sighed out the breath he had inhaled during his unnecessary worrying. It was just a tiny axe! Strange, but nothing to be alarmed at.

"Thanks," he said, inserting careful fingers into the box and pulling out the Key. "What now?" He was addressing Veronica as much as Prosper, but his eyes were on the trio of spikey tines decorating the handle end. They looked sharp enough to draw blood, and sure enough, when he brought his finger to one of them and pushed, it sunk into the skin just enough to sting. Not smart.

Prosper smiled and waved the man over to his side. He stood in a readied stance as he prepared himself for explaining the process of accessing the safety deposit box.

"Now we will be allowing you into the room behind these doors, you could call it a treasure room or the treasury, where you will be accessing your Account. There is a mechanical arm in the far end of the room. You'll be punching in the information of Account number and code name into the system. You have only one try. If you get it wrong, the sercurity system will go off. Once the safety deposit box is retrieved, it is up to you to figure out how to use your Key." The young man paused for breath then continued, "You shall have the room for as long as you like. When you are ready to leave please knock on the door three times and it will be opened."

Stepping away from the door, Prosper held the door open.

Russell began chanting the numbers under his breath again, hoping that his little stabbing diversion hadn't caused him to forget any. He smiled nervously as he passed Prosper and waited until the door shut behind him before quickening his pace to reach the console and strange mechanical arm.

"Twenty-one. Nine-two-eight. Oh-seven." He punched them in as quickly as he dared and hit enter immediately after, without checking first to see if they were correct. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Either he was right, or... well, a security system couldn't really do anything to him. Right?

An uncomfortably long thirty seconds later, Russell almost changed his opinion. The mechanical arm clanked to life, kicking up a puff of dust that shouldn't have been there, considering how clean the rest of the room was, and disappeared into the wall. Russell was left in silence for another seemingly endless period, and was just about to get closer and examine the wall where the arm had disappeared to when it emerged again, clutching a simple, but beautifully decorated wooden box. The arm brought the box to a nearby conveyor belt and unceremoniously dropped it several inches above the surface. It clattered noisily, and Russell glanced back toward the door with a wince. He hoped that no one thought he was doing anything to their precious treasure room.

The belt whirred to life and rolled the box several feet closer to Russell. The lid was held shut by a rather ornate lock, but when he tried to fit the spikey end of his key into it, the metal bits and the keyhole didn't seem to get along. Russell lifted the box off of the belt, feeling around the back for any other openings. Nothing. Nothing except a loose nail that happened to dig into the exact spot where he had jammed the key's tines just minutes before.

"Ow!" Russell exclaimed. These stupid inanimate objects were out to get him! He flipped the box over, eyeing the b*****d of a man-eating nail that stuck out of the wood. At least it wasn't rusty. Russell, struck with a sudden destructive impulse, jammed the blade end of the tiny axe under the baseboard and pushed on the handle, forcing the bottom of the box to splinter away from the rest. Sort of a backward way to go about things, but at least now he could retrieve his legacy.

It didn't take long to uncover the treasure, despite the fact that it was nestled under several layers of red velour. The tiny broom seemed more decorative than functional, with its gnarled handle and flowing red ribbon. Also, it was only about a foot and a half long. Russell was more than a little disappointed at his rotten inheritance, but he decided to make the best of it. He took one of the vivid fabric scraps and wrapped the broom and axe inside. There wasn't much he could do about the box, so he left it and turned back to the door. Russell cradled the red bundle in the crook of his arm and crossed the room, knocking three times on the door as he had been told.

Prosper was seated in a nearby chair, waiting for the three knocks. When he heard them, he stood and gracefully re-opened the door for Russell, allowing him out of the vault the same way he had allowed him in.

A quick glance over Russell's heirloom and key, and what caught his eye was the scratches on the other man's finger. "If you wish, we have a first aid kit." He asked, deciding to be gentlemanly about it. Without any further words, Prosper lead him back to the lounge, sitting in his favourite chair and placing a manilla folder on his lap. After motioning for Russell to sit across from him, Prosper's fingertips came together, his elbows on the chair's arms.

"In any event, do you have any questions before we begin?"

Russell pressed his non-injured finger into the cut one. It was a bit painful, but nothing he couldn't wait until he was at home to deal with. "Nah, no thanks," he said, following Prosper and sitting where indicated.

Questions? Sure. Russell looked at the manilla folder on Prosper's lap and indicated his newly-acquired broom. "Is this some sort of signal for the people who are coming to give me my fortune?" If he had been the owner of a car he might have offered to tie the broom and axe to the front grill, or strap it to the back like some sort of demented radio station bumper sticker. If the need arose, he would carry it around with him, but he hoped there was an easier way to go about things. Russell stuck his bloodied finger in his mouth to clean it and waited for an answer.

Prosper looked slightly surprised at the mention of riches...really, he should have expected this answer! Pressing the side of his index finger to his lips to hide his smile, the man then turned to the manilla folder on his lap.

"Riches...Now that would depend on what you refer to as 'riches'." After all, some people considered children to be the greatest reward in the world. After a moment of silence, Prosper went on to inform Russell about the agency, and about the heirloom his family had left for him; then he proceeded to explain the accounts, records, the magical properites of each...and of course informed Russell what this broom and axe would eventually come to be...a child.

"Now, any questions?" He repeated a second time. Prosper was more than interested to see Russell's response, and the man looked as though he'd be willing to wait until his guest grasped some sort of understanding of what had been said.
